Tel Aviv Travel Guide

October 24, 2018

Article by: Tori Kempter

From the moment I arrived in Tel Aviv I knew: this is the beginning. It felt like the beginning of a great journey, an adventure. The beginning of change. Tel Aviv does that for you. It brings out your wild side, the sun lighting up every dark thought you might have, the beach washing away every last fear.

Still, many people are scared of traveling to Tel Aviv or rather Israel, as it is surrounded by war zones and likely to become one itself at any given moment. I’ve hardly ever felt as safe in a city as I do in Tel Aviv. It’s protected by the best middle defense system and there are many soldiers that you see all over the city.

To me, there are two approaches to describe the Tel Aviv vibe, the horribly cheesy abbreviation YOLO and the beautiful Hebrew word “balagan”.

If you are a person that thinks of herself to live in the moment, have Tel Aviv put you to the test — it’s all about embracing the now. How could it be different in a tiny country existing with the knowledge that every single one of its neighbors is not, let’s put it lightly, their biggest fan?

Balagan whatsoever is a word best described as „beautiful chaos“, which matches Tel Aviv like banana matches peanut butter. Public transport, for instance, gives you the following options: the train, which is basic and easy but really doesn’t take you anywhere within the city. Here the bus line network comes to play. Crosslinking the whole city – if not country – in a confusing but somehow functioning way, never on time but reliable outside of Shabbat. For Shabbat – beginning Friday afternoon and ending Saturday after sunset – sheruts are your best friend. And they too illustrate balagan in a way: you never know when they come, sometimes you don’t even know if they come, but they reliably drop you off wherever you feel like.

THINGS TO DO

Discover Jaffa’s stories and mysteries

The ancient port city is the oldest part of Tel Aviv, famous for its association with the biblical stories. Its small alleys resemble Mediterranean charm and hide many galleries and cute boutiques. Be sure to make your wish at your zodiac sign on the wishing bridge!

Hit the beach

A city that shuts down every weekend for 36 hours completely needs to have something else to offer: the Beach. No matter if you SUP, surf or sunbath (or burn) the broad coast extending along the cityscape is worth spending an afternoon or a full day!

Suk Ha’Carmel

The Shuk is an experience in itself with its many stands of fresh produce and exotic spices, middle eastern treats, jewelry, makeup - anything you can imagine, really! Here you also find the best and cheapest humus I have gotten my lips on so far. At the center of the Shuk, look for an entrance captioned with the big beautiful word humus. As for dessert, be sure to try some flavors of delicious Halva.

Do yoga

Tel Aviv is kind of a spiritual Mekka and offers many great opportunities to deepen your practice. Next to to Yoga festivals and Dynamic Osho Meditations, there’s regular events and classes all over the city. Go to Facebook to find out about the latest Sunset- or Yoga in the Park-events and check out donation based "Yoga to the People" in Abraham Hostel.

https://www.facebook.com/events/388298361610922/

https://www.facebook.com/meditationsosho/

Check out whats going on on Secret Tel Aviv

As an English speaker, your (social) life is more or less made possible by Secret Tel Aviv, keeping you up to date with all events, parties, and trends populating the city.

FOOD & DRINKS

Israeli cuisine itself is a pure treat: Hummus, Falafel, Pita, Eggplant, Veggies – my personal Mekka. But Hummus isn’t the only thing you get to enjoy here and the vegan scene especially is flourishing.

Anastasia

A one hundred percent Vegan cafe offering breakfast, brunch, and lunch. No sugar, no wheat, no animal products and fresh produce. My personal recommendations are the chickpea-omelet-sandwich and their acai-bowl. Oh, and you really shouldn’t miss out on the shakes!

54 Frishman Street, Tel Aviv-Yafo | facebook

Cafe Xoho

Another fave. Not completely vegan, Xoho offers healthy food that still invites you too indulge. Creative creations are to be awed at especially regarding pancakes (vegan options for these, too!). My former non-vegan me would have recommended their eggs with the delicious gluten-free bread. And Vegan-Tori won’t stop dreaming of their matcha smoothie topped with crumbles of the local specialty Halva.

17 J. L. Gordon Street, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Dosa Bar

This vegan, gluten-free and sugar-free Indian restaurant makes you wonder why you’d ever want to not be vegan! Crepes made of fermented rice filled with different curries and mouthwatering desserts.

Ben Yehuda St 188, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Phi

You want a drink with that? You better! The community garden of Alphabet – Phi – offers the best cocktails for any healthy foodie: when chosen the type alcohol you get to decide between fresh-pressed juices and tea to mix with it.

Ahad Ha'Am St 54, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Cafe Dizengoff

Feel like doing Happy Hour and grabbing some dinner with it? Cafe Dizengoff has you covered! The cocktail card is short but creative as it is delicious. My absolute fave is the Eggplant Sabich (another local specialty consisting of eggplant on a bed of tahini, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and an optional egg.

Dizengoff St 190, Tel Aviv-Yafo

The Prince

Artsy rooftop garden-vibes right around the corner of Shuk Ha’Carmel. This bar draws in a crowd of cool kids, mixing delicious cocktails and offering good food. The portions aren’t too big – which is good considering that my favorite ice cream shop is right around the corner.

Nahalat Binyamin St 18, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Bana

Another vegan Mecca, Bana lures you with creative and beautiful dishes, a lovely atmosphere and 1+1 on all cocktails on Sundays and Mondays.

Nahmani St 36, Tel Aviv-Yafo

HaKosem

Prepare for the best falafel in town! Don't believe me? Luckily enough you get to try a piece of its gorgeousness while waiting in line. Another extra: you're free to take as much as you like from their salad and salsa. My personal fave is the classic falafel in a gluten-free pita.

Shlomo ha-Melekh St 1, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Shila

This fancy location is booked out constantly for a reason. Make sure to get your table with famous cook Sharon Cohen in time!

Ben Yehuda St 182, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Salva Vida

Prepare for delicious creations and – a rare sight – lovely staff. My recommendation: share the starters and roll with the seafood!

HaYarkon St 88, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Arte Artesian Ice Cream

A hidden gem on Nahaliyat Binjamin, Arte offers not only a wide variety of vegan flavors (think three different types of chocolate), but also forgoes the extra sugar in the delicious fruit flavors. My favorite combination (so far): passionfruit and peach-lavender

Nahalat Binyamin St 11, Tel Aviv-Yafo

SHOPPING

Tel Aviv’s streets lure you in with many boutiques featuring handpicked pieces local and international designers in every price range. Tel Aviv artists give their jewelry a creative spin that is definitely influenced by the local and their personal culture alike. Next to the many jewelry stands at Shuk Ha’Carmel and on Jaffa’s Fleamarket here are some of my favorite shops to browse and treat myself with a little extra.

Neve Tsedek
This was the first Jewish neighborhood outside the ancient port of Jaffa. Since the early 1980s, Neve Tzedek has become one of Tel Aviv's latest fashionable and expensive districts, with a village-like atmosphere.

Take your time to wander down Dizengoff street, checking out the fun boutiques featuring many local brands. And if you’re craving one or the other international brand, it will lead you right to the Dizengoff Center Mall.

Nahalat Binjamin and Matalon Street are a paradise to get inspired: stores filled with beads and chains, feathers and flowers, tulle and fabrics. So no matter if you prepare for one of Israel’s fabulous holidays such as Purim, for an insane week at Midburn or you just like to add some extra glitter to your life – be sure to bring a friend, time and bargaining skills.

Mango Tree
My absolute favorite. The two locations of this artesian shop give you the amazing opportunity to customize everything. Love the idea, the colors not so much? Change the beads? Their designs give a hippie-vibe while staying on the elegant and fragile side, using delicate chains and beautiful pearls.

https://mangotreeshop.com

Nano (Jaffa)
This local artist engraves prayers, mantras, and wishes onto small pendants so they can only be read with a magnifying glass. The pendants are gems, carved to perfection into hearts, rounds or hamsa, the delicate carvings are gold.

https://www.nano-jewelry.com

Daniela Dor (Jaffa) is a local jewelry designer with an elegant hippie vibe and unique pieces.

https://www.facebook.com/Daniela-dor-jewelry-1022788264403705/

Stone Age is paradise for all you magical crystal lovers out there. A store filled with gorgeous gems and love. The owners and staff authentically keep the spirits high, gladly sharing their knowledge and stories.

GOING OUT

Tel Aviv’s nightlife is often compared to the raving weekends of Berlin. Take it from a Berlin-lover: Tel Aviv is way less pretentious and you won’t spend hours in lines. That said, there are definitely similarities in the music scene. It’s mostly Techno, followed by HipHop or, as the trend globally seems to be going there: Reggaeton. As for the Locations…

The Block

Supposedly inspired by Berlin’s infamous Berghain, The Block is the kind of techno club asking you not to use your phone, giving one the freedom to live the moment and let go.
http://www.block-club.com

Sputnik

One of my fave locations, a fusion of bar and club, giving you the chance to dance the night away or enjoy the bar – indoors or outdoors.
https://www.facebook.com/sputnikTLV/

Alphabet

The collective involving my beloved bar Phi gives space for techno parties under the names of Alpha and Gamma. The community garden – Phi – offers the best cocktails for any healthy foodie: when chosen the type alcohol you get to decide between fresh-pressed juices and tea to mix with it.
https://www.alphabet-club.com

Bootleg

One of the more renown clubs, Bootleg throws many parties that are great for those not too keen about the techno scene. The colorful underground club invites you with a wide variety of sets that bounce from deep house to disco, creating a modest yet vibrant atmosphere.
http://bootlegclub.com

Kuli Alma

Voted the best bar in Tel Aviv by locals, the first thing I heard about it was from my roommate: „They have Vodka Slushies!“ So no matter if you go for the hype, the drinks or the dance floors – one for DJs, one for live music – Kuli Alma is worth a visit.

https://kulialma.com

SLEEP

Despite being a city that literally never sleeps (except for maybe all Saturday on the beach, as the city more or less shuts down – including public transport – for Shabbat), you need to get your well-earned beauty-rest.

Setai
In for a super fancy treat? Setai has you covered from head to toe luxury.
22 David Raziel, Tel Aviv

Brown Beach
The contemporary boutique Hotel is your spot if you want to find a stylish yet cozy home on the beach – a soulful tribute to the iconic 1950-60’s Miami beach scene.

64 Ha'Yarkon street, Tel Aviv 6343220

Poli House Hotel
This distinctive modern design boutique hotel in Tel Aviv is the embodiment of the urban eccentricities, diversity and personalities that shape the city. The stylish gem is located right on Shuk Ha’Carmel, giving you the opportunity to feel the pumping heart of the city.

Nahalat Binyamin st. corner of 62 Allenby, Tel Aviv 6343220

Abraham Hostel
In case you’re traveling on a budget or just up for some adventures, Abraham Hostel is the place to be. The coolest hostel by far lures locals and tourists alike with its hospitality, offering everything from in-house yoga classes to tours and events all over the country.
21 Levontin Street, Tel Aviv, 6511604

London Guide

July 6, 2018

By: Molly Helfend

Let me just say upfront, that London is one of the most expensive cities I have ever traveled to, so no matter where you go, you are most likely going to burn a hole in your pocket. That being said, it remains a city that truly captured my heart, in both the literal and figurative sense. Close-by to this megacity, Glastonbury, England emanates as the heart chakra of the world, therefore it makes perfect sense that London is the epicenter of the globe. Like a heart pumping blood throughout the body, London feeds the world with history and cultural diversity. I had the the privilege of living in Canterbury, Kent from September to April while getting my master’s degree and I took the train into London every week. Although the gloomy winter weather seems to bring the country into a grumpy slump, it never really stopped me from exploring, and there is still a special magic that will draw me back again soon. London is beyond eclectic and diverse with always something to do.

There is unlimited amounts of music and art to meander through. What I loved most was that it was one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. People from all walks of life and color live and travel here! I loved the rich conversations and cultures I immersed myself in. It is a humbling feeling observing the ancient architecture, as there is just so much history, both tragic and revolutionary. You truly can feel London’s pulse of energy as you skip through the puddles of rain (which I most definitely did after seeing some of my favorite bands).

Although I was not THAT impressed with the health and wellness scene, I still have to say its one of my favorite cities purely because I had such a great time solo traversing about, discovering pockets of beauty and civility everywhere. And, it’s a city that anyone would love, as you really can find any type of person here. I had no trouble finding my niche herbal enthusiasts or music lovers, while someone more interested in business or fashion, per say, can easily find their’s as well. I will never forget my moments alone traveling on the Underground tube, with my headphones plugged in, watching the fast paced motions of ever changing diversity, living their lives to my soundtrack of life.

RESTAURANTS

essence-cuisine-london-1.jpg

Essence Cuisine

Matthew Kinney does it again. A short precise menu of all plant-based food that is meat, dairy, gluten and refined sugar free. I must admit the architecture and seating arrangements are a bit uncomfortable, but the delicious raw food more than makes up it. Make sure to snag some kale chips and granola from the takeaway out your way out!

Nama Foods

Sadly, one of the best raw food restaurants I have ever tried was recently shut down, but the owners are still teaching raw vegan classes, hosting private dining, raw vegan catering and more. They do sell items on website and have great prices for such high quality cuisine.

Cafe Van Gogh

Great, artsy atmosphere with wonderful, affordable vegan dishes. It is located in an edgy Brixton neighborhood, serving a young and hip crowd. Check out their seasonal small plates or even just pop by for a look around and a tea.

Jak’s

Great for a trendy, nice night out with a high quality mediterranean style buffet dinner. This is definitely a restaurant you would see some famous Brits, so dress to impress! Really lovely food options and very dietary restriction friendly.

Wulf & Lamb

This is the place to get the ultimate vegan burger. Honestly, it is expensive, but worth the splurge. Buy either the Wulf Burger or Spicy Veg Burger.

Farm Girl

Really well priced beverage menu. This Austrailian inspired health restaurant is right next to Portobello Road Market, so grab a drink or small snack and browse the stores. I have only tried their beverages, but I recommend getting the Hibiscus Matcha or Butterfly Matcha with hazelnut milk.

Farmacy

This is me and my godmother's favorite restaurant in Notting Hill, arguably London. Farmacy is completely plant-based and free from dairy, refined sugars, additives and chemicals. It’s so refreshing stepping out of eating traditional heavy english meals and find a restaurant that creates a balance of ease and health, without sacrificing flavor. We usually get a few plates to share, so I would recommend my favorites of the Macro Bowl and Farmacy Salad for lunch or the Bee Grateful and Protein “Omelette” for breakfast. Pretty much everything is incredible, including their raw dessert and tea menu.

Deliciously Ella

Created by the well known health blogger Ella, her restaurant serves deli style healthy food with twists on English cuisine. Very friendly staff who seem like genuinely love working for this company. I love their Maples Sweet Potatoes with Kale & Almonds, as well as, their juice selection.

The Palomar

Renowned Israeli food, specifically Jerusalem inspired meals. Perfect for a nice dinner out with friends or partners. Make a reservation - they fill up quickly!

Wild Food Cafe

If the colorful walls and climbing greenery doesn’t make you fall in love, then their seasonal fresh raw organic food will. It really is hard to find such delicate, nutritious food in England, but I definitely tried my best to sniff out the best of the best when it comes to raw plant-based meals. Their Forgotten Ecstasy smoothie and Ayurvedic Super Salad are to die for!

Zeret Kitchen

Not sure if any of our readers know, but Ethiopian food happens to be my favorite type of cuisine. All the amazing flavors and colors are spread out on a beautiful plate of injera, made of gluten free teff flour. I tried as many Ethiopian restaurants as I could from small hole in the walls to larger family-owned storefronts and I really did love the traditional atmosphere of Zeret Kitchen.

Tayyabs

London is renowned for having some of the best Indian and Punjabi food in the world. Tayyabs has some of highest quality Pakistani food and is a must go. Great prices with dietary restriction options. I recommend pretty much everything on the chef’s speciality.

El Pirata

This tapas restaurant is the perfect place to grab some drinks and small plates with friends before a night out. It won’t break the bank or make you feel like you are compromising on healthy food.

MARKETS

OldSpitalfieldsMarket.jpg
IMG_3951.JPG

Old Spitafields

Such a lovely way to spend a relaxing morning, browsing quirky shops and munching on unique food choices in this modern Victorian covered indoor market setting. There are over 70 retail stalls and street food traders, selling everything from crafts and fashion to food and wine. Open seven days a week and be sure to check out Brick Lane for more vintage shops.

Camden

Classic creative spot was made famous by Amy Winehouse. It is the super diverse and young community that make this eclectic market especially special. There are over 1,000 vibrant spots to shop, eat, drink, dance and enjoy! I had good friends who lived next to the market, so I became a regular vegan falafel fan at Magic Falafel.

Southbank Centre Food

This is perfect for a family friendly and enjoyable Sunday afternoon to explore fantastic worldly cuisines from Europe, Africa, Asia and America. Browse the market stalls and then take a stroll along the Southbank River to see historic views on London. I fell in love with the street Indian food stalls here.

Saturday Portobello Road

There is everything from vintage clothing to antique trinkets with a good mix of tourists and locals. One of the oldest markets in London, it really has an eclectic array of characters, items and prices. It feels like home to me because my godmother sells antiques here, so I got to know the atmosphere quite well early Saturday mornings, watching the sun rise, sipping tea with vendors and hearing everyone’s unique stories.

Street Feast

Great for a younger, hipper crowd looking for fun night markets and street food arenas. Dinerama is Storeditch’s street food market, which is definitely one of the coolest ones.

Go Out  (I personally like going to see live music when I go out, but if you want to find pubs, just ask locals in the various districts you are exploring)

Shacklewell Arms

The is my favorite music venue in England. I saw the Babe Rainbow here and it was such a groovy, intimate show. Its such a hip, cool environment with brick walls and colorful wacky lights hanging around. Bands cover everything from indie, new wave, post punk to psychedelia. Also, extremely reasonable pricing for tickets, food and drink.

Paper Dress Vintage

Daytime: a chic, quirky vintage store. Nighttime: a cosy atmosphere with bar and great live music.

The Spiritual Bar

Love this quaint bar nestled in Camden. I would come here after sweet Sofar Sound sessions at my friends’ flat. It has rustic welcoming energy and a bohemian vibe. My favorite experience was when we saw the most amazing jazz blues harp player that filled the bar with free-spirited jams. Come here to soak in eclectic art and find music off the beaten path.

Five Bells

Located by New Cross Gate, it used to be a proper local pub, but they changed it to a music venue. Locals are regulars, so it’s an interesting blend people every time. Bloody good time with down to earth people!

The Troubadour

Nothing but blues baby.

SHOP

neals-yard.jpg

Dee Zammit Antique Vintage & Decorative

My godmother is a world renowned antique dealer. You most definitely have to check out her shop in Essex or exquisite pieces every Saturday at Portobello Market and antique fairs across England. She easily has the best taste around.

Neal’s Yard Covent Garden

Located near the Seven Dials, Neal’s Yard is a dreamy place unlike anywhere in London, where you are transported to an urban garden atmosphere of colorful buildings and health conscious shopfronts.

Bulk Market

I love the concept of traveling with as little of a environmental footprint as possible. It’s important to support zero waste enterprises like this one that has all organic vegetables, breads, and cakes from local partners and make sure to bring travel containers and fill them with beans, rice, pasta, and spices.

The Source Bulk Foods

Another great place for sustainable travelers to bulk up whole foods, gluten free and vegan available, as well as grains, tea, chocolate, kombucha, and household items. They even have a peanut butter making machine and chocolates and protein balls.

Nunhead Gardener

Best plant shop which used to be a neglected urban space

Daylesford

Although pricey, I think quality organic food is worth it. Daylesford is one of the leading organic bio-groceries in London with well packaged local products and seasonal fresh food. They also have an all day deli that offers ready made dishes to eat on the spot or take away, as well as a cafe that you can go to for breakfast or lunch.

Planet Organic

Definitely my go-to health food store whenever I was on the go. They are completely organic and offer many health products from across the globe, including hard to find ones from the US. The have a delicious hot bar and drink menu, making delicious hazelnut milk matcha lattes and pitaya lattes for me.

MUSEUMS

barbican.jpg
IMG_4018.jpg

Barbican

An architect’s dream, you can wander the estate for hours. You are bound to find a couple of exhibitions that interest you, and one for free. It is the largest performing arts center in Europe, hosting events of dance, film, music, theatre and visual arts. It also has a cinema, 3 restaurants and a botanical conservatory.

Tate Modern

A world renowned contemporary art gallery with international works and incredible curated exhibitions. General entry is free.

Modern Art

Modern art gallery that is hidden behind Old Street, in a renovated pre-war factory.

Hayward Gallery

Great exhibition space and dynamic art gallery. It is a famous a landmark of Brutalist architecture.

Wellcome Collection

Interesting exhibits and pieces, as well as free inclusions. If you have an interest in the cultural aspects of science and medicine, they have lots of books on these subjects.

Other classic must-sees include the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Victoria and Albert and the British Museum.

OUTDOOR SPACES

IMG_3494.jpg
IMG_3643.JPG

Kew Royal Botanical Gardens

Perfect escape from the hustle and bustle off the London streets, Kew is one of my favorite and one of the largest botanical gardens in the world. It has plants literally from across the globe and I was lucky enough to work here with my graduate university. Definitely worth a visit.

Hampstead Heath

My favorite park, you can go swimming in natural ponds. It’s difficult to believe you are still in London and the ladies pond is specifically magical and wild.

Sydenham Hill Woods

Magical escape to go wild forage garlic and mushrooms.

Bonnington Square

This beautiful square has trees growing through the pavements and a quirky volunteer run vegetarian cafe that changes the chef every night. The area began in the 1980s by squatters who eventually planted all the trees in the streets, began the cafe and started a community garden.

Chelsea Physic Garden

Oldest botanical garden in England, housing 5,000 different medicinal, herbal, and edible plants. I would recommend going on a free tour and stopping for some tea at their adorable cafe.

City Guide : Santa Cruz

April 24, 2018

By: Molly Helfend

Have you ever traveled or stumbled upon a locale and just inexplicably known that this was where you were meant to be? For as long as I can remember, Santa Cruz has been that place for me. I will never forget the moment my mom and I first drove in. The foggy mist was gently caressing the pronged redwood trees, while the sun yawned and beckoned to say good morning. I instantly knew Santa Cruz was an unspoiled paradise nestled into the central California coast. It is a rare magical spot on earth, where ancient redwoods exude wisdom and pristine pronged cliff beaches manifest mediation. Where sea lions, stork birds, monarch butterflies and humpback whales migrate. Where surfers, barefoot hippies and college students meld together, prospering within a mixing pot of creative, fresh and liberal energy. Where “high” vibes are truly the typical attitudes, as you wave hello to your chilled out neighbor walking, skating, biking or boogying down the streets.

It is easy living in Santa Cruz. Most people are not living the typical “9 to 5” lifestyle. Instead, residents do not conform to the norm, finding love and passion in working to improve the local community and preserve the surrounding nature. Locality and environmental stewardship are extremely important and shine as bright as the California sun. Santa Cruz is filled with liberal outdoor enthusiasts and has a strong organic farming culture. Being a hop, skip and a jump away from at least one farmers market or local farm stand, visitors are obligingly greeted with a warm hug and genuine smile. There is true connection and relationships formed with local farmers and community members, not once, but multiple times a week! Interestingly, because of the increased cost of living, collective style living with a mélange of families and characters on shared land properties is very common, similar to 1960s communes. And to reaffirm the convolution of hippy vibes, the budding marijuana industry found a true home in Santa Cruz. It has blossomed into normality here, with almost every resident growing or investing in this mushrooming and quite honestly profitable business.

And thanks to the youthful UCSC college students, there is a groovy arts and music scene to enjoy. It's pretty easy to be swept away by the tides of the “hang loose” idiom. If you simply stroll along Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz, you will discover a charming authentic surf town that, with the conscious impacts of the older local community, has remained classic and un-commercialized. Or check out Capitola, the absolutely picturesque and quaint beach neighborhood, with colorful homes comparable to the Amalfi coast. Or even Aptos and Soquel, home to some of my favorite hikes within an infinitude of deep rooted earthy biodiversity. But, I will not lie, there is a prerogative attitude surrounding the phrase “locals only.” It is a well known secret that Lords of Dogtown ripped off Santa Cruz skate culture. But, there are also just some secrets I cannot share, which means, you may just have to visit to Santa Cruz and uncover them yourself. There is so much pride amongst residents, and truly a reason why people come and never leave. It is beyond an atmosphere of monomania, but a place where positive energy and happiness prosper. So, hop in your car, roll the windows down and take a little spin along Route 1 to discover why residents are born, raised and stay here forever.

RESTAURANTS

Café Gratitude

Café Gratitude isn't just in Los Angeles! It is actually a collection of 100% organic vegan restaurants specializing in gourmet raw and cooked cuisines across the country (I even found one on a road trip through Kansas City!). With conscious and sustainability always in mind, this restaurant gathers their organic produce from their very own farm the Be Love Farm.

103 Lincoln St, Santa Cruz, CA 95060 | 831-427-9583

Betty’s Eat Inn

This funky burger staple restaurant offers classic diner food with hip and offbeat vibes and creative menu twists. They also have surprisingly healthy options and substitutions as well. I love the Tracks in the Grass veggie burger with a lettuce bun and sweet potato fries.

1222 Pacific Ave, Santa Cruz, CA 95060 | 831-600-7056

Lulus Carpenters

This is the perfect spot for a quiet coffee or to get some work done, as you will find college students and residents alike working on their computers here. It is a quaint spot that also offers some yummy snacks and small items to go along with their beverage menu. I am not a coffee drinker myself, but I recommend a green tea bowl of soul - it is heavenly.

1545 Pacific Ave, Santa Cruz, CA 95060 | 831-439-9200

One of my personal favorites, Earthbelly promotes an inspiring message about the current state of our food systems in America. They are deeply committed to serving 100% non-GMO, organic food that is affordable. With an allergy friendly and delicious menu, almost anyone can find something they will enjoy. I recommend the Triathlete salad for lunch or the blueberry pancakes for breakfast (all gluten free)!

If you are craving something cold or sweet on a sunny day, then check out Penny. This renowned shop is the only handmade ice cream in Santa Cruz made completely in house. With seasonal flavors and local organic ingredients, the menu will always surprise your taste buds.

Voted the best breakfast in Santa Cruz, Walnut Avenue is a local winner that is almost always packed for brunch and for good reason. It sells health conscious American style menu items, located in the quintessential spot, right in the center of town.

106 Walnut Ave, Santa Cruz, CA 95060 | 831-457-2307

Pleasure Pizza

Made famous by the movie Chasing Mavericks, this classic pizza joint has been the preferred pizza locale since 1975. Super friendly staff and simply the best pizza in town, they also even offer vegan and gluten free options. Great choice after a beach or surf day, as it is located right next to Pleasure Point.

4000 Portola Dr, Santa Cruz, CA 95062 | 831-475-4002

My personal favorite spot, easily the best breakfast burritos in town. Quirky and artistic with local surf vibes, this small hole in the wall joint has fast service and a peaceful environment. If you are like me and allergic to gluten, do not fret, as they can make burritos into delicious scrambles. Also, do not forget, CASH ONLY.

860 41st Ave, Santa Cruz, CA 95062 | 831-477-0543

This is the creme de la creme of quality restaurants. Chef Katherine Stern has created a fresh, market-driven Italian menu inspired by the local community of farmers, foragers and fishermen. They also offer an outstanding wine selection. Every Tuesday night, be sure to check out neighborhood night, with live music and your choice of pasta or a pizza and a glass of wine for only $18.

538 Seabright Ave, Santa Cruz, CA 95062 | 831-457-2782

Verve Coffee Roasters

Verve, which has now spread like California wildfire to Los Angeles and even Tokyo, is a local treasure in Santa Cruz, as the first ever shop was started right on 41st Avenue. Working with farmers across the globe, their sustainable “Farm level Initiative” supports every hand that holds the coffee, from seed to cup, which positively impacts communities at the local and global level. Approachable and modern, they have a great selection of coffee, tea and allergy friendly pastry goodies to chose from.

This Brazilian cafe offers deliciously addicting and creative organic acai bowls. They also offer an array of allergy friendly menu items including acai smoothies, hot acai and yerba mate drinks, pastries, coffee and espressos. I recommend the colorful Pelé bowl with extra coconut cream and cacao nibs toppings.

291 Water St, Santa Cruz, CA 95060 | 831-458-2224

New Leaf Community Market

The local health market chain in Santa Cruz, this specific location has a fantastic salad and sandwich bar, which is a great to-go quick healthy bite option. They also offer a great superfood smoothie bar, with top notch matcha lattes. I love snacking on some fresh fruit, while browsing the menus!

1210 41st Ave, Capitola, CA 95010 | 831-479-7987

El Chipotle Restaurant

There are so many great Mexican restaurants in Santa Cruz, however, I would recommend this family style Mexican restaurant in the heart of Soquel. Vibrant and tucked away in a quaint corner, its impossible not to want to stop in. They offer such a warm and friendly atmosphere and even have a section for healthy menu options!

4724 Soquel Dr, Soquel, CA 95073 | 831-477-1048

TO DO

Get outside! - If you really want to immerse yourself in Santa Cruz, there is nothing better than simply being outdoors. Go surfing. Go for a hike. Breathe in the misty sea air. Appreciate the majestic beauty. Even taking a drive through the majestic redwoods, around the sinuous backroads of Soquel, is a great way to spend the day. Here is a great reference for some of the best hikes. (My favorite hike is local secret, so you must come uncover it yourself!)

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

This famous boardwalk is the perfect family outing. Walk around, grab classic carnival snacks, play arcade games, or hop on a amusement park ride. If you are visiting during summer, be sure to check out their summer concert series every Friday night!

Farmers Market

With handcrafted goods fresh produce and local vibes, the downtown Santa Cruz market is great place to mingle and get the scoop on whats going on. Check it out every Wednesday, with others across the county in Felton on Tuesdays, Live Oak on Sundays, and Scotts Valley and Westside on Saturdays. But, don’t worry if you miss out on one of these, there are farm stands throughout the Soquel mountains to grab all your organic produce needs.

Local Beer Tap Room/Brewery

Sip on an hoppy IPA and check out one of Santa Cruz’s various breweries. The beer culture is vibrant here, so I would definitely recommend a beer crawl, if you can handle it! Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing is a local favorite.

Berry Picking

Pick your own berries while admiring the scenic landscape. The perfect romantic, family or just weekday activity to participate in. There is nothing more satisfying then harvesting your own food with love. I recommend checking out Crystal Bay Farms.

Adventure Sports School

You haven't truly experienced Santa Cruz culture without learning to surf or paddleboard. Adventure Sports School is the premiere company, with quality instructors who know the waters like the back of their hands. Or, if you are already a pro, they rent out top condition gear.

Pleasure Point

The quintessential area to browse. With vintage shops, surf stores and delicious dining options, its easy to lose track of time meandering. Take a stunning walk along the famous beach bike path,  find a bench to settle down and people watch the local surfers catching some “gnarly” waves.

Nursery Gardens - Wander through the maze of the Bamboo Giant Nursery, breathe in the clean scent of the Roses of Yesterday or gaze at the exotic worldly plants at Sierra Azul Nursery.

Arboretum at UC Santa Cruz

Be sure to take advantage of the free admission offer the first Tuesday of every month!

SHOP

Food Bin/Herb Room

This darling small local market doubles as a apothecary, selling a very high quality and vast array of herbs.

Surf and Skate Shops - Its hard to pick just ONE shop to stop at. I would recommend browsing whichever one you stumble upon throughout the town, as all are fantastic and each owner supports one another! Although, you should pick up some eponymous Santa Cruz skate gear if you can…

Vintage and Thrift Stores - Santa Cruz thrives on vintage and thrift shopping. 41st street and Pacific Avenue will have all your shopping needs.

Santa Cruz Antique Faire and Skyview Flea Market - However, flea markets might just be the main source of clothing for the youth in Santa Cruz. Check out the Skyview Flea Market every Friday and Saturday from 7am to 6 pm and Sunday from 7am to 5:30pm and the Antique Faire on the 2nd Sunday of every month from 8am-5pm, which is where I have found some of my all time favorite clothing steals.

LOCAL BRANDS

Burn Hot Sauce

burn

Burn makes some the best darn hot sauce we have ever tried. Fermented with probiotics and organic farm to table ingredients, you can choose your heat spectrum preference to match your taste buds from mild Cayenne to hot Habanero. You can find the owners Amanda and Chase serving the most delicious food drizzled with Burn every week in the morning at the farmers market.

Creative Cultures

I stumbled upon Creative Cultures’ incredible probiotic drinks and fell in love with their Pollen Up beverage. Although only sold in select stores, Kelly Dearie’s unique formulas were designed to heal her husband’s incurable disease, and many now swear by them! Check out their Beet Kvass and Green Dream as well.

Let’s Put A Bird On It

Yes, this non-toxic candle and scent-based beauty company is named after the hilarious Portlandia sketch. With all of their ingredients being 100% cruelty free, vegan, paraben and phthalate free, as well as, harvested in sustainable manners, this company does it right. They also buy their supplies from small businesses on the west coast and were added to the list of certified Green Businesses in California.

Urb Apothecary

Urb Apothecary is a chemical-free and all organic skincare line. Their vision comes directly from the land itself. The herbs they put into their products speak for themselves by complimenting each other and influencing healthy and natural glow in the skin. This is the body care to balance your mind, body and spirit.

Living Cultures

We all need our daily dose of probiotics to keep our digestive and immune health up to speed. Living Cultures is my number one favorite brand of dairy-free coconut yogurt brand that has 60 billion probiotics per 4 oz, making it 10 times more effective than other yogurt cultures on the market! Creamy and delicious with raw honey, seasonal berries and figs.

Synergy Organic Clothing

This sustainable, family owned clothing company truly represents the ethics we love about the Santa Cruz culture. Inspired by the beautiful fabrics and textiles of South East Asia, this eco-conscious company produces clothing with as minimal environmental footprint as possible. And when you are finished with a Synergy product, you can recycle it to one of their retail locations in Santa Cruz and get a discount off a future purchase. Thankfully, their clothing happens to also be fashionable and comfortable as well!

*There are tons of little waves scattered across town, well really the entire county. If you are feeling adventurous, venture up to the hidden waves around Davenport. Just remember to tread lightly around local spots. GENERALLY, the eastside is a bit more open to outsiders, while the westside is more localized*

Berlin Guide

February 22, 2018

By: Molly Helfend

When I first arrived at graduate school in Canterbury, England, I did not have any expectations on where I wanted to travel to in Europe. However, honestly, Berlin was not top of my list. But, when my good friends from Freiburg invited me for the weekend, I just couldn’t pass it up. And, I am so glad I took that flight over to Germany. Now, we all know there are lots of Berlin travel guides out there. And it is very understandable, as it is an incredibly hip and trendy city with so much to offer. However, this is guide is unique, as it is my young funky and holistic recommendations. I had an amazing time in Berlin, and was lucky enough to be shown around by my incredible German friends and get a true local experience. Thank you to my wonderful friends Tori and Nanina for your input on this guide as well.

Berlin has more rich history and exciting opportunities than most cities I have ever traveled to. With its stunning old architecture, I did not expect to find such a contemporary hipster city, where surprisingly almost everyone spoke English. Seriously, the language barrier was just not a problem in Berlin. With some sort of festival always happening or free event to attend, it was easy to get lost and feel like time flew quickly. I was always busy and entertained (not to mention exhausted from the all night partying) and the food was so delicious and easily digestible. For you vegans out there, this was definitely one of the most vegan friendly cities I have ever been to. A great way to take advantage of what the city has to offer is by renting second hand bikes or if you want to take in as much of the German capital as possible consider a Berlin City Pass. You can buy one for a fixed price and get 2, 3 or 6 days worth of free museum entries, unlimited rides on the hop on / hop off sightseeing tour buses, as well as skip the queue privileges at the Reichstag and Pergamon museum. Berlin might be the capital of Germany, but it is also one of the art capitals of the world, with museums, street art and even historic monuments representing the deeply rooted artistic values of the culture. (If you are short on time or confused where to begin, a fun way to fit in as much culture as you can is by taking a tour with the hip Go Art!). There are multiple districts in Berlin, so this is shortened overview, so you can decide where you want to stay or visit:

Prenzlauerberg - Bohemian meets bourgeouis vibes. Beautiful buildings and modern design

Kreuzberg - Punk, cool, and edgy. The east is a bit edgier than the west, which is more gentrified

Friedrichshain - Artsy

Neukölln - Cool area with fewer visitors and tourists (also be sure to visit the fresh market, where you can get fruit and vegetables for super cheap. There are also booths with healthy shakes and food)

Mitte - This is central Berlin, so it is very touristy

Wedding - Multicultural and hipster with Portland-esque vibes

Schöneberg - A major hub of city’s gay scene - so much fun!

Overall, there is so much I can say about Berlin. Its edgy vibes and memorizing victorian cityscape will always be on my mind. But, it is also a holistic health mecca for those who want to still indulge, while being mindful. It is definitely a city you should add to your European itinerary.

FullSizeRender-2.jpg

Clubs and Bars

Grießmühle - One of my favorite clubs in Berlin that is located inside an old grain mill. Great atmosphere and music.

Kater Blau - Pretty much, there are 4-5 different bars in one space. You can go from a tavern to a dance floor in a few connected steps. Grab a drink and definitely make a meeting spot with friends because you will probably get lost.

Sisyphos - Berlin is known for its house and techno scene. Sisyphos has some of the best live electronic DJs. It has funky underground vibes and is 21+. The party definitely goes from sunset on Friday until dawn on Monday here.

Ritter Butzke - Located in an old factory, it originally began as an illegal club in 2007. Now, it hosts three dance floors and the crowd is filled with locals more than anyone else.

Reingold - For more of a classier cocktail bar vibe, this is a great Speakeasy style bar. It actually is one of my favorites, with a beautiful 1920's atmosphere and dark red lighting and lovely tones.

Clärchens Ballhaus - Although they serve food, you come here to dance, not to eat. With a mix of ages and mix of dance styles, this is a guaranteed groovy night where everyone in your party can enjoy!

Tiefgrund - Although I indulged in electronic music scene, I am really more a rock girl. If you are like me, this is the best club for live stoner, garage and psychedelic rock.

Klunkerkranich - This is more like a “cultural rooftop garden” that has a bar, DJs, live music and parties looking over the lights of the city.

Art and History

Screen Shot 2018-01-11 at 7.53.53 PM.png

Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art - KW houses exquisite contemporary art through various modes of artistic production, display and dissemination. It has a very dynamic and progressive tone, with commissioned works and exhibitions and various events. It is worth its international recognition. Annual ticket cost is 25 EUR.

Jüdische Mädchenschule - The best way I can describe how cool this museum is truly through its personal description. “This imposing prewar brick building, which housed a Jewish girls’ school until 1942, is now home to three galleries, among them Michael Fuchs, on the top floor: One of the most respected in the city, it exhibits cerebral shows from artists like Frank Stella and Nir Hod. Two floors down is the CWC Gallery, showing contemporary photography, painting, and sculpture. And between the two—somewhat unexpectedly—is The Kennedys, a museum dedicated to the former American First Family.” Great museum to get lost in, so give yourself plenty of time.

Holocaust Memorial - Truly thought provoking and moving. My heritage stems from Eastern European Jews, so I always make a point to visit Holocaust Museums in various cities, especially in Europe. A must even if you are not Jewish. A reminder of the sad past our world has endured and a push to make sure we never fall backwards again. Free public tour on weekends and low tour costs during the week.

East Side Gallery - I had so much fun walking along the gallery in rain with my friend Tori. It is a mile-long stretch of the Berlin Wall, which is one of the largest remaining portions of the former divide between East and West Germany. It is covered in street art creations and represents freedom. It is free to explore!

Street Art - Speaking of street art, I think one of the best places to explore free street art is in Kreuzberg. You can also take a tour if you want to get deeper.

Berlin Wall Memorial Site - A staple and historic must. The Berlin wall Memorial is located directly in the middle of the capital and memorializes the former divided border culture of communist East and capitalist West Berlin. Another true representation and appreciation of freedom.

Neues Musuem - If you are interested in compelling archaeological collections from Egyptian and Papyrus Collections, then definitely go here. One of the most prominent features of the exhibit is the bust of the world’s most beautiful women, Egyptian Queen Nefertiti. Cost is 12 EUR.

Accidentally Wes Anderson - Like many young artists, I am a huge fan of Wes Anderson’s distinctive artistic craft and movies. Accidentally Wes Anderson is one of the coolest blogs and instagram accounts right now, showcasing “the unique, the symmetrical, the atypical, the distinctive design and amazing architecture that inspires us all.” Travelers from around the globe submit Wes Anderson-esque inspiring places that relate to his specific color palette selections and to each thematic art piece he creates. This awesome project is shared with us all and it’s hard to not want to visit them all:

  • Ostel Hostel

  • Palast der Republik

  • Stadtbad Lichtenberg

  • Haus der kulturen der welt

  • Konzerthaus Berlin

  • S-Bahn Train

  • Charlottenburg Palace

  • Technical University

Shop

IMG_3786.JPG

Berlin is filled with second-hand shopping heaven. There are vintage and thrift stores and flea markets galore.

Do You Read Me?! - Quaint, artistic book shop.

Bikini Berlin - Home to the world’s first concept shopping mall, great food and shopping scattered around with interesting pop-up box shops.

Bergmann-Kiez - From record stores to fake-fur, the Kiez is where all the hipsters and students moved to in the last ten years.

Bergmannstraße - Perfect destination for vintage and thrift bargains.

Pick-and-Weight - The biggest and craziest second hand store I have ever seen. Ever style of clothing I have ever seen.

Restaurants

One thing I learned is that many restaurants are cash only, so make sure to have Euros on hand in Berlin!

Daluma - Run by one of Berlin’s top chefs and nutrition experts, this superfood and nutrient dense menu is based around the simple idea of pure, raw healthy ingredients. A bit more expensive, indulging on some delicious juices is worth it after a long night dancing. CASH ONLY.

The Bowl - Vegan, gluten and refined sugar free, this clean eating brunch restaurant is heavenly. I recommend starting and sharing the guacamole and flaxseed crackers and ordering the Kitchererbsen Bowl as your main dish.

Superfood & Organic Liquids - My friend Tori knew exactly where to take us right off my flight. This was my favorite breakfast restaurant in the city, which made my stomach basically glow. I had a tough time deciding on my order, but I would recommend the Matcha and Coconut Yogurt Bowl or the Vegan Gluten-free Waffles with a Matcha Latte and homemade coconut milk.

Holy Flat - An eclectic mix of various cultural flavors, this was definitely up on my list as one of my favorite lunch spots. I really loved their Holy Bowl, filled with Quinoa Tabouli, grilled vegetables, homemade hummus, chickpeas, fresh salad greens and added avocado goodness! The restaurant was small and quaint and the food was just big enough to fill you up without feeling bloated.

Boris Lauser - This is THE plant-based restaurant, comparable to Matthew Kinney. Sustainable and raw, this is an intimate upscale date night dinner spot. There are specific dinner calendar dates and seasonal menus, so make a reservation in advance if you are traveling during a Dinner Club night.

Avocai - This new paleo-friendly cafe/pilates studio is owned by the most lovely Russian woman named Anna - you cannot help but want to support her, which isn’t hard with such a delicious, yet simple menu.

Dada Falafel - Pretty much the classic snack and daily diet choice of most Berliners, I loved Dada Falafels the best out of all the food stands I ran into. Great price for those on a budget for delicious falafels and hummus platter.

Umami - Beautifully presented food and cozy wooden atmosphere. I really enjoyed the Indochinese influenced food over some of the German food I found. (Although I did love homemade German pastries at my friend’s home in Hamburg)

Hamy Cafe - My favorite dinner I had in Berlin, Hamy has a small, simple menu with some of the most delicious Vietnamese food I’ve ever had. Portions were generous, quick service and prices were extremely cheap - a budget traveler’s heaven! I fell in love with my chicken lemongrass curry and freshly grated ginger green tea.

Lodging

Airbnb - Berlin isn’t a cheap city. Airbnb is really the best way to get immersed in the city and find great deals on places to stay. With so many districts to chose from, you can truly feel like a local and find accommodation that best suits your needs.

Linnen - Hip hotel with stylish rooms and apartment options. Adorable on site cafe and artsy decor.

Ostel - A 1970s-themed hostel for those who want to budget a bit more. This upscale hostel also offers a beautiful garden and rooms.

Stick and Poke Tattoo Artists

FullSizeRender-1.jpg

Tattoo Hug - Unique small script font (super recommend her - she is wicked cool and did a great job on my finger tattoo!)

Moritz Lindur - Stunning lines

Unikat Berlin - Various international personalities and styles

Rozita Tattoo - Classic art redesigned

Alk Faen - Distinctive animated human interpretations

Julim Rosa - Interesting designs with a range of artistic background

Joshua Tree Guide

Joshua Tree Guide

January 19, 2018

As you can tell, I like my quick getaways from LA. Because California offers so many beautiful destinations just a short drive from the city, I do not feel like I need to drive more than two hours to find sanctuary. As you drive southeast from LA, you enter true desert. However, there is a powerful pull to this barren landscape. As you begin to enter the lands, they become raw and heavy. You begin to notice red rock formations and obscure shapes that are so powerful, they will provoke intense reactions. People either have the immediate heart pumping need to turn back around or a pull to continue forward with intense fascination.

If you chose to enter this vortex, you will find the commanding lands of Joshua Tree. The desert of Joshua Tree is world renowned for good reason. These lands are special simply because they are untouched and naked with real energy. It is a deep and very healing experience to bask in the vast breathtaking desert. This is why so many artists, musicians and spiritual enthusiasts flock here! Joshua Tree is the ideal place to explore personal retreats or even have psychedelic experiences. And while you are here, you will need this guide to properly nourish and satiate your body, mind and soul. Take advantage of not only the landscape, but the small town offerings of Joshua Tree. You will find profound healing, as it is a true mecca for introspection.

Joshua Tree Coffee Company

Fresh, organic and locally roasted. Three important reasons why this is some of the best coffee around Southern California. “Unlike traditional roasters, which have an atmospheric burner (open flame) under the beans, [their] burner is instead located in the cyclone (where chaff, a peanut like skin, is separated from the exhaust).” This means the beans are roasted extremely gently and evenly, and are nearly zero emission!

City Guide : Burlington, VT

December 5, 2017

By: Molly Helfend

Peace, love and Ben and Jerry’s…welcome to what we call “Bernie Country.” How can I describe the magic of my undergraduate college home in the picturesque Green Mountain State. Burlington, a progressive up and coming city, is a hub for liberal artists and “granola” outdoor enthusiasts. It has been getting quite a bit of press in the recent years, while experiencing tremendous tourism growth, thanks to a thriving college population and our ever famous and most lovable senator Bernie Sanders.

However, Burlington has always been on the map for the jam-band and snow sport communities. You will find no shortage of self proclaimed Phish and Dead-heads, as well as, hipster skiers and skateboarders. But, most importantly, you will find some of the most kind, open minded people you will ever meet. You will walk around a charming town, where people genuinely march to the beat of their own drums, with warm smiles and accepting hearts.

Burlington is a community-driven city, that is easily one of the most livable and environmentally conscious cities in the United States. The green lifestyle is built right in, as this city runs on the ethical principles of keeping both environmental and human health a priority. Any season will pack an outdoor punch with stunning foliage in autumn, phenomenal ski slopes in winter, post hibernating happiness in spring, and blooming flora and fauna in summer. Vermont also prides itself on its local farm to table food scene, with some of the finest cheese, maple syrup and beer companies. Burlington has a thriving arts and music scene, which is kept alive by the laid back youthfulness of the college community. As you walk or bike through charming Burlington, it is easy to observe the pride and realness amongst locals, who will ensure that Vermont leaves an indelible impression on your heart. So, take a page out of our book and come visit a town where the norm is to walk barefoot in the enchanted deciduous forests and feel the numinous sensation of breathing fresh air over Lake Champlain. Our motto is “keep Vermont weird,” and frankly, we like it that way.

RESTAURANTS

Dobra Tea

This is, without a doubt, my favorite spot in Burlington. In a bohemian style tea room, enjoy a large selection of some of the highest quality teas from across the globe. There is no shortage of beverage choices, as well as, a delectable and quite eclectic selection of gluten-free, vegan plates and snacks. And if you do not know much about tea, don’t worry! One of their highly knowledgable employees can recommend the quintessential libation for you. I never leave without buying a bag of loose leaf Ya Bao Wild White Tea. Check out The Dobra Collective’s multitude of tea houses across the country.

A Vermont institution, this pizza parlor sells some of the finest artisanal flatbread and hand-crafted beer in Burlington. Their core values lie solely on food integrity and sustainability, creating an open atmosphere and creatively delicious menu. They offer vegan and gluten free options, with my recommendation being the Revolution flatbread. It’s first come first serve, so grab the family and get there early.

Penny Cluse

I could easily recommend almost anything on the menu, as long as their renowned homefries are included.

City Market/Onion River Coop

City Market holds a special place in my heart. It is Burlington’s only grocery store and community-owned food cooperative. It is an essential stop to get any of your produce or local artisanal food and product needs. They also boast an impressive health and wellness department. They really shine in their fresh salad and sandwich bars, which is my personal on-the-go staple. Make sure to try their delicious Lemon Tahini Dressing (the secret ingredient is maple syrup, of course)!

Rustic and earthy, Muddy Waters is a community hub for palatable espresso, coffee, juice and even original cocktail selections. It attracts a youthful crowd that comes to enjoy the quiet atmosphere amongst friends and business professionals alike. Its the perfect snug spot to catch up on some light reading or enjoy a Maple Syrup drizzled coffee. Yes, I know it sounds strange, but Vermonters try to sweeten almost everything with maple syrup!

47 Maple St, Burlington, VT 05401  |  (802) 861-3155

Butch and Babe’s

A new innovative American style restaurant I was introduced to on my last visit to Burlington. Open for brunch and dinner daily, I would personally recommend trying their vegan gluten-free waffle of the week. Butch and Babe’s utilizes bold flavors and unique ingredients to create a heterogenous menu. Check out their weekly food theme days.

258 N Winooski Ave, Burlington, VT 05401  |  (802) 495-0716

Eco Bean and Juice

Last, but not least, this innovative restaurant is the first of its kind of Burlington. All organic, non-GMO and completely sustainable, this is the go-to place for a quick smoothie, juice or reliable healthy meal. With vivid character, Eco Bean and Juice cleverly utilizes the local Vermont Aronia Berry in many of their smoothie creations. This bitter cranberry tasting fruit blends very well to create a symphony of flavors. I would also recommend trying their vegan seaweed-flavored Caesar Salad. Paleo and vegan friendly!

Broth Bar

November 14, 2017

By: Molly Helfend

During one of our adventures to Portland, we had the delight to sit down and speak with co-owner and executive chef of Broth Bar, by Salt, Fire & Time, Tressa Yellig. Her calming presence instantly nourished our souls, just as her delicious broth and summer collagen coolers did as well! We spoke about Tressa’s creative and health insights, the healing benefits of bone broth, and how Salt, Fire & Time makes some of the highest quality bone broth in the world.

Please tell our readers what the Broth Bar is and where it began.

Broth bar is the retail leg of Salt, Fire & Time. It was Portland, Oregon’s first dedicated Bone Broth Café. My sister Katie joined the Company in April of 2015 and this was our first project together. Broth Bar opened its doors in August 2015.  The intention behind Broth Bar was to take the momentum around bone broth and use it to create an accessible user-friendly social experience that would help folks turn drinking bone broth into a routine of everyday wellness.

What makes Broth Bar unique?

Salt, Fire & Time has existed as a maker of old world artisan healing foods since 2009. We had been selling out of the kitchen for years, as well as hosting dinners, teaching classes and catering. Broth Bar by Salt, Fire & Time was a way of making all of this more mainstream that matched the public’s expectation of what an artisan food experience should be, while bringing everything under one very public roof.

Why choose Portland as Broth Bar’s home?

Portland has been a leader in innovative restaurant culture for at least a decade, but people are just beginning to understand how much innovation in food manufacturing also happens here.  As a chef, working in California, people talked about Portland as the promised land of food – year round grow season, no sales tax and very collaborative atmosphere of creators and entrepreneurs. I was sold. I moved here, sight unseen specifically to try to build a Community Supported Kitchen that I would name Salt, Fire & Time. The project evolved so many times that, at present, it is a full line of products with two retail outlets all focused around healing foods and education. The business atmosphere here in Portland is a great place to test new ideas.

What exactly is bone broth and why is it so good for us?

Bone Broth is a nutrient dense source of easy to absorb amino acids and minerals that normalizes stomach acid. The body doesn’t have to use any energy to digest it, so it can divert a lot of that energy to healing the intestinal lining and improving the way it breaks down and absorbs the nutrients in our food. I think of it as a thrifty food and healing decision, because it sets up the whole process beautifully for optimal efficiency.  It is also deeply soothing for the nervous system, great for muscle recovery and replenishing electrolytes and helps to improve joint mobility. Basically, it guarantees that the body is actually able to turn the food your eat into the medicine that it needs to function and heal.

How can we consume bone broth sustainably?

The most important things to focus on when making it or eating it are to 1) make sure the bones are coming from a source where the animals were allowed to live an authentic experience, eating and living the way that nature intended and 2) allow the process to happen at a low temperature for at least 8 hours. Don’t rush and be careful not to expose it to too much heat so that you can protect those delicate amino acids. I think the most sustainable way to do that is to develop a routine around your sourcing and cooking process. Make it part of your plan to know the farms that you are getting bones from and only make as much as you are planning to consume in a week or two. The larger the supply of bones you buy, usually the better the pricing that you will be able to negotiate. Having a freezer to store your bones in helps a lot, as well as being a place to store your finished product. It will keep for about 6 months in the freezer and is great to keep on hand for any of your cooking or nutrition needs.  It’s a good habit to get in to drinking about a 6-8oz cup per day first thing in the morning to maximize digestion . The effects will continue all day.  Otherwise, a cup in the afternoon is great for that late afternoon brain fog or many people enjoy a cup before bedtime to help quiet the mind and soothe the spirit from a day in one’s life! It’s sort of like nutritional first aid.

What is the most common question you get about consuming bone broth?

The most common question I get about bone broth is “which is the best animal to get bones from?” and interestingly the answer is whichever sounds most delicious to you. Truth be told, the nutrition panels on the broths are almost identical with nearly negligible micro variants between them. They are nutritionally the same and will have the same effect in the body. The biggest differences between them are the fat content and flavor.

Is there a vegan option?

At present we don’t have a vegan option – I fantasize about trying to build out the nutrient equivalent of bone broth in a vegetable form but it would be very comprehensive, expensive and difficult to make. Nonetheless, it is certainly on my short list for product development. I would not trust a product on the market today that claimed to be the same as bone broth.

How do you meld creativity, flavor and business together?

The easiest way for me to meld business, product development and flavor is with our company standard of high integrity in every department, also this is a lifestyle for me too. We will only grow this company without compromise to our ethics in sourcing and process. Being able to work with good farmers and good ingredients is inherently inspiring. Being close to our food and our customers is also inspiring. I get to see the consequences of my efforts directly influencing the lives of the people that we are serving on both ends of the business equation from the places we source ingredients to the people who’s lives are changed daily by the simple virtue of having access to quality food.  I honestly believe that this is the way that change is made, one delicious high integrity experience and decision at a time. I love this job and passion for it is easy to come by.

bone broth soup

What are some of the other menu items and products you chose to sell?

We also sell products from other vendors that match our commitment to quality and an intention to empower people to change their lives with high quality ingredients. At the end of the day, everything we do is in defense of quality foods – it’s the best way to effect future change at a community level and we hope that translates to a larger economy scale as well.

Every item that we choose to represent is cleanly sourced in its ingredients and is further supporting our customers to create a well-rounded healthy food experience at home. Whether it is supplements, snacks, condiments, drinks, or raw materials, I know the faces of the makers and that means a lot to this company.

Where do you see the future of the Broth Bar headed?

I see the future of Broth Bar much the way that Sally Fallon, the woman who pioneered this return to traditional foods, does – a Broth Bar in every town. Creating broader access to something so foundational is contagious and infinitely relevant to every community. We are slowly perfecting a model that others can use to make use of these products and processes in their areas.

If there was one message you would like our readers to take home from this, what would it be?

I want people to know that quality foods cannot be taken for granted and our access to food is an endangered privilege. Consumers have the most power to demand and secure access to these products in the marketplace by voting with their dollars. This not only protects producers like us, but also the farmers…and it takes so so many of them to make this work. This is one high integrity passionate response to protect the future of our food culture and the health of future generations and we need consumers to help us help them too.

jar.png
bottles.png

What inspires you?

I am inspired by beautiful ingredients and the intention to empower people to live better quality lives because of the food choices they make. Beauty is a basic need just as important as food itself. We seek it out to surround ourselves and create joy in our lives. Traditional Foods like Bone Broth are beautiful. Health is beautiful.  Humans are beautiful manifestations of this relationship to our environments. Food has the greatest ability to influence our health in any direction. It is the simplest most effective way to take charge of one’s life. There is enough suffering in the world and this is delicious medicine.

Health and Wellness are….

Health and Wellness are our birthright. Take advantage of reclaiming that fact, it is available to all of us, or at least we are trying to make it accessible to everyone so that they can. It begins with rebuilding the foundation of our bodies’  mechanism for changing food from our environment into healing nutrients and it can be especially pleasurable. This is a sensory environment. It informs our place on the planet and in community with one another. Food is foundational and bone broth even more so. It’s the definition of digestion.

City Guide : Montréal

November 7, 2017

Article by: Molly Helfend

Amidst the frigid tundra of Québec, a bohemian and historic metropolis lies on an island in the Saint Lawrence River. As you cross over the Pont Champlain Bridge, the quiet Canadian landscape is transformed into a vibrant and cultural hub for artists and business professionals alike. Montréal is ideal for those who want a European getaway without actually having to travel far and leave the comfort of North America. This effervescent atmosphere has a je ne sais quoi that makes this cosmopolitan city one of my favorite travel spots.

Montréal is an ethnically diverse city with a primarily French speaking society. However, I never seemed to have trouble finding English speakers amongst the city-dwellers. Montréal also happens to be one of the hippest cities in North America, boasting farm to table food, countless museums and galleries, and a thriving music scene, in which I got to see one of my favorite artists, Mac Demarco, play at the Metropolis Concert Hall. And for you nature buffs, Montréal hosts the second largest botanical garden in the world, with sprawling green spaces across the city as well. Although it is cold most of the year, the city comes alive during summer, with festivals, concerts and blooming viridescent nature abound. I loved the eclectic and cool Canadian way of life, while being able to navigate the city on foot and safely eating out without any digestive reactions. And as I meandered through the ancient cobblestone streets of Old Montreal and boogied my way through the eclectic nightlife scene of Mile End, I truly experienced a lively French provenance, melding old and new worlds together.

City Guide : Seattle

September 7, 2017

By: Sima Morrison

Home to fish markets, overcast weather and grunge rocker legends like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Seattle boasts an energetic culture that is far from “sleepless in Seattle.” Although I was not used to the damp temperatures, there was something natural and welcoming about arriving on a typical rainy day. Although this city is known for its booming tech industry with such internet moguls as Amazon and Microsoft, it felt more like a colorful fisherman's town. And when I say fish, I really do emphasize the deliciously high quality seafood I found. From fresh crab, lox and wild salmon, I was in heaven amongst a thriving food scene. Because of its laid back and low key energy, many people don't realize that this city is a hub of innovation and eclectic culture. It truly is a hotspot nuzzled into the Pacific Northwest clouds.

Restaurants

Matts in the Market

This typical Seattle restaurant is a simple choice. It’s a go-to amongst Pike Place natives, as it is right above the marketplace and boasts fantastic views of the city. Although it is located in a touristy area, you do not get that feeling with dining at this superb restaurant. With all local, seasonal produce and top notch seafood, this is a great rest stop while exploring the city.

94 Pike St #32, Seattle, WA 98101 | (206) 467-7909

Capital Cider

This find was the golden ticket. Capital Cider is the largest independent cider bar in the country with a 100% gluten free tap and food menu. There are over 40 ciders on tap to choose from, which are all local from Oregon and Washington.

818 E Pike St, Seattle, WA 98122 | (206) 397-3564

Cinque Terre Ristorante

Located in Downtown Seattle, this is a sophisticated Italian restaurant that presents classic tastes with a modern twist. It is a farm to table restaurant with delectable wine, seafood and wood-fired pizza options. Their octopus was particularly exquisite.

2001 Westlake Ave, Seattle, WA 98121 | (206) 456-6300

Storyville Coffee

This is a very special coffee chain that deserves promotion, as 100% of its profits go to anti-human trafficking charities. On top of being philanthropic, their innovative menu is diet friendly and delicious! Try one of their organic homemade nut milks, flourless brownies or just grab a steaming cup of classic Seattle coffee. You will be uplifted by extremely high quality service and positive energy emanating from their grateful workers.

1001 1st Ave, Seattle, WA 98104 | (206) 780-5777

Franky and Jo’s Ice Cream

And for when your sweet tooth kicks in, we found the top of line vegan ice cream parlor! Made with sprouted cashew nuts, Franky and Jo’s also utilizes unique ingredients such as activated charcoal and turmeric to create winning flavors. They also have a cane-sugar free option that is sweetened with dates!

1010 E Union St, Seattle, WA 98122 | (206) 257-1676

Plum Bistro

A cozy organic and vegan cafe that will settle your stomach with healthy comfort food options. Beautiful gluten-free handmade pizzas and seasonal carrot ginger soup.

1429 12th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122 | (206) 838-5333

Cafe Flora

A fantastic brunch spot with welcoming luminescent windows that you and your friends will love. They have a very creative vegan and vegetarian friendly menu, as well as, juice, tea and tonic options.

2901 E Madison St, Seattle, WA 98112 | (206) 325-9100

Niche Gluten Free Cafe and Bakery

Eat. Drink. Smile. This is Niche’s motto and we have to agree. Although completely gluten free, there are also plenty of dairy free and paleo options as well. The Wild Salmon Cake plate is our personal recommendation.

808 12th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122 | (206) 999-2801

Marmite

Marmite is obscure with an esoteric, meat heavy menu. On those gloomy cold days, this is a great place to pop in for a warm and nourishing bone broth.

1424 11th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122 | (206) 755-8606

Modern Steep Tea Room

For all of the non-coffee drinkers, this independently owned tea house has a relaxing vibe and sells high quality organic teas and tisanes. A great place to wind down, listen to some light music and read a book.

345 15th Ave E, Seattle, WA 98112 | (206) 323-4832

Indi Chocolate

Who couldn't love this Washington chocolate brand? You can purchase both food and drink options in their new factory location that just opened in the Pike Place Market. Don’t be thrown by their use of cane sugar, as their cacao and taste value is high quality.

1501 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101 | (425) 243-2089

Pettirosso Seattle

Pettirosso is a lovely dinner option as you gaze upon radiant Puget Sound sunsets. The menu has eloquent comfort foods for vegans and omnivores, and especially delicious Duck Confit Croquettes appetizers.

1101 E Pike St, Seattle, WA 98122 | (206) 324-2233

Chaco Canyon

This delicious, bright and healthy organic cafe has bowls, burgers, fresh smoothies, treats and everything in between. The food is outstanding and you leave feeling deeply nourished and like you got away with something sinful - it's that good. They have multiple locations throughout Seattle.

Pizza Pi

Located in the U District, this vegan pizza place is funky, gluten free, and claims to be America's first vegan pizzeria! The toppings are creative and you will get that fun pig-out feeling you expect with a pizza splurge.

5500 University Way NE Seattle, WA 98105

Flying Apron

Gluten free. Vegan. Bakery. We found heaven! Fresh made desserts, bites, breads and more that are amazingly delicious - this place figured out the art of baking without gluten and dairy with no compromise.

3510 Fremont Ave N, Seattle, WA 98103

Mighty-O Donuts

This vegan donut shop places their donuts in so many Seattle coffee shops that you probably don't need to visit their Greenlake location (even though Greenlake is a neighborhood not to be missed). Their donuts are similar in style to Whole Foods vegan donuts, but better :) Can't go wrong with the maple!

Travel Guide : Mount Shasta

August 10, 2017

By: Sima Morrison

As you climb north on Highway 5, there is a moment when an unexplainable shift occurs and earth begins to transform. The intoxicating smell, crisp air, and pronged trees all signify an approach to a true energy vortex called Mount Shasta; the root chakra of earth and known as one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. This place can only truly be described once you have visited, as it is unlike any other place on earth with its raw, unformed spiritual energy.

Unlike Sedona, it has softer more feminine vibes that invite everyone to approach personal introspection. I believe everyone should spend solo time at this hub, turning off phones and being present with the land. Come and observe the obscure clouds, which glide through the sky like angels or dotted portals; listen to air, birds, flittering butterflies and pine tree branches hit against each other; and soak deeper into your roots. This small town guide will help you on your magical journey, however, no one can tell you how to approach Mount Shasta. Approach our mother with your own intentions and spiritual guides.

Mexico City Guide

Mexico City Guide

June 16, 2017

By: Sima Morrison

Mexico City is an unexpected jewel to add to any traveler’s destination hotspots. It boasts a short non-stop 3 hour and 13 minute flight from Los Angeles, but upon arrival most would expect to enter a ring of brown and smokey clouds that rival any city's pollution. Instead, the sky brings forth limpid views of a sophisticated metropolitan hub. With this preconceived assumption of enormous smog levels, I was surprised to discover that this innovative city began an initiative 10 years ago to plentifully add more green spaces, gardens and planters scattered throughout the urban metropolis. Much more to my surprise, I found an artists sanctuary that possesses Parisian vibes with a European-esque energy, and where the Tequila and Mescal flow freely. Tastings are easy in this affordable city with the US Dollar being strong against the Mexican Peso. On top of the fine beverage selection, I can safely say I ate my way through Mexico City. With some of the freshest organic farm to table ingredients, fish and corn tortillas, I was hooked the moment the guacamole hit my lips. Interestingly, I typically do not eat grains but in Mexico City I chose to indulge in baskets of corn tortillas, and I surprisingly never felt sick. The sensation of nirvana can only be described as finding unprocessed corn and grains! Most noteworthy, I found a place that rivals most others in kindness, hospitality and elegance. The energetic atmosphere is molded by gracious people that welcome foreigners with warmth, making Mexico City a treasured and truly recommended destination.

Lodging

Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City

This luxurious hotel is steps from Chapultepec Park and the popular neighborhoods of Condesa and Polanco. Clean and accommodating, the Four Seasons prides itself on having top of the line service, restaurants, and bars. Turn off the white noise of the city and take a stroll around the garden courtyard or receive a pre-hispanic holistic massage. As an added bonus, you can receive a complimentary third night with every two consecutive paid nights.

Condesa df

Before I brag about the killer margaritas and mojitos from their trendy rooftop deck bar, I must praise this hotel for its authentic, chic atmosphere. Condesa df is a boutique hotel with contemporary and bohemian vibes that is ideal for the young hip traveler. With the rooftop overlooking a viridescent park, make sure to spend time checking out those calming views.

To See

Teotihuacan Pyramid

One of the 7 Wonders of the World, this is the major attraction most people from across the globe come to Mexico City for. The powerful energetics are almost indescribable here. Walking amongst the 3 pyramids, sun, moon and serpent, transcended me to a different dimension of consciousness. The vibrations clear space and help set intentions, which are beneficial when entering another culture’s community. Please observe with most spiritual gatherers dressed in white.

Espacio Escultórico

Circling around ancient, petrified lava beds next to the National Autonomous University of Mexico, this historic land art masterpiece is a cross between sideways pyramids and a concrete colosseum. Surrounded by stunning sculptures, this meditative site has blossomed into a sanctuary for artists. Come here to eat lunch, find oasis away from the chaotic metropolitan energy amongst this fire pit of craggy rocks and recall the early Mesoamerican site of the pyramid of Cuicuilco.

Centro Cultural Universitario, Mario de La Cueva, Coyoacán, Universitaria, 04510 Ciudad de México

Museo Frida Kahlo

This stunning museum memorializes one of the greatest artists and feminists in history, Frida Kahlo. The vivid colors and vibrant textiles make this museum burst with intense energy. Be prepared to soak in the rich authentic Mexican art and culture, as you enliven your creative juices.

Londres 247, Col. Del Carmen, Coyoacán Mexico City

Museo Estudio Diego Rivera

Frida Kahlo’s lover and prominent painter, Diego Rivera is a visionary artist who established the mural movement in Mexico. Inside this museum, you will find both social realism and modern art that is both realistic and deeply intriguing. His potent work is scattered amongst the geometric buildings with both permanent and temporary exhibits.

Av. Altavista esq. Diego Rivera, Col. San Angel Inn, Del. Álvaro Obregón, Mexico DF, CP 01060

Museo de Arte Moderno

Both a historic retrospective and modern prospective, this museum is a cultural institution in Mexico City. This is a must add to your list. Immerse yourself in truly innovative and exceptional works of art and escape the metropolis for just a few quiet hours. Be sure to time your visit, as Sunday’s are free!

Contramar

The most “New York” style restaurant in the city, Contramar is fast-paced, loud and an excellent hot spot on weekend nights. The overall vibe is sleek and polished and their phenomenal food is over the top. Order fresh market seafood or just simply ask for some of their legendary guacamole and salsa with homemade warm corn tortillas and you will be a happy camper. Best yet, the pricing is extremely reasonable for significant portions.

Zanaya

One of my absolute favorites, Chef Tonatiuh Cuevas from Oaxaca creates authentic southern Mexican dishes with artisanal produce. Their freshly baked tortilla chips and lobster tacos had us going back for not seconds, but thirds. Make sure to also order their traditionally inspired margaritas and ask their exceptional service to sweeten them with honey.

Paseo de la Reforma 500 Juárez 06600 Ciudad de México, CDMX Mexico | 52 (55) 52-30-18-06

Rosetta

In honor of International Women’s Day, we chose to dine a female-owned restaurant, finding delicate Italian inspired meals created by Chef Elena Reygadas. This gorgeous restaurant is nestled into a grand Colonia Roma townhouse, creating an elegant atmosphere with high ceilings and indoor trees. Dietary restrictors will find solace, as almost everyone can find something on their menu. Request a table in the main dining room and order their Minestrone Soup without the pasta, Beet Salad to compliment and one of their many selections of local wines.

Colima 166, Roma Nte., Ciudad de México | 52 (55) 5533 7804

Quintonil

Located in the ritzy, world famous Polanco District, this prestigious restaurant must be booked months in advance. Chefs Jorge Vallejo and Alexander Flores use their edgy young attitudes and contemporary approaches to Mexican Cuisine to create an upscale masterpiece. All the food is farm to table and seasonal and is garnished so beautifully, its hard to actually dig in. I recommend the prefixed 10 course menu as an affordable option amongst the table.

LA OTILIA Gluten Free Bakery

An angel sent down from heaven guided us to stumble upon this female-owned gluten free bakery, which became our official spot of choice during our trip. Adorable, cozy and quaint, there is a treat for the young and old. Great service intertwined with delicious gluten free, dairy free and raw options, as well as, delightful coffee, tea, and latte sections. We loved being able to make our own tonics, wile ordering raw paleo friendly pie slices.

With unanimity, we love Revel’s Jun Kombucha! Jun is healthier than Kombucha, in that it is made with green tea and raw honey, rather than black tea and cane sugar. Sedona

July 29, 2015

The call of Sedona is undeniable once you feel it, and you’ll feel it. We’d consider calling this town the only accident the universe ever made in Arizona, considering the outlying divine perfection this oasis contains. Commanding quartz filled red rocks ripple in all directions, humming with energy unlike any you’ve ever felt, while still bursting in lush green foliage you’d never imagine being in this part of the country.

Local Juicery

July 29, 2015

The heavens parted the sky when Summer and her husband Mike brought organic juice to Sedona. A much needed addition to the town, this rainbow bright market full of fresh and easy became our go-to place for finely picked whole food sustenance during our stay.  An ideal place to grab and go or sit and refresh outside on a picnic table placed within a welcoming planted garden. The menu includes cold-pressed juice, mylks n’ cold brew, smoothies and small bites, including a must order acai bowl. Pretty sure we can guarantee you’ll be stopping here multiple times during your visit so make sure and tell them HOC sent you!

What inspired you to open a juice bar?

Many things and many people. Its been in my heart for years. I have vision boards and manifesting journals loaded with juicey stuff! I was catering an event for Marianne Williamson about a year ago when she was campaigning. After the event something inside of me shifted, It was like that event was what I needed to get into high gear, just being near her inspired me! I had been stagnating a bit, not living my truth and working solely online. I felt so alive working with people again, I felt the calling to merge healthy eating and lifestyle with mind-body awareness, I told my husband that day that I didn't know what was going to happen but it was big. From that point on I had clarity and refined my plan of action.

Why Sedona?

I grew up in Sedona, I found my soulmate in Sedona, I birthed my son in Sedona. It is sacred to me. It happens to be the home to a lot of beautiful people who understand and appreciate the power of healthy food and organic juice.

How did you get into health food?

My mom and dad we're very into health food. Growing up, I was surrounded by it... Carrot juice, wheatgrass, saunas, enemas, they were total hippies and totally into it all! My mom was doing coffee enemas way before they we're trendy wink emoticon They lived off the grid on a farm where they grew their own food and built their house with no electric tools...

For a while I veered off from what I grew up surrounded by. I went to collage, I tried on a couple masks, healthy food and inward connection led me to shedding the masks and letting my true self shine through. It led me to healing both mentally and physically.

I always new I wanted to work with people and food in some capacity, but it wasn't until working for Matthew Kenney that I was able to find the confidence to really do it. Teaching at his academy forced me to meet my shyness and insecurities. I'll be forever thankful for that exerience.

What event in your life has brought about the greatest life-change? Having my son Henry. Everything changes when you help create life. He brought me to a new level of patience, responsiblity, of self-awareness and inspiration. The moment I conceived I new it, I felt fully connected to myself and god for the first time in years. Children are our best teachers.

Who inspires you?

So many people! I'm very inspired by other woman entrepreneurs, I'm inspired by people doing their best to be their best! I'm inspired by people with clarity.

What is your mission?

To help as many people as possible feel the positive effect of plant-based eating, positive thinking and full body love.

What is your dream meal?

The best gluten free crust (not the cardboard kind) pizza with truffle oil, mushrooms and arugula or a croissant from Tartine. But really, I truly love watermelon, a whole watermelon to my self, that is a hydrating super meal that nature has perfected.

What is your favorite thing on your menu?

I love our Avocado Toast, it has a spicy chipotle dressing on it that just makes everything perfect. Our "Sex in the Desert" Smoothie is epic, it make what our Golden Milk which is loaded with turmeric, my ultimate favorite superfood right now!

If you knew the world was going to end tomorrow, what would you want to do today?

Do everything my son wants to do, connect with each person with total presence, breath deeply, sleep under the stars.

What is your ultimate vision for Local?

Local is a springboard for a transformational lifestyle brand. We are in the midst of opening another location on the East Coast . We will also be launching a line of products that will be incredibly nourishing and accessible for people who are making the transition to plant-based eating. There is so much on the table right now, trying to take it slow and grow naturally but also use the inspiration that is abundant right now!

If you could give one gift to your child, what would it be? To know that there is beauty in every moment, feeling, thought, emotion. To not judge anything as bad or good, to simply feel, process and thrive. I would love this for my son, for myself, for all humans.

Elote

July 29, 2015

If you asked ten locals what the best restaurant in Sedona is, it’s more than likely ten of them would tell you Elote. Chef Jeff Smedstad has maintained a clear vision to serve the finest food inspired by his 15 years of travel through Mexico, where he cultivated the taste he would later bring to Sedona.

ChocolaTree Organic Oasis

July 29, 2015

Obviously the town watering hole, Chocolatree is the only place in Sedona to get a full vegan meal, filled with an energy you feel the minute you walk in the door. A vision developed by father, daughter, husband team (David, Jen and Kelly) over a period of 6 years, the restaurant oozes community with its impromptu tea services, day and night music events and weekly workshop offerings. The sacred garden patio will have you grateful for each moment, as time slips away into eternity where you receive a chance to admire the epitome of full bloom, complete with a hammock lined path in this oasis within an oasis. There’s even a room dedicated to chocolate, which you’ll immediately experience if you come during production time when the smell of the intoxicating cacao fills the entire restaurant. This world-renowned restaurant is a place not to be missed, so be sure to make a stop.

How would you describe ChocolaTree Organic Oasis?

A sanctuary created to nurture authenticity.

How do you create a thriving team?

Their mothers/fathers created them. We just all come together to be our authentic selves, in service to our vision. (ultimate vision below)

Who do you admire?

Ghandi, Mother Theresa, babies, Swami Sivananda, Martin Luther King, Swami Vishnudevananda, animals, my dogs.

Why?

Because of their authenticity and they spoke up about their vision and did what they could to carry it out.

If you could be invisible for one day, what would you do?

What kind of invisible are we talking? If just invisible not everything I touch as well - I would go to the largest inhumane factory farming opperations and free the animals. Let them all fly and run free. If everything I touch is also invisible or I have an invisible cloak - and if I could get in and out of any gold/silver vault (stolen in the first place) then that's where I would go. Then use those moneys to bust the factory farming operations and let the animals free.

What is one thing people can do to elevate their health?

Remember, we are only a dream of a dream. Do what you feel in your soul and the rest will take care of itself.

chocolaedit.jpg

If you could give one piece of advice to pass on to the next generation, what would it be?

Just to say, you are loved. and keep a positive perspective.

What is your ultimate vision?

I see a world of natural beauty where every child is born into their very own domain of clean air, pure waters and a garden growing in a splendid paradise. - this extends to all the animals of the world too.

Lulu’s Chocolate Love Lounge

July 29, 2015

Enter a deep red velvety everything, with a front and center case full of luscious delights and warmer than warm service, we welcome you to Lulu’s. The only lounge in Sedona, where all is served with the sweetest of intentions, it becomes clear after you taste the best raw paleo brownie of your life served alongside a high vibe tonic to match that you’ve indeed hit the jackpot. The hand-crafted chocolates are the first to greet you, stunningly beautiful to look at and unbelievably decadent, each raw bite better than the last. Behind the lounge sits an actual chocolate factory, viewable from the couch you can rest on as you enjoy the process and the finished products simultaneously. "You’re in for a treat" doesn’t even begin to explain it.

It all began with my love of chocolate and my desire to find the best. This led me to find specialty chocolate shops where I could buy bars from all over the world, always looking for something extra special. While teaching yoga in Portland, Oregon, I discovered I was sensitive to sugar and needed to give it up. For me, the tragedy of this was that it meant going without chocolate!

I travelled to Hawaii, to do a cleanse, and it was on this journey that I discov- ered my first cacao tree. Experiencing cacao in its’ raw, pure form filled me with bliss and ecstasy! I was truly blown away and my life changed. I began making my own raw chocolate creations and shared them with everyone around. When I found coconut sugar, I knew it was my mission to create a chocolate line that didn’t compromise taste for health. Chocolate that has it all.

Turns out people LOVE my creations and a business was born out of my passion for sharing what I consider the best chocolate in the world. This raw chocolate wants to be shared and I am so happy to co-create with its magical energy. I feel blessed to sell Lulu’s Chocolate to hundreds of retail markets and now to have our very own Chocolate Lounge in beautiful Sedona, Arizona.

Dreaming of a world covered in Lulu’s Chocolate...

What inspired the lounge concept?

The Chocolate Lounge came to be because A) I needed a creative outlet and B) It is so fun to interact with people as they are experiencing Lulu's Chocolate! Our wholesale business demands the kitchen to be a bit of an assembly line in the way that we make the same flavors over and over again. The Lounge allows me to experiment with new ideas and flavors as they come to mind. It gives me a venue to share them with the public without having to commit to marketing them. Marketing a flavor is very expensive and time consuming as there are packaging minimums and new item submission forms to take into account.

What is your favorite creation?

I love it deep, dark & pure. Midnight Velvet, our 88% cacao bar, is my daily breakfast each morning. Our most popular bar however is Smoked Sea Salt Almond. I love them all or they wouldn't exist!

Where do you get your inspiration for your new unique flavors?

I get cravings and then realize I have to create what I crave. I recently decided we needed to add some fruit to our product line and we are launching our Raspberry Rapture this week! I also love caramel but choose not to eat sugar. I am perfecting a Salted Caramel recipe that we will launch this Autumn!

What is your ultimate vision?

I have fallen in love with the Chocolate Lounge! I aim to open more of these around the country. Meanwhile, our wholesale business continues to expand so that people all across the country, maybe the globe, will have access to buy Lulu's Chocolate at their favorite stores. Our website also does really well and is always growing. I love seeing new fans as well as our devoted return customers purchasing online.

If you had one hour to spend in Sedona, what would you do?

I would share some tea and a Midnight Velvet bar with my husband, get on our motorcycle and go to an epic hiking spot so we can get lost together in the deep magic of Mother Nature!

What are your spirtiual practices?

I think this is something most people deal with and I am certainly not immune. I have spent most of my life reprogramming myself! Awareness of bad habits and self limiting patterns leads to being able to bust them down as they are happening. Anything one can do to practice presence will help end the power that unconscious patterns hold over us. I am a big fan of yoga, meditation, mantra, dancing & all creative activities. Choose the higher thought until you don't even have to choose! It WILL happen naturally with practice.

lulu7.jpg

Lulus's chocolate oozes sensuality...tell us more?

Sensuality. One of my best friends always says, "Lulu, you put the sexy back in healthy chocolate!" I am a big fan of not compromising. My mission is to offer a product that truly bridges the gap between healthy and gourmet. I want to help people realize that they can have it all. They can enjoy things that make them feel alive & amazing, while also enjoying the sensual experience of deliciousness! I'm afraid that alternative foods, such as raw chocolate, have somewhat gotten a bad rap in the mainstream due to there being some products out there that aren't great. I want to change that! I have gotten the most beautiful fan mail from people who say they quit eating chocolate completely due to how ingredients like milk, soy and sugar made them feel. Then they tried healthy chocolate that didn't taste like chocolate to them, so they just gave it up till they found Lulu's. They are so grateful and so am I!

Who inspires you?

I just got to meet India Aire and share chocolate with her in our Lounge after going to her live show of Songversations: I Am Light. It was very deeply inspiring to be so moved by experiencing her story on stage. Then to find out that she is also a fan of mine was the cherry on top! I LOVE Danielle LaPorte and her Desire Map work. She led me to Marie Forleo, and I am now enrolled in her online B School. Saida Desilets is the most sensually inspiring person I know and I am now taking her Jade Egg Mastery workshop.

What is one question you are asking yourself these days?

What choices can I make today to nourish & grow my "Core Desired Feelings?" This is part of the Desire Map work. My CDFs are: Inspired, Passionate, Creative, Abundant, Grateful, Playful, Sensual & Present!

Mesa Verde

May 28, 2015
