A Day In The Life : Kristin Dahl

February 8, 2018

Kristin Dahl is a Los Angeles based, Author, Nutritionist, and Women’s Wellness educator who offers a fresh take on Holistic living in a modern world. Her teachings come from an extensive background in holistic health, herbal medicine, and functional nutrition. Kristin is the founder of The Women’s Wellness Collective & the holistic lifestyle hub, Dahl House Nutrition.

Living in a city requires consistent acts of self-care and ample time away from the frenetic energy. I find that my nervous system calls for a constant reconnection to nature, grounding, and herbs + foods that support stability. Moving with the rhythm of nature and the seasons, I honor the call for more or less rest. There are times  for expanding and times for going inward. I support these shifts with different foods and self-care practices. Year round, I always keep my body moving to support blood flow, lymphatic clearance, and a balanced mind. I also spend as much time as possible in nature to reconnect with my senses and my innate ability to just simply be.

My days consist of the following rituals & routines to fully support my strength & immunity.

While some days are better than others, I try to stick to similar routines (which shift with the seasons) to enhance my wellbeing.

MORNING

The morning is always the most important part of the day for me. This is when I like to set the tone for the day. I do my best to stay off my phone for at least the first hour after rising, so my nervous system has a chance to feel into the day.

I always drink two large glasses of water in the morning (sometimes with lemon).

Recently I’ve been drinking Nettle & burdock Infusions throughout the day, but other favorites include: lemon balm, red raspberry & holy basil. Dragon herbs longevity tea is another one of my favorites & I’ve also been loving Chaga decoctions, and chaga chais this winter.

Simples Tonics is my new favorite place for quick nourishment & replenishing.

Followed by:

In the Winter: A warm magnesium & lavender bath.

Fall/Spring/Summer: A morning walk in the sun.

Some type of exercise - I love to hike & walk daily.

Food:

I generally start with tea + infusions & then typically have some eggs & greens, fresh green juice or a protein smoothie. I shoot for ½ my body weight in oz of water per day.

Superfoods:

Rosewater, Chlorophyll, Nettles, Burdock

Rituals:

Walks in the sun. Deep breathing. Mindfulness meditations & clearing space/energy in my home before the work day begins.

Daily Skincare routine:

Nucifera - The balm

Rose Water

Earth tonics - Cardamom Creme Cleanser

True botanicals - cellular repair serum & radiance oil

Isun- soothing relief balm

Tech breaks are HUGE for me - This constant flow of static energy is a bit much. I unplug as often as possible - taking days, weekends & afternoons completely disconnected. This is often a challenge with staying “in the flow,” but I’d honestly rather be rooted in myself/life vs. responding to every email, text, message & social media ping as it comes through. I think this is incredibly important for all of us to remember. We are truly not meant to be glued to devices 24/7 & the responses can wait - it’s crucial that we connect to the moments, one another,  and real life.

AFTERNOON

My days are a mix of business-related tasks, writing, and working privately with clients.

Food:

This is usually my most substantial meal of the day.  I often fill up on a big salad loaded with avocado, nuts, seeds, a mix of whatever vegetables are in my fridge + sauerkraut & sometimes brown rice or quinoa.

Rituals:

Throughout the workday, I like to take breath breaks, stretch, make tea, and take short walks to shift the energy + I often use a roller to clear tension and keep my body open. I also often burn copal, palo santo, and sage + spritz my face with rose water for a boost.

Superfoods:

Eidon Ionic Minerals

NIGHT

Most evenings, I unwind by either taking a long walk, an Epsom salt & lavender bath, reading, stretching, or having tea.

Food:

Dinner almost always consists of some type of veggie bowl with yummy sauce & lots of superfoods & sprouts mixed in. Occasionally this includes some type of animal protein, but for the most part, I lean towards vegan & vegetarian cuisine.

Rituals:

My bedtime routine always includes essential oils, ten deep breaths, and unplugging from electronics an hour or two before bed. I generally try to get off screens once the sun goes down to support deep rest.

I love reading, watching movies with my love & relaxing with gentle music before bed.

Products:

Omica Magnesium Flakes

Omica Lavender

Mountain Rose Lemon Balm

+ A repeat of my morning skincare routine

A Day In The Life : Jasmine Scalesciani-Hawken

January 22, 2018

Jasmine Scalesciani-Hawken is a true beauty that inspires so many to embrace authenticity. She’s a role model to so many women. Jasmine is the co-founder and creative director of Hairprint, a line of non-toxic botanical hair products that help you detox from your hair follicles and scalp. Jasmine recently started a new venture, noself, an inspirational spiritual journey into self-love. We are honored to get a glimpse into this gems lifestyle.

MORNING

I typically wake up at around 6:30-7am or with the light. Before opening my eyes I bring my attention to my heart and breath and notice all that I am grateful for. This is something I’ve trained myself to do so now it just happens on automatic. I either stay in bed and do a breath practice of two rounds of 30 full deep breaths followed by a hold on the last exhalation and inhalation, or get out of bed and make sure I do this breath practice at some point in my day.

I used to drink warm water and lemon first thing in the morning, but recently I’ve switched to a tea made of fresh fennel and fenugreek seeds. The seeds stimulate the spleen, act as a natural diuretic, and stimulate liver function too, so it’s a great way for me to start my morning and break the fast from the night before.

I also take metabolic enzymes and turmeric capsules. These are the only two things I take regularly as “supplements”. When I worked as a nutritionist and did dry & live blood analysis I saw so much oxidative stress and premature aging caused by inflammation. These two supplements along with the fenugreek seeds have been shown to inhibit oxidative breakdown of lipids in the liver and reduce inflammation.

I make sure to break a sweat everyday but I’m not as hardcore about working out as I used to be. When in Marin I use my Peloton bike and do a spin class for 20-30 minutes from my home which is super fun and convenient.

After spin, I will sit and meditate for 20 minutes (this is when the breath practice sometimes comes in, or when I sit and contemplate one of the questions from a recent project I created “the no self meditation” deck – noself.co).

After meditation I prepare two drinks: one is coffee with my favorite Canyon Coffee. And the other is a drink consisting of fresh grapefruit juice and Marine Phytoplankton.

Marine Phytoplankton is by far my favorite food on the planet. It supports natural detoxification and boosts the body with oxygen and chlorophyll. I instantly feel that my brain functions better on this superfood. I’m also not one to crave any food until mid-morning so this is a way to keep my blood sugar in check, as it is also rich in protein.

Before starting my workday I always write-down 3 main projects/tasks that I want to make sure I accomplish that day. This keeps my intention clear and knowing no matter what comes my way any given day, those are the three things I’ve chosen to complete.

I start my workday and since my work is creating and building a company I love, I can keep going and going and going…but I also make sure I take frequent 5-10 minute breaks all throughout my day.

stairwell-1475 (4) (2).jpg

My true “break-fast” is around 11am. I love sardines, maybe because I come from the Mediterranean and it’s in my DNA, but I can literally have them everyday. So my breakfast consists of flax crackers with butter, topped with sardines and a ton of fresh cilantro. I add the cilantro not only because of the great taste but because it is a wonderful source of Vitamin C - another great anti-aging ingredient - but also because it is a natural and easy way to protect the body of heavy metal accumulation.

Throughout my day I tend to play with the lovely natural pharmacopeia that's in a basket on my desk. Flower essences, floral and gem stone mists, rose water, essential oils that I take both internally and externally, more metabolic enzymes, and of course chocolate. Always unprocessed and low glycemic. In fact I don’t exceed 15-20 grams of sugar on any given day and haven’t done for years.

AFTERNOON

In the afternoon I might have a green juice but not always. After graduating from Gabriel Cousen’s Masters program I basically lived on green juice for years. The benefits are remarkable but I’m not as diligent as to have it everyday anymore. I’ve really become interested in experimenting with fresh herbs steeped into teas lately, wild dandelion from my garden for example.

EVENING

In the evening lately, my husband and I tend to love watching a good show or movie. Dinner is typically a big salad, vegetables, seaweed, and some form of protein (animal or vegetable). And I use some bitters in tincture form after dinner.

Right before bed, I will hop on something called a turbo-sonic. It’s like the power plate machine you see at gyms but activated by sound vibration so it’s a lot smoother and is an incredible tool to stimulate blood flow, relieve stress, activate the thyroid, stimulate the lymph system, and so much more…I feel very lucky that we have it. My next purchase is definitely an infra-red sauna because I feel this is the missing piece to my ideal physical routine.

My beauty routine is simple in terms of product use. I feel that I take care of my skin and appearance though the foods that I eat and I tend to be minimal and sporadic with the use of skincare products, but there are a few things that are part of my routine...

To remove make-up I use coconut butter that I’ve infused with some sage oil. The sage is anti-bacterial and also has a tightening effect on my pores.

I tend to alternate on what I put on my skin in the evening. Sometimes I will use Vitamin E oil (a real greasy look!), coconut or cacao butter, a Vitamin C serum, Vintner’s Daughter oil, and my can’t-live-without product May Lindstrom’s ‘The Blue Cocoon’.

I use almond oil for my body and sometimes my scalp and hair also. Of course I can’t forget to mention that I use Hairprint Fermented Bamboo duo (for my very fine hair) when I wash my hair, which is typically in the evening before bed, and not that often. No more than 2 times per week.

We have an altar in our home and sometimes we light a candle and sit there before sleep. Other times we listen to a meditation or satsang whilst in bed, or just read each other something inspiring until we fall asleep.

Bedtime is anywhere between 10 and 11 even though we keep aiming for 9:30pm.

My falling asleep ritual is to review my day and again notice and name all that I’m grateful for. So I begin my morning and evening in the ritual of awe and stillness and this is something I love.

A Day In The Life : Joel Einhorn - Founder and CEO of HANAH

December 18, 2017

When I’m at home in Venice Beach is where I am most able to get into my perfect rhythm.  I like to keep my program pretty tight when I’m at home, as I know that I’ll inevitably be traveling again soon where the rhythm’s are different.

I will also train for specific trips that I’ll be going on. My routine will be different before a surf trip, as it will be different before a snowboard or cycling trip.

I’ll be heading to the mountains on my next trip in a few days, so here’s an example of my current routine.

I like to wake up when I wake up. This is probably the biggest luxury I afford myself. Nothing beats waking up when you want to. It also enables me to get as much sleep as I need, which is at least 8 hours per night. This is almost non-negotiable for me as I don’t function well without it. I wake up and make a HANAH Coffee, the ingredients of which are below. I also drink a huge glass of water, sometimes with Dr. Natura’s Colonix powder (once in a while). HANAH ONE consists of 30 wild-crafted super herbs in a base of Ayurvedic ghee, sesame oil, and honey.  Ghee is the penetrator, sending the herbs deeper into the system, while the caffeine in coffee disperses the nutrients and makes them available to your whole body. Colonix from Dr. Natura keeps the pipes clean. I use it preventatively to maintain healthy body function. The intestines are where most nutrient uptake happens.

HANAH Super Brew

  • 12-16 ounces of organic coffee
  • 1 tablespoon HANAH ONE
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon HANAH Vechur Ghee

I will then start my morning telephone calls. Most of my calls are between 9-11.30 am. I like to keep the calls to a minimum every day as each call creates and action list. If I overwhelm myself, I’m not as productive working on the things I need to be working on. While I’m on the calls I will make a smoothie. At the moment this smoothie contains:

HANAH Cacao / Mushroom Elixir

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp Cacao
  • 1 heaping tbsp HANAH ONE
  • 1 tsp Mushroom powder (Cordyceps or Ho Shou Wu)
  • 1 tsp MACA Powder
  • 1 Banana
  • 1 cup of Berries
  • 1tsp Ashwagandha powder

I’ll also take a few tablets. At the moment we are working on new products from Bhutan, so I’m taking:

  • Bhutanese Shilajit
  • Bhutanese Turmeric
  • Bhutanese Cordyceps

I will also take a liquid mineral mix.

JoelBhutan.jpg

I ride my bike to a Yoga session or one hour workout at noon. The workout is full body mobility focused on plyometric / quick movements. After Yoga I will cruise slowly back home on the beach and chill out for a minute. The boardwalk of Venice is always fun to ride through. A few times a week I will add in a 2nd workout which is a 2 hour bike ride up to the Santa Monica Mountains. My workouts are my meditation. Being in nature is necessary.

In the afternoon I will answer emails and work on my to-do list.

For dinner we usually cook at home or order food from a great list of healthy spots, depending on how busy we are. It’s not abnormal for my Fiancee Raegan and I to work until 10 or 11pm, sometimes longer.

I will then read for a bit before bed.

Currently Reading:

  • The Tibetan Book of living and Dying
  • Surfing with Sartre
  • Leonardo da Vinci: Autobiography

If I’m traveling or jet lagged and need assistance sleeping, I will take CBD oil before bed along with 300mg of Magnesium. This does the trick.

I try and imagine my ultimate goal and why I’m going after it before I sleep. Then I travel and wake up when my eyes open.

A Day In The Life : Seane Corn

A Day In The Life : Seane Corn

November 6, 2017

I have seven non negotiables that I integrate into my life:

  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Prayer
  • Diet
  • Sleep
  • Therapy
  • Play

I include five everyday: yoga, meditation, prayer, diet and sleep. Therapy is once a week. And I struggle the most with play, however, I know how essential it is and have recently added it on because I am not the best at it. I look for sustainability in my life because of my travel schedule. I am on the road 2/3 of the year, which means I am away from my foundation, my family and the structure that can keep one grounded. So for me to remain grounded, these non negotiables keep me sustained.

Yoga and Mediation

Every morning I wake up, drink tea and watch or read the news to find out what is happening in the world. This is very important to me, as someone who is actively involved in social justice. I never turn my back on the pain and suffering that exists, but I go towards it. Then, I go into my yoga room and meditate. I let myself be present to the suffering that exists in my prayer. I dedicate every practice to that challenge or issue that I saw or read, whether it is political, environmental or even personal, so that my practice is not about me. Even though I get the psychological and physiological benefits, but it is about the collective.

Diet

Every morning I wake up and drink a special tea of Fortune Delight Antioxidant Cinnamon with nut milk and a little agave. I am a vegan and very committed to my veganism because it is in direct alignment with my yoga practice. I do not want to introduce any energy into my body that has suffered or has been abused or terrorized in any capacity. This is because I take that energy in and it will influence the way I approach my day. Meat is not sustainable. As an environmental and animal rights activist, this is essential to my health.

Sleep

Sleep is something I do not need a lot of, as I am so busy and tend to not make it the biggest priority. Before I go to sleep, I take time and reflect on my day and recognize what I am carrying into the room with me. I am mindful of making sure I shower and wash my feet after teaching, so I am not taking any energy into the bed with me. I do try to rest as much as I can, but six hours is really what my body resonates on.

Therapy

Every week, I work with someone to help support me in my belief system and in my emotional process. I believe it is very important to have a guide to process and hold space with.

Play

For some reason, play is the most difficult for me, as I tend to not pencil it in. For me, it happens spontaneously, so I just don't schedule in that kind of joy time often. That kind of stuff can sometimes feel superfluous or secondary to me, but I am aware how essential it is and I am trying to actively add it more into my life. I am especially trying to see my girl friends more. They are raunchy and completely inappropriate, and I just laugh so hard when I am with them. I am now actively trying to schedule more time with them, even just lunch or a hike, as it is something I cherish. But, being with my family is the most important play to me.

Products

As for products I use, I do not wear any makeup. I think I have youthful skin because I am a vegan and stay away from processed foods. In addition, I only use vegan and cruelty free products. Right now, I am using AnnMarie Organics on my skin and on my hair, I use Abba. I use Doterra Oils everyday. I use oils a lot because I believe in the principles of them helping me stay grounded. I struggle with vertigo and oils help me relieve the dizzy spells or stop them when they are coming on. I put some on my head and feet and that can usually pull the energy out.

WAKING UP IS MAGICAL

Every morning I wake up just before the sun rises.  I take time to get acquainted with my body as if it is completely new.  It’s as if I am waking up straight from the womb with a fresh, pure body. I am grateful for the warmth of my skin and my heart. I am grateful to be human, full of life-force.  This time of day is special for me. This is the time of the day where I personally enjoy feeling my access to the abundance of pure, untapped, creative energy inside of me and all around me.  We all have a lot of accomplishments, strengths and skills that we have developed over our lifetime.  This is where many people often feel comfortable because they are operating out of their strengths.  However, we all have a wealth of untapped potential, creativity and life-force.  This untapped potential can be felt during your most relaxed and nourished states.

I TAKE CARE OF MY BODY

A lot has happened overnight.  Metabolic processes. Digestion. Healing.  Water is needed for many cellular and biochemical processes.  I drink pure, living water that I bottle myself at Mt. Shasta, one of the most potent healing vortexes on the planet located in Northern California. As the water nourishes the cells of my body, I feel more aliveness in every cell.  I then tune into my body and my day.  I’ll take herbs, do skin brushing, oil pulling, go for a walk if needed.  I then make sure I have 2-3 nourishing and balanced meals packed for a long work day.

READY FOR WORK

I spend most of my waking hours “at work.”  I will either be at my office treating patients or doing personal work.  In either scenario, whether I have the honor of being with a patient or the honor of being with myself, I have a special way that I prepare myself to go “to work” that day.  I like to begin by getting an honest baseline of where I am in my development as a person and as a doctor. It always starts with acknowledgement of all the work that I have done up until now.  I acknowledge that I wouldn’t be in the position I am in today, with the complex problems that I face, without my personal conviction for continual internal growth.  After fully acknowledging myself, I then naturally think of the issues that arise in my daily life.  I then choose one thing that feels like my next step to take for the day that will benefit my overall life.  I develop a goal for the day, which is usually one conscious discipline that I use that day to train myself to expand my skill sets and awareness.

CONSCIOUS WORK

Right before I step into my office, I remind myself of every unique job that I have given myself. First and foremost, I am responsible for my own energy and life.  I take care of Christine first and she is always being taken care of throughout the day.  I take full responsibility for my body, thoughts, feelings and actions.  I then expect others to take full responsibility for their body, thoughts, feelings and actions.  This is how to have an empowered team.  It is common for a lot of people to slip up from time to time and expect others to take responsibility for their feelings or actions, but this is something that I discipline myself to not go into agreement with because it leads to both parties being in a position of disempowerment, draining of vital life energy and ultimately resentment.  This never has a good outcome.  Then I acknowledge my other jobs and their responsibilities— Naturopathic Doctor, Business Owner, Office Manager, Accountant, Colleague, Research Scientist, Innovation Team and work diligently to perform them well.

THE END OF THE DAY

At the end of the day, I do my best to tie up loose ends and clean up from the day.  The last thing I want to do is go to bed with looming unfinished tasks.  I acknowledge myself for working hard, learning and being fully committed to my life. I take a few moments where I feel my appreciation for being exactly where I am, just as I am.  Goodnight!

A Day In The Life : Nitsa Citrine

September 25, 2017

Morning

Food: First, a giant glass of spring water.  Most mornings this is followed by a warm potion infused with tonic herbs, some white dragon matcha or chai, and a little raw honey blended up with some homemade sprouted nut or seed milk. ( I like to make my own nut milks because I try to avoid anything containing any form of preservatives, and prefer the creamy freshness of homemade versus store bought raw milks!) As a snack,  I love a giant spoonful of coconut yogurt from coconut cult - sprinkled with a little bee pollen and pine pollen - probiotic mineral rich, immune boosting gut-flora humming perfection!

Mindful exercises or rituals: First thing upon waking I take a moment to articulate my gratitude for all the blessings in my life. Love when I have time for morning yoga. My latest excitement is the 9am Kundalini class with Tej at Nine Treasures Yoga.  My friend Ise recently brought me to her class and I love it!

Other days may include the ritual of heading up to my roof for some self-guided pranayama, some simple stretches, jumping on my rebounder or just watering my plants....Almost everyday I take a few minutes to consciously enjoy a few rounds of tea, as a sort of meditation. I love these moments.

Products: Our White Dragon Matcha (from Sun Potion) and Yin Power.
Golda atmosphere mist - my friends Keiko and Tsugu offer this amazing woodsy spray made from Japanese Hiba wood which I mist myself (and anyone who happens to be around me) with all day long!
Poppy and Someday Marfa Moon Mist (for face)
Shiva Rose Beauty Balm
And then,  always love a good puerh - currently sipping Greg’s Galactivation Serum from Living Tea - which is amazing!

Routines: WORK. I feel grateful to work for myself and have the freedom of creating my work schedule. This being said, I tend to work constantly....I love it. Whether it is shooting photos, taking meetings, designing, strategizing, alchemizing….I like to stay busy, grounded and focused.
Unless I am out shooting, taking meetings or traveling, I tend to work best (from my home office) between 9 and 4pm….So you will often find me here during the day.

Afternoon

Food: Green juice, a chlorophyll rich salad, more tonics... love to snack on raw chocolate and fermented nut and seed cheeses, seasonal fruits, veggies!

Body work or workouts: Since my brain is most turned on in first part of the day, I tend to hit the gym or go for a hike around 4pm… I have my personal idiosyncrasy of a fitness routine that I follow...it used to be kind of a joke (I called it my 5 min workout) though I have been getting back into fitness and creating more time for it recently. Love how a range of exercise really enhances my overall energy levels, mood and mental clarity!
I love to warm up before yoga or a workout in my infrared sauna.

Night

Food: If I am cooking at home, I try to have an early dinner...this  generally consists of tons of vegetables (roasted or steamed or sautéed), some protein (some wild fish or if I am in a plant based zone - which happens often - more vegetables, sprouted grains, lentils, soups, kichari etc. I also love to cook for / with other people. Truth be told, I also love to go out and enjoy beautiful food with friends…organic, local, seasonal whole foods prepared with love, artistry  and intelligence...yum!

Mindful exercises or rituals: Gratitude. Pleasure. Joy.

Body work or workouts: Hmm… sleep prep?? Dancing! I have this funny muscle massage called “The Thumper” which is great for softening muscles + easing tension

Products: Poppy and Someday oil pulling, Sun Potion Shea Butter, Omica Sea Buckthorn Oil, Triphala, Tulsi Rose Tea, Evan Healy Immortelle Face Hydrosol

Routines: Love to run my aromatherapy diffuser (with lavender, rose, eucalyptus, peppermint and hiba oils) before falling into dreams...clears the respiratory system and energy from the day!

A Day In The Life : Recipe Healer Bethany "lilsipper"

MORNING

My mornings usually consist of early gym workouts (really early! - like 4:30 / 5:00am) for about an hour. A mix of low impact cardio such as the stair-master or hill climbing on the treadmill and weight training. I love weights! In fact, weight training is a cardio workout in and of itself and it's sculpted my body like no other...not to mention it's revved up my metabolism to the max. However, not all mornings start with a workout and if I wake up and feel my body needs to rest, I rest. I don't ever plan on "rest days" but usually take them 2-3 times a week. Something many people fail to realize is that our bodies are broken down in the gym and build when we are in recovery mode (AKA: resting).

I normally don't eat anything before a workout since it makes my stomach cramp, but I do however consume a tsp of bee pollen - full of B vitamins for energy - and a spoon of raw coconut butter (also filled with healthy fats and immediate energy). I also prepare a large bottle filled with approximately 2 Tbsp of Fire Cider and the rest with room temperature water. I take that with me and have it waiting for me for when I finish my workout.

Coming home from the gym I take my dog Lucy out for a walk while I catch up on my emails, Instagram comments and DMs, etc. I know I should be enjoying the outdoors but there's just not enough time in the day to get everything done and keep up with what I have on my plate...one day I want to break that habit (hey, I'm not perfect!).

Once home, I eat some pureed meat (great for digestion and wonderful after a workout) and make some ghee and gelatin frothy coffee (a staple in my house) or matcha latte. Then again, trying to catch up on comments/DMs, emails all while meal prepping for the days ahead which varies depending on what I am "low on". My 1-ingredient coconut milk is usually on repeat as I try and make everything from scratch. There's nothing better than knowing what goes in your food and most importantly, what doesn't!

Mid morning I usually grab a snack like cultured cottage cheese and fruit, oatmeal (yes, that's a snack!), or a nutrition bar like the ones from Evo Hemp which I always have on hand - they're clean, pure, contain no junk whatsoever, and help with inflammation. If I am recipe testing that day, I usually "skip" my snack and just eat what I'm testing out.

AFTERNOON

Come the afternoon, I'm lucky if I have already showered! Thankfully I work from home so if I'm in my jams all day it's not an issue...running errands with knotted hair and PJs is becoming more popular and I like to think I had a part of that *wink. I try and tidy up the house and do the small, every day things that need to be done.

Smoothies are a staple in my days and I usually don't go a day without one! Sweet potato and cauliflower smoothies (yes, you heard me) have become an all time favorite and my Instagram followers have shown me their version so I know I'm not the only one who thinks these weird smoothies are flippin' bomb!

Afternoons also include another quick walk with Lucy, just to get out, move, and break up the day....then back to work.

EVENING

For dinner it can be anything from leftovers of what I created earlier that day, to a simple pasta, chicken, or my favorite air fried fries with my veggie avocado dip (so good!). And of course...tea! The Food Network is usually my "go-to" and sometimes just on in the background while I catch up on emails, social media, and go over the photos I photographed that day (I use a professional Nikon to take my pictures) while editing.

What products are my favorite? I have only a handful since I am VERY picky about what I put into my own body as well as recommend to others. There's so much crap put into "health foods" these days, that only a few items I have come across fit the bill. I have an entire page on my blog dedicated to all the top food products and kitchen gadgets I use and consume almost daily.

I'm always working, 7 days a week, 12-13 hours every day....but I love it! Yes, I get exhausted every day, but I feel so blessed to be able to share with others and help those in need with the information I put out and pass on. It gives me joy knowing that people are benefiting....from me! I would have never guessed that this would be my calling.

What I do upon waking

The temptation is always there to get out of bed just to grab my phone and then get back in bed. I purposely leave my phone far away from my bed because the day goes fast and it goes even faster if I start looking at the world right away. Instead, I breathe my way into my body for a few minutes. The world can wait.

Daily Food - Morning

Breakfast is my most important meal of the day. I take the time to fuel my body with TONS of nutrients to kick start my day. My routine goes in order like this: 32 ounces of water with aloe vera, supplements, Coconut Cult probiotic yogurt, Celery Juice, Detox Smoothie, and once in a while I’ll make a high quality Jade Oolong tea for my drive to my office. Throughout the day, I drink TONS of fluids. Currently, I’m on a kick with lemon balm and thyme tea and fresh watermelon juice. Lunch and dinner usually consist of a big salad with tons of vegetables and seaweed and either an avocado or a piece of fish.

Current Favorite Supplements

I’m really into the protocols of Anthony William, the Medical Medium and so most of the supplements I take are a result of what I’ve learned about my body through his understandings. I take a lot of things throughout the day but my top favorites are: Chaga, Magnesium Glycinate, Liposomal Vitamin C, Milk Thistle, NAC, Colloidal Silver, and The Tincture by 2Rise Naturals. My complete routine is slightly ridiculous because I am totally passionate about understanding how my body wants to optimize.

What I’m Reading

Enlightenment: The Only Revolution by Osho

The Direct Means to Eternal Bliss by Michael Langford

Self-Care Rituals

Meditation - I do both seated meditation and movement meditations.

Gym - I’m really into working out at high intensity intervals with weights and doing calisthenics because this kind of movement flushes the energetic channels and immediately grounds me and makes me feel excited to be alive.

Infrared Sauna - I LOVE the infrared sauna for flushing the lymphatic system and deeply nourishing the body. I like to put oregano oil on my clavicle area prior to entering. Oregano oil helps to flush the lymph.

Tea Time - I adore taking a pause from life at my low-to-the-ground tea table with tiny clay cups and tiny clay teapots handmade in the Yunnan Provence of China. Tea ceremony is dear to my heart and I do it several times a week. I feel time slow wayyyy down when I’m engaged in the process of making the perfect cup of tea. I order most of my teas from The Phoenix Collection and Yunnan Sourcing.

Current Favorites

Radha Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser - I have one in my bedroom and at my office. I diffuse German chamomile, mugwort, and lavender about an hour before I go to sleep at night. I diffuse citrus oils with rosemary for mental focus and a mix of eucalyptus, rosemary, cinnamon, clove and lemon to kill any bacteria in the air.

The Tincture from 2Rise Naturals truly quiets any noise in my mind and helps me to see more of the beauty in this world…it’s just the best!

Celery Juice - I make it every morning. 16oz of pure celery juice will heal your adrenals and nourish your kidneys like whoa. Plus, it just makes me feel amazing.

Swanwick Blue Light Blocking Glasses - I take these babies everywhere I go. I don’t care how I look in them either. Wearing blue light blockers has changed my life. I wear them anytime I am in a place with fluorescent or bright lights and I especially wear them at night and while traveling via airports. They prevent blue light from entering your eyes which causes your hormones to do funny things to you, like stay awake when you want to go to sleep. I could get scientific here but I’d rather just tell you to look it up because it’s a game changer.

A Day In The Life : Elle Macpherson

July 31, 2017

MORNING

I love my morning routine, it sets me up for the day and it’s non-negotiable, I know it makes me feel great, so I stick to it. I wake at around 5.30am, I set my intentions for the day, I try to be kind to myself and check in, to understand how I am feeling in my body and my mind. I try to take about 30 minutes every morning to meditate. It helps keep me balanced and feel strong and confident. I always sip on hot water and lemon before I eat breakfast to kick start my metabolism.

Food: In winter, I like to have something warm in my stomach like oatmeal with homemade almond milk and blueberries or eggs. But as it warms up I love smoothies or smoothie bowls, like this amazing recipe by Allison Wu:

Hidden Zucchini Nourishing Protein Smoothie Bowl

  • 1/2 frozen zucchini
  • 1/2 cup strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons raw cacao nibs
  • 2 tablespoons raw almond butter
  • 1 cup hemp milk (or any non-dairy milk)
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 4 ice cubes
  • 1 scoop of THE SUPER ELIXIR Chocolate Nourishing Protein

Combine all ingredients and blitz.

Body work or workouts: I often do my daily workout after the school run. At the moment, I am working on being kind to myself and really asking, what is it my body needs today? I might have a lot of energy and feel like working hard – so I might choose a boxing circuit, bootcamp style class or a long soft sand run. On other days, I might feel like something less intensive like yoga or pilates or a walk. And there are days when I don’t feel like working out at all, but I like to do some kind of body work so I might dedicate my workout time to a massage, acupuncture, reiki or even a manicure. My body menu list is long!

Products: I always start my wellness-beauty routine with two teaspoons of THE SUPER ELIXIR Alkalising Formula every morning in cold spring water. Since taking our Alkalising Formula I noticed my skin became dewy, looked plumper and had a glow. My sugar cravings subsided as my blood sugar levels became more balanced. My digestion improved. I felt more up beat and emotionally balanced. The supplement helps to keep me feeling like my body is getting the nutrients it needs to take on the day effectively. I don’t have to take anything else as it is complete with vitamins, minerals, pre and probiotics. I know if I nourish my cells from the inside it will show on the outside.

Elle Macpherson Super Elixir

AFTERNOON

What I try to do everyday is live a balanced lifestyle, eat a healthy amount of nutritious foods, and stay active whenever I can. At 53, I am happier than I ever have been - and I have a sense of fulfillment.

Food: I love kale, spinach, sprouts and rocket. I will generally always have greens with whatever I eat at lunch – often a vegetarian salad with a base of pulses, lentils or quinoa, loaded up with leafy greens and other vegetables from the colour of the rainbow. As a snack I’ll often have The SUPER ELIXIR Nourishing Protein with homemade almond milk as a shake on the go. Being plant based, this protein is easily absorbed by my body, helps me feel fuller for longer and boosts my metabolism. I carry the travel sachets around in my bag for that very reason.

Body work or workouts: I used to think I had to reach a certain intensity at each workout but I have come to realise my body isn’t a machine, what feels good on one day, might not feel as great the next. I have always liked variety; right now it includes spin classes, boxing, swimming, running, hiking, surfing or a just walk outdoors wherever I happen to be in the world.

NIGHT

A new priority of mine is to get my 7 hours of sleep a night - it restores the body, allows antioxidants to counteract free radicals and means I am at my optimum every day.

Food: At dinner, I will try and include greens. My evening meal often consists of fresh line caught fish with salad or vegetables. I try and avoid carbs after 5pm. We try and eat as a family at night as much as we can. When we do we have a no screens policy. As a treat, we’ll make homemade pizzas, we love Mexican food and anything using the fresh produce we have in the house that week.

Mindful exercises or rituals: At the end of everyday I make sure I do a gratitude list (even if it’s just in my head).

Routines: With two international businesses (WelleCo and Elle Macpherson Body) operating on different time zones I had a period where I couldn’t switch off, my mind was racing and I had difficulty drifting off to sleep. It’s part of the reason we developed the Sleep Welle Calming Tea, it contains Valerian, Hops and Skullcap which are known to naturally induce sleep and ease anxiety. I also have a bedtime routine that I try and stick to, it can be hard sometimes though, especially when I am traveling. I try and have no screens an hour before bed, I’ll have a hot shower, or sometimes a bath before bed, then I will brew our Sleep Welle Tea and sip it right up until I hop into bed. I’ll do this yoga pose where you lie with your legs up a wall and your arm outstretched, it’s a great way to calm down and zone out before bed. I’ll often do some reading; I am a fan of biographies and autobiographies, some of my favourites lately have been: Prince – Purple Rain, Mick Wall and What I Know for Sure, and Oprah Winfrey. For those nights when I just can’t switch off I have a notepad and pen on my nightstand, I finding jotting down ideas stops them swirling around my head and I can more easily fall asleep.

A Day In The Life: Summer Sanders, Local Juicery

July 24, 2017

MORNING

In the morning, if it’s a week day, I usually try to wake up at least 30 minutes before my 3 1/2 year old. We co-sleep so sometimes he just wakes with me. If I get that time, I’ll spend it doing some deep breathing, meditation or a quick workout. Henry (my son) and I always start the day by watering our garden…then we play whatever animal game Henry is into, I kiss him like crazy, make him a tonic, pack his little lunch, drive him to his little Waldorf kindergarten and kiss him again.

Then I get to work which is where the routine kind of comes into play. But since I own my own business it’s kind of crazy. Sometimes I’m working at my shop, sometimes I’m driving to our construction site where we’re opening our second location, sometimes I’m working from a coffee shop or from home…it gets nuts, but I really like it.  I have to pack everything in between 9:00am and 3:00pm when I pick my son up, so I have to be very organized and deliberate with what I do, sometimes this happens, sometimes it doesn’t.

I also have a health coaching business and blog that I do on the side so I’m always trying to find time to fit that in. It’s part work but mainly passion.

Yoga classes are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. I love these days. I try to make it every week. I go to Aumbase and Seven Centers in Sedona.

Food

I’m not a breakfast person, I’ve tried it, it just doesn’t work for me. Usually I’ll have a cup of dandelion root or celery juice about 30 minutes after waking. I then do my standard tonic, I drink the same thing pretty much everyday and I’m not going to be changing it anytime soon. It’s a cold tonic that has stone ground almond butter, chaga, reishi, cordyceps, ashwagandha, mucuna purians, he shou wu, raw cacao, sometimes some collagen sometimes not and some stevia. I’ll drink this usually around 8:00am and it holds me until 11 or so, sometimes I’ll double fist with a cold-pressed green juice from Local.

Mindful exercises / rituals

I do yoga 3 days a week, Ashtanga and Hatha. I also go on frequent walks and do 3 circuit workouts a week which I’m always sharing on instagram. I try to practice walking meditation sometimes, but my personality isn’t really the slow type. It's a struggle for me.

Weekly I go see my dear friend Alice who does Alphabiotics here in Sedona, she’s an angel. This really helps me with lower back pain from standing so much and from old sports injuries. It also balances out my brain, which I think we all need. This is my favorite kind of body work.

I go see a colon hydrotherapist at least once a month, this is just a good way to care for the colon and the gut. I see Kate at Digestive Wellness Center in Sedona, she is amazing!

Besides that, it's at home care with magnesium baths, breath work when I can settle in and meditations when I can make the time.

Products

  • Living Libations best skin ever gives me a radiant glow, I always get the most complements on my skin when I use it.
  • Dr. Hushka Rose Cream, the OG skin care line. My mom used this when I was a kid and I now use it with Henry. It smells so good and in the desert you need this kind of thick hydration.
  • RMS “Un” coverup in 22, the best makeup ever.
  • Burt's Bees lip balm for lips and cheeks, they have the best natural tints.
  • Dry shampoo because who has time to wash their hair?

AFTERNOON

In the afternoon, I’m usually about spend with using my brain, so it's Henry play time. We go to the park, spend time at home reading or playing or go to the pool.
I try to start thinking about dinner around 2:00pm just in case we need to go to the market. I wish I was someone who planned meals ahead of time, but I don’t. I just go with whatever hits me.

Food

Usually I have a huge 32 oz smoothie which consists of a Kickstart (grapefruit, orange, coconut water, cayenne) from my shop, blended with a whole bunch (meaning an entire bundle) of cilantro, 1 whole grapefruit, handful of spinach and 2 dates. I blend this up and I’m energized to the max. If I feel like I need something more, I’ll eat a couple tablespoons of Coconut Cult yogurt and then I’m dandy.

Mindful exercises / rituals

Breaths! Sit out in at least 10 minutes of sunshine. Jump on the trampoline with Henry.

NIGHT

We eat dinner early because Henry goes to bed at 6:00. So lots of prep from 4:00 to 5:00, He helps me cook or prepare our foods which is so fun for both of us!

After Henry is in bed, I usually read, catch up on emails or just spend time with my husband. Mike (my husband) and I are business partners so it’s hard not to talk work all the time, but we do our best to just unwind. Sometime that involves Netflix binges or walk around the neighborhood, we live next to a great Japanese restaurant so sometimes we walk to dinner. My mom lives with us, so we have amazing support with childcare. This makes being small business owners and parents a little less stressful.

Food

Dinner is always different, for the summer we go mainly raw. Mike is a meat eater so he’ll supplement, but I keep it raw vegan during the summertime and Henry usually leans vegan.

For me it's raw soups, big salads, sometimes fruit or a whole watermelon…just simple foods that taste amazing. I make a lot of recipes from my upcoming book Raw and Radiant, I love just eating really light and pure. I notice I feel and look my best when I’m plant based and raw.

Mindful exercises / rituals

4 things that are ritual like: blue-blockers if I’m on the phone or computer; skin brushing; I always stretch at night' we play Native American flute music; I do deep breathing while lying in bed to put myself to sleep. These pretty much never change.

Products

  • At night its MyChelle Retinal
  • Neem toothpaste
  • Magnesium body spray
  • Iodine supplement
  • Cell food supplement
  • Nucifura all over the body

A Day In The Life: Elissa Goodman, Nutritionist

July 4, 2017

Food - what do you typically eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks?

I typically start my day with liquids such as a green juice or homemade matcha latte. Both are super nutrient dense but don’t weigh me down. I sometimes add superfood powders: Hawaiian Nutrex, Spirulina Powder, or Barley Grass Juice Extract to my green juice. In my homemade matcha latte, I add a tablespoon of Nutiva MCT oil for healthy fat, So Delicious Culinary Coconut Milk, and Omica 100% stevia.

Lunch and dinner are always changing. It’s generally something plant-based with the occasional high quality animal protein, my lunch go-to’s are M Café (M Chopped or Lazy Sushi Bowl) & Real Food Daily (Tempeh Reuben Collard Wrap) here in Los Angeles. I’m about 80% vegan and I tend not to snack much but when I do need a little extra something, my go to snack is one of my super-seed bars.  I keep organic peanut or almond butter, blueberries, apples, sprouted pumpkin seeds, and cashews on hand at my office if I need more substance. I always have bone broth stocked in the freezer to satiate me between clients.

We eat dinner in my house as a family. I like to set a nice table, light candles, and eat together. This is when we get to connect and catch up on our day. It’s important to me that we don’t sit in front of television or on our phones as we eat. I always start with a salad, even if simple and try to make the vegetable portions outweigh the animal or vegan protein and gluten free grain options.

Mindful exercises or rituals - what do you do daily?

I don’t get too strict with myself! I find that when I’m too regimented with something it just becomes another check off my to do list. When I feel like I need to reset, I’ll throw on a guided meditation. I love the calm app or recordings from the energy healer I work with. Typically this ends up being in the afternoon. I’ve recently begun to regularly clear the energy of my space. I have a lot of people in and out of my office so it can get kind of hectic. I’ll burn palo santo or use my crystal wand daily.

Bodywork or workouts - what workouts do you love?

I love hot yoga! My favorite style is vinyasa flow. It resets me mentally and keeps my body strong which is what I look for in a movement routine.

I also really enjoy hiking when I get the time, anything that gets me outside in nature.

Products - what products do you find that you use daily?

So many!! I love finding new ones, so it’s always changing. Supplement-wise Nutrex Hawaiian Spirulina, Global Healing B12, Mary Ruth’s Certified Organic Liquid Multi/Minerals, Organic India Tulsi Tea and Ashwagandha. For skincare I’ve been using Shiva Rose and Skin Worship products. I’m also obsessed with Body Vibes smart frequency stickers! They’re stickers programed with bio frequencies that target everything from anxiety to toxins.

When it comes to food, I am a fan of Kite Hill Almond Cheese and Leaf Cuisine Cashew Cheese on gluten free bread called, KNOW.  I love the fermented foods from Sonoma Brinery. I also love coconut yogurt and keep Coconut Cult in my fridge.  I like superfood proteins powders from Philosophie and Amazing Grass. I keep LOVE water from The Divine H2O at the office and drink daily. I like to have Cashew Malk around for my smoothies.  I add organic Navitas Hemp Seeds to just about everything.

Routines - any routines you’re committed to?

I try not to get too rigid with anything. Self-care has been big for me lately though. This means doing things that create more mental/physical time and space for myself. I’ve been working on not looking at my phone first thing in the morning - it’s a work in progress! I also try to book a reflexology massage once a week and an infrared sauna.

A Day In The Life : Heather Culp, Photographer

July 3, 2017

I don’t really have a typical day as my work varies but I try to keep up with my morning rituals and if it’s a day where I’m working from home also try to get down to the beach for a quick swim or surf. After spending nearly a decade in NYC I wanted to live in closer proximity to nature. Now living in Topanga Canyon, I can hike from my house and be at the beach in just a few minutes. I have an Aussie who helps motivate me to wake up early and hike or trail run. If I don’t have to leave the canyon for an early shoot or meeting then when I get back I do some light yoga and a short meditation (TM).

I love listening to a podcast or music while I do my routine of oil pulling + potions. Every morning I take sea minerals (either Blue Ocean or QuintEssentials), Amino blend, probiotics, and a shot of warm water with Sun Potion Chlorella and Health Force’s Greener Grasses. If I feel like I need it I’ll also take some typo-spheric Vitamin C. I love doing some sort of warm potion instead of breakfast and it’s easy to take with me if I have to get on the road. I’ll get into something for a month or two and then switch it up. A few of my faves are turmeric golden milk and my version of bullet proof coffee made with Canyon Coffee, Organic Pastures Raw Grass-fed Butter, Vital Proteins Grass-fed Collagen and Sun Potion Reishi.

I make an effort to eat as clean as possible - no GMO’s, no gluten or refined sugar and grass-fed, pasture raised meats. It really doesn’t feel restrictive to me as I’ve found so many amazing alternatives to the sort of treats I used to eat and I feel so much better than I did when I was younger. I was often sick, had asthma, etc...and now it’s extremely rare that I even get a cold. However, even considering all this it’s also important to let things go on occasion and so if I’m on a road trip I’ll probably end up eating something I would never eat otherwise. For me it’s important to be as conscientious as possible but not rigid because that’s just adding another kind of stress into life.

I’m passionate about supporting anyone who is making amazing products and/or educating about holistic health. It’s important we become our own authorities on health instead of depending on the mainstream system we currently have in this country which is highly problematic. Luckily part of my job is to discover and connect with health and wellness practitioners and companies and so I get to try new treatments and products all the time. Some practitioners / practices / talks / products currently on the list:

Thea Annya Nathan / reiki sessions

Sun Potion Tocos & Pine Pollen

Elisa Romeo / Soul Journaling
