ASTARA: Luxury Wellness Footwear, with Founder Mariah Lyons

November 16, 2018

What makes Astara a unique shoe brand?

ASTARA is the first and only luxury crystalline grounding footwear brand. There is a grounding technology piece in each sole of the shoe that has been programmed and radiates at the same frequency of the Earth. This resonance is 7.83hz and is called the Schumann Resonance. This frequency has been shown to promote overall balance and harmony within the body. In addition, these shoes also work with crystalline technology and each shoe is adorned with a specific crystal.

How do you combine science and spirituality to revolutionize footwear?

Contrary to many skeptics, science and spirituality are very closely related and intertwined, and yet in many ways, science is still catching up to what mystics, healers and spiritual leaders have known and taught for eons. Scientifically speaking, the component in the sole of the shoe is programmed with a resonance machine that is similar to what NASA uses to keep astronauts grounded to the Earth’s frequency when in space. The stored frequency 7.83 hz, called the Schumann Resonance, vibrates out to the wearer, and under the principles of quantum resonance, similar to tuning forks, the body moves into resonance and vibration with this frequency.

Spiritually speaking, when I received the download for this line, part of the vision shown was the image of a global grid of light. The information given was that when individuals continue to awaken to their true sovereign Self within, they embody more fully their true essence of light, and wherever their journeys lead, they are physically grounding light frequencies into the Earth and into the collective consciousness. The more people awaken and live intentionally and consciously, the more light particles there are on the Earth, the vibration raises, consciousness raises, and we experience more peace, connection and harmony as a planet and collective. I see these shoes as one piece of the puzzle, helping individuals to connect with the Earth, walk with intention, stepping further into themselves.

How do you choose the crystals you use?

I work with incredible family run businesses that sustainably source the stones. As crystals store energy within them, it’s important to me how and from whom I receive them. The first collection was comprised of Clear Quartz, Black Onyx and Rose Quartz. I chose these 3 as the initial collection as they have different and unique vibrations. I feel crystals similar to musical tones, and these 3 harmonize nicely, a low-medium-high tone. Also these stones are familiar for most clients, it was a great way to introduce people to the concept of working intentionally with gemstones on their clothing by using stones they might already have a connection with.

For my next collection, the stones are very unique and quite rare. I chose them for their vibratory rate, gorgeous unique color tones and inclusions within the stones, so each pair of shoes is truly one of a kind.

What healers have inspired you on your journey?

I have been greatly inspired by healers from different ancient civilizations, including Ancient Egyptian, Greek, Polynesian, and Celtic healers. As well as healers from the distant future, and along parallel timelines.

How did your journey into footwear begin?

I was a classically trained professional dancer for many years. I was extremely aware of the connection between our feet and the ground, and how we relate to the floor beneath. After dance I moved into the fashion space, and was a stylist and then luxury fashion publicist. I actually ended up in-house at Jimmy Choo for many years. It was there in my corporate setting, that I began to have health issues arise. I continued to deep dive into different modalities, as began to notice how sensitive my body was/is to EMFs. Back then there was only one book about grounding and one company that made “grounding” mats for under your computer and bed at home. I loved these and noticed a slight difference, and it was then that I started to dream up a shoe that felt as if you were walking on the ground, receiving the Earth’s healing vibrations, but was style and design oriented as well. Being a dancer, I loved feeling my feet and the connection to the Earth, but I also love a beautiful well-crafted shoe, realized they did not have to be mutually exclusive. Never would have imagined this would be my life, but it’s almost as if everything was leading me to this point. To be a bridge, and help people heal, find harmony within and connection to the Earth.

How does Astara promote positive female empowerment?

ASTARA is built on intentional and conscious living. We encourage women to set an intention into the stones and each pair of shoes, and allow the intention to radiate in their field with every step they take, encouraging women each day to take conscious and action oriented steps forward towards the life of their dreams.

What makes you grounded?

My sun sign is Gemini, I am quite the dreamer, and air sign and have spent most of my life creating and wandering in other realms. Staying grounded and centered has been my biggest teacher and medicine. You truly create the medicine you need. What keeps me grounded now is my acute awareness. I instantly feel when I start to become ungrounded or when my nervous system is on overdrive, I change my breath and my thought patterning and root back into my body. In addition, having structure within my day and practicing my daily rituals such as meditation and prayer help to keep me grounded.

Tel Aviv Travel Guide

October 24, 2018

Article by: Tori Kempter

From the moment I arrived in Tel Aviv I knew: this is the beginning. It felt like the beginning of a great journey, an adventure. The beginning of change. Tel Aviv does that for you. It brings out your wild side, the sun lighting up every dark thought you might have, the beach washing away every last fear.

Still, many people are scared of traveling to Tel Aviv or rather Israel, as it is surrounded by war zones and likely to become one itself at any given moment. I’ve hardly ever felt as safe in a city as I do in Tel Aviv. It’s protected by the best middle defense system and there are many soldiers that you see all over the city.

To me, there are two approaches to describe the Tel Aviv vibe, the horribly cheesy abbreviation YOLO and the beautiful Hebrew word “balagan”.

If you are a person that thinks of herself to live in the moment, have Tel Aviv put you to the test — it’s all about embracing the now. How could it be different in a tiny country existing with the knowledge that every single one of its neighbors is not, let’s put it lightly, their biggest fan?

Balagan whatsoever is a word best described as „beautiful chaos“, which matches Tel Aviv like banana matches peanut butter. Public transport, for instance, gives you the following options: the train, which is basic and easy but really doesn’t take you anywhere within the city. Here the bus line network comes to play. Crosslinking the whole city – if not country – in a confusing but somehow functioning way, never on time but reliable outside of Shabbat. For Shabbat – beginning Friday afternoon and ending Saturday after sunset – sheruts are your best friend. And they too illustrate balagan in a way: you never know when they come, sometimes you don’t even know if they come, but they reliably drop you off wherever you feel like.

THINGS TO DO

Discover Jaffa’s stories and mysteries

The ancient port city is the oldest part of Tel Aviv, famous for its association with the biblical stories. Its small alleys resemble Mediterranean charm and hide many galleries and cute boutiques. Be sure to make your wish at your zodiac sign on the wishing bridge!

Hit the beach

A city that shuts down every weekend for 36 hours completely needs to have something else to offer: the Beach. No matter if you SUP, surf or sunbath (or burn) the broad coast extending along the cityscape is worth spending an afternoon or a full day!

Suk Ha’Carmel

The Shuk is an experience in itself with its many stands of fresh produce and exotic spices, middle eastern treats, jewelry, makeup - anything you can imagine, really! Here you also find the best and cheapest humus I have gotten my lips on so far. At the center of the Shuk, look for an entrance captioned with the big beautiful word humus. As for dessert, be sure to try some flavors of delicious Halva.

Do yoga

Tel Aviv is kind of a spiritual Mekka and offers many great opportunities to deepen your practice. Next to to Yoga festivals and Dynamic Osho Meditations, there’s regular events and classes all over the city. Go to Facebook to find out about the latest Sunset- or Yoga in the Park-events and check out donation based "Yoga to the People" in Abraham Hostel.

Check out whats going on on Secret Tel Aviv

As an English speaker, your (social) life is more or less made possible by Secret Tel Aviv, keeping you up to date with all events, parties, and trends populating the city.

FOOD & DRINKS

Israeli cuisine itself is a pure treat: Hummus, Falafel, Pita, Eggplant, Veggies – my personal Mekka. But Hummus isn’t the only thing you get to enjoy here and the vegan scene especially is flourishing.

Anastasia

A one hundred percent Vegan cafe offering breakfast, brunch, and lunch. No sugar, no wheat, no animal products and fresh produce. My personal recommendations are the chickpea-omelet-sandwich and their acai-bowl. Oh, and you really shouldn’t miss out on the shakes!

54 Frishman Street, Tel Aviv-Yafo | facebook

Cafe Xoho

Another fave. Not completely vegan, Xoho offers healthy food that still invites you too indulge. Creative creations are to be awed at especially regarding pancakes (vegan options for these, too!). My former non-vegan me would have recommended their eggs with the delicious gluten-free bread. And Vegan-Tori won’t stop dreaming of their matcha smoothie topped with crumbles of the local specialty Halva.

17 J. L. Gordon Street, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Dosa Bar

This vegan, gluten-free and sugar-free Indian restaurant makes you wonder why you’d ever want to not be vegan! Crepes made of fermented rice filled with different curries and mouthwatering desserts.

Ben Yehuda St 188, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Phi

You want a drink with that? You better! The community garden of Alphabet – Phi – offers the best cocktails for any healthy foodie: when chosen the type alcohol you get to decide between fresh-pressed juices and tea to mix with it.

Ahad Ha'Am St 54, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Cafe Dizengoff

Feel like doing Happy Hour and grabbing some dinner with it? Cafe Dizengoff has you covered! The cocktail card is short but creative as it is delicious. My absolute fave is the Eggplant Sabich (another local specialty consisting of eggplant on a bed of tahini, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and an optional egg.

Dizengoff St 190, Tel Aviv-Yafo

The Prince

Artsy rooftop garden-vibes right around the corner of Shuk Ha’Carmel. This bar draws in a crowd of cool kids, mixing delicious cocktails and offering good food. The portions aren’t too big – which is good considering that my favorite ice cream shop is right around the corner.

Nahalat Binyamin St 18, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Bana

Another vegan Mecca, Bana lures you with creative and beautiful dishes, a lovely atmosphere and 1+1 on all cocktails on Sundays and Mondays.

Nahmani St 36, Tel Aviv-Yafo

HaKosem

Prepare for the best falafel in town! Don't believe me? Luckily enough you get to try a piece of its gorgeousness while waiting in line. Another extra: you're free to take as much as you like from their salad and salsa. My personal fave is the classic falafel in a gluten-free pita.

Shlomo ha-Melekh St 1, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Shila

This fancy location is booked out constantly for a reason. Make sure to get your table with famous cook Sharon Cohen in time!

Ben Yehuda St 182, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Salva Vida

Prepare for delicious creations and – a rare sight – lovely staff. My recommendation: share the starters and roll with the seafood!

HaYarkon St 88, Tel Aviv-Yafo

Arte Artesian Ice Cream

A hidden gem on Nahaliyat Binjamin, Arte offers not only a wide variety of vegan flavors (think three different types of chocolate), but also forgoes the extra sugar in the delicious fruit flavors. My favorite combination (so far): passionfruit and peach-lavender

Nahalat Binyamin St 11, Tel Aviv-Yafo

SHOPPING

Tel Aviv’s streets lure you in with many boutiques featuring handpicked pieces local and international designers in every price range. Tel Aviv artists give their jewelry a creative spin that is definitely influenced by the local and their personal culture alike. Next to the many jewelry stands at Shuk Ha’Carmel and on Jaffa’s Fleamarket here are some of my favorite shops to browse and treat myself with a little extra.

Neve Tsedek
This was the first Jewish neighborhood outside the ancient port of Jaffa. Since the early 1980s, Neve Tzedek has become one of Tel Aviv's latest fashionable and expensive districts, with a village-like atmosphere.

Take your time to wander down Dizengoff street, checking out the fun boutiques featuring many local brands. And if you’re craving one or the other international brand, it will lead you right to the Dizengoff Center Mall.

Nahalat Binjamin and Matalon Street are a paradise to get inspired: stores filled with beads and chains, feathers and flowers, tulle and fabrics. So no matter if you prepare for one of Israel’s fabulous holidays such as Purim, for an insane week at Midburn or you just like to add some extra glitter to your life – be sure to bring a friend, time and bargaining skills.

Mango Tree
My absolute favorite. The two locations of this artesian shop give you the amazing opportunity to customize everything. Love the idea, the colors not so much? Change the beads? Their designs give a hippie-vibe while staying on the elegant and fragile side, using delicate chains and beautiful pearls.

https://mangotreeshop.com

Nano (Jaffa)
This local artist engraves prayers, mantras, and wishes onto small pendants so they can only be read with a magnifying glass. The pendants are gems, carved to perfection into hearts, rounds or hamsa, the delicate carvings are gold.

https://www.nano-jewelry.com

Daniela Dor (Jaffa) is a local jewelry designer with an elegant hippie vibe and unique pieces.

https://www.facebook.com/Daniela-dor-jewelry-1022788264403705/

Stone Age is paradise for all you magical crystal lovers out there. A store filled with gorgeous gems and love. The owners and staff authentically keep the spirits high, gladly sharing their knowledge and stories.

GOING OUT

Tel Aviv’s nightlife is often compared to the raving weekends of Berlin. Take it from a Berlin-lover: Tel Aviv is way less pretentious and you won’t spend hours in lines. That said, there are definitely similarities in the music scene. It’s mostly Techno, followed by HipHop or, as the trend globally seems to be going there: Reggaeton. As for the Locations…

The Block

Supposedly inspired by Berlin’s infamous Berghain, The Block is the kind of techno club asking you not to use your phone, giving one the freedom to live the moment and let go.
http://www.block-club.com

Sputnik

One of my fave locations, a fusion of bar and club, giving you the chance to dance the night away or enjoy the bar – indoors or outdoors.
https://www.facebook.com/sputnikTLV/

Alphabet

The collective involving my beloved bar Phi gives space for techno parties under the names of Alpha and Gamma. The community garden – Phi – offers the best cocktails for any healthy foodie: when chosen the type alcohol you get to decide between fresh-pressed juices and tea to mix with it.
https://www.alphabet-club.com

Bootleg

One of the more renown clubs, Bootleg throws many parties that are great for those not too keen about the techno scene. The colorful underground club invites you with a wide variety of sets that bounce from deep house to disco, creating a modest yet vibrant atmosphere.
http://bootlegclub.com

Kuli Alma

Voted the best bar in Tel Aviv by locals, the first thing I heard about it was from my roommate: „They have Vodka Slushies!“ So no matter if you go for the hype, the drinks or the dance floors – one for DJs, one for live music – Kuli Alma is worth a visit.

https://kulialma.com

SLEEP

Despite being a city that literally never sleeps (except for maybe all Saturday on the beach, as the city more or less shuts down – including public transport – for Shabbat), you need to get your well-earned beauty-rest.

Setai
In for a super fancy treat? Setai has you covered from head to toe luxury.
22 David Raziel, Tel Aviv

Brown Beach
The contemporary boutique Hotel is your spot if you want to find a stylish yet cozy home on the beach – a soulful tribute to the iconic 1950-60’s Miami beach scene.

64 Ha'Yarkon street, Tel Aviv 6343220

Poli House Hotel
This distinctive modern design boutique hotel in Tel Aviv is the embodiment of the urban eccentricities, diversity and personalities that shape the city. The stylish gem is located right on Shuk Ha’Carmel, giving you the opportunity to feel the pumping heart of the city.

Nahalat Binyamin st. corner of 62 Allenby, Tel Aviv 6343220

Abraham Hostel
In case you’re traveling on a budget or just up for some adventures, Abraham Hostel is the place to be. The coolest hostel by far lures locals and tourists alike with its hospitality, offering everything from in-house yoga classes to tours and events all over the country.

Liver Detox Tea

September 18, 2018

By: Molly Helfend

We all are guilty of misusing our bodies. With daily stressors and environmental pollutants, living perfectly is sadly impractical and our liver is what truly gets the brunt of these lifestyle choices. The liver is one of the largest and most vital organs of the body, which acts as a filter, eliminating environmental toxins, synthesizing hormones, aiding in the absorption of vitamins, creating bile to digest fats and carbohydrates, cleansing impurities from blood and modulating inflammation. Quite a mouthful. Simply put, it is the ultimate detoxifying machine!

When we add impurities to the body such as a poor diet of processed and fatty foods, alcohol and drug consumption and a cocktail of toxins already present in our environment, we adversely affect the liver’s ability to properly modulate and optimize its functions. The liver is one of the hardest working organs. “The tremendous amount of blood that floods into the liver not only contains oxygen and nutrients, but also has toxins that the liver must filter out…[and] once the liver cleanses and processes the blood, it then sends that blood to various areas of the body” (Anthony William, 2018). So, when the liver is burdened and sluggish, we see symptoms in the form of allergies, headaches, autoimmune disorders, neurological issues, constipation, muscle tension, fatigue and much more. In women alone, PMS, fibroid tumors, and endometriosis can be signs of an unhealthy liver. Surprisingly, not many people are aware that even skin issues such as acne, dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis are actually due to an overburdened liver.

It’s important to remember that “the more toxic your liver is, the more likely you are to develop wrinkles and other skin problems that are typically associated with aging…[and] cleaning out the toxins from your toxin-saturated liver is an essential part of addressing” not only skin issues, but overall physical and mental wellness (Anthony William, 2018). A great way to reboot your liver and provide a healthy detox is through the use of herbs. Bitter herbs are wonderful for stimulating and re-grounding the digestion, acting as an aid for digestive enzyme production.

Liver-Detox-Pathyways-Required-Nutrients-Image2.jpg

This tea recipe is evenly distributed between each liver decongesting herb. Honeysuckle, represented with the earth element, cools the heart with remnants of pastel hues and elegant fragrances. It has a subtle vanilla flavor and is known for cooling inflamed conditions by clearing heat and removing toxicity from the body. Honeysuckle contains inositol, luteolin, tannins, volatile oils, and salicylic acid. It is also special for its renowned spiritual remedies, which have been useful for inducing dreams of passion and helping those who suffer from nostalgic dwelling. Honeysuckle is astringent, depurative, diuretic, expectorant, anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Artichokes are more than a delicious vegetable treat to be dipped in butter. The entire plant happens to be medicinal. Used in this tea recipe and represented with the water elements, artichoke leaves are very high in antioxidants, which aid and protect the liver and gallbladder. They are rich in inulin, lutolin and cynarin, making them great for sluggish digestion and poor absorption. In addition, the bitter leaves alleviate mild indigestion and detoxify and protect the digestive tract. Its herbal actions include chalagogue, depurative, hepatic, diuretic, hepatoprotective, choleretic, and antiemetic. Dandelion, represented with the air elements, is a wild, free and abundant herb, rich in vitamin A, C and D, as well as, iron, potassium, calcium, and inulin. This bitter herb is a diuretic, alterative, urinary tonic and liver and kidney decongestant.

Burdock is the quite a strong bitter herb. Represented with the water elements, burdock’s clearing energy removes digestive congestion. It is also great for skin conditions like acne, eczema and psoriasis. Its herbal actions include alterative and cholagogue. Tangy licorice root has multifaceted medicinal benefits. Represented with water elements, it is fantastic for adrenal depletion, ulcer removal, heartburn and acid reflux and chronic viral infections. The root is expectorant, demulcent, anti-inflammatory, and anti-viral. Milk thistle is quintessential herb for stimulating the digestion. Represented with the fire elements, it is rich in antioxidants that fight free radicals, stimulate liver function and rebuild cells, as well as, improve gallbladder and kidney health. After a night out of drinking alcohol, I usually recommend my friends reach for milk thistle to detoxify. Its herbal actions include cholagogic, choleretic, tonic, galactagogue, hepatoprotective, and alterative. Lastly, I would recommend reading Anthony William’s Medical Medium and order his new book Liver Rescue for more information about life changing food tips to implement into your diet to detoxify your liver.

Liver Detox Tea

(yields about 10 cups)

  • 1 tablespoon of dried honeysuckle flowers

  • 1 tablespoon of dried artichoke leaf

  • 1 teaspoon of dried dandelion root

  • 1 teaspoon of dried burdock root

  • 1 teaspoon of dried licorice root

  • 1 teaspoon dried milk thistle seeds

Because this is a complex multi-part tea, it is recommended you make both a decoction with the roots and seeds and infusion with the flowers and leaves. To do this, add about 4 cups of cold water to a pot then add the licorice, burdock, dandelion and milk thistle. Gently simmer the herbs for at least 10 minutes.

Once ready, strain the tea into a large glass jar and let them settle. Next, boil 6 cups of cold water in your pot of choice. To make the infusion of honeysuckle and artichoke, pour the boiling water over the herbs and allow the tea to steep covered for 5-10 minutes. Make sure to cover the tea to keep the heat from dissipating. Once ready, strain into the glass jar with the root and seed decocted liquid. Squeeze some fresh lemon and be sure to sweeten the mixture with raw honey. Enjoy this tea up to 3 times a day for a gentle cleansing detox.

The Power of Oregano Oil

September 6, 2018

Have you ever wondered what the most POTENT way to kill a virus is? And no, its not an antibiotic, well lets just say it’s NATURE’S antibiotic. When most people think of oregano, they think of sprinkling dried goodness into Italian dishes for an aromatic punch. However, oregano is much more than a culinary herb. It is highly medicinal and has been used for centuries, containing some of the highest antioxidant properties of any other plant on the planet. Again, call it nature’s antibiotic, without the side effects. And, one of the most potent ways to extract its medicinal properties is by taking essential oil of oregano.

But, let's start from the beginning. Oregano has been used for centuries across the globe, from ancient Mediterranean civilizations to modern European households. “According to Greek mythology, oregano was created by goddess Aphrodite as a symbol of happiness. For this reason, the Greek believed using oregano in marriage ceremony would provide joy and usage of oregano in funerals would convey peace to the dead. After the Romans conquered the Greek, the Romans inherited the use of oregano and the Romans were the ones responsible for the extensive use of oregano all over Europe and abroad. After that, with time this herb found itself a journey from the Middle East to China. In China, they used oregano exclusively for medicinal purposes. As for the United States, oregano did not seem to find itself much popularity until the World War II” (Naturehacks, 2015).

Viruses are the silent killers. They are to blame for hundreds of mystery illnesses and symptoms and worst of all, doctors are not believing they exist or can simply find them! “If doctors were to seriously look for these pathogens in their patients coming into their offices with a long list of mysterious symptoms, they would come up dry. Most tests the blood lab offers cannot detect the viruses and bacteria that are invading so many people and causing so many conditions and symptoms. Many of the pathogens causing autoimmune labeled illnesses are yet to be discovered and classified; therefore, it would be quite impossible to detect. You can’t find something when you do not know what you are looking for” (Anthony William, 2018). For example, one virus highlighted throughout Anthony William’s protocols and research is the infamous Epstein Barr Virus. It ravages people access the globe, lying dormant with low grade symptoms to taking over when one is most stressed. In short, “the Epstein-Barr virus has created a secret epidemic. Out of the roughly 320 million people in the U.S., over 225 million Americans have some form of EBV that's affecting their life. Medical communities are aware of only one version of EBV, but there are actually over 60 varieties. They have no idea how the virus operates long-term and how problematic it can be. The truth is, EBV is the source of numerous health problems that are currently considered mystery illnesses, including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disorders, lupus, Lyme disease, tinnitus, vertigo, and much more” (Anthony William, 2016).

Oregano-oil-could-cut-food-poisoning-from-prep-surfaces_wrbm_large.jpg
Oregano-plant-Greek-oregano-sept-2015.jpg

Oregano is extremely powerful, proving such benefits as being anti-parasitic, bacterial, viral, fungal, inflammatory, and septic. Your immune system will literally eat it up, using it to fight off infection. Its also incredible for treatment of colds, flus, and respiratory, digestive and lymphatic issues, as well as balancing your metabolism. “It is an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, B-complex, potassium, calcium, iron, and magnesium” (Williams, 2015). Oregano oil also contains carvacrol and thymol, which are compounds that fight bacteria and fungi with a potent punch. It is pretty much the magic herb that cures ailments far and wide.

One of my favorite ways to experiment with oregano oil is by taking a pill with me when I eat out at restaurants. Taken with mystery meals, it can absorb toxins and lessen negative reactions from certain foods. Oregano oil is also the absolute strongest way to kill the strep virus. Make a strep-eliminating oil pull by mixing two to three drops of oregano oil with coconut oil and gargle this mixture for 10 minutes. Repeat as needed. Make sure to not get any on your lips, as it’s strong enough to burn them. Lastly, it will become your best friend for travel - do not forget your bottle at home!

This is one of Anthony Williams favorite supplemental healing solutions. In his research and books, he truly dives into its power on the gut, but strongly recommends not taking it everyday, as it is very powerful. Please work your immunity up and take oregano oil in increments. We truly recommend Gaia Oil of Oregano tablets. Gaia Herbs sells some of, if not the most, potent and high quality single herb and herb blends on the market. We trust them with almost all of our health needs and use them on a regular basis.

Beekeeper's Naturals with Founder Carly

August 23, 2018

Right now we keep reading the science about bees going extinct. What are you doing to help the bee population?

Love this question! At BKN, saving the bees is our bottom line. Yes, we work hard to share their hive superfoods with the world, but, in our eyes, the bees always come first.

Somebody has to look out for these little guys. Not only do they single-handedly pollinate ⅓ of our global food supply—yeah, we seriously need them—but they are fascinating, highly sophisticated little creatures.

A lot of people think about bees as mindless drones, but that’s not at all the case. They are actually really intelligent. They use ultra-specific dances to communicate complicated messages to each other. They even have a mathematical intelligence that rivals human toddlers! And, of course, they create some of the world’s most nourishing foods. For so many reasons bees are awesome.

But, you’re right, bees are in trouble. Between climate change, harmful toxins, and widespread habitat loss, bees are dying in huge numbers. Pretty much all across North America, bees are having a hard time finding food that isn’t coated in harmful pesticides. Many farmlands use tons of toxic pesticides that absolutely decimate hives and indiscriminately kill pollinators.

We try to combat this by partnering with only the cleanest small scale apiaries. We give our bees access to pesticide-free plant life and house them in remote locations to minimize exposure to the toxins that are polluting our earth. While we may not be able to control our globally shifting seasons, we can provide a clean habitat and food supply for our bees. And it pays off for us, too. Happy bees make the absolute best propolis! We also partner with some fantastic bee related charitable organizations - UC Davis Bee Research Facility and The Canadian Bee Research Fund.

How can we donate and help save bees in our daily lives?

A lot of people don’t realize that what they buy at the grocery store really matters. When you’re filling up your cart, it’s crucial to make sure every item aligns with an ethos you can stand behind, because you are literally putting your money where your mouth is. To support bees, that means buying organic and pesticide free as often as you can, buying raw honey products, and looking for brands that prioritize sustainability.

Another easy way to make a real impact on your local bee population is to plant a bee garden. Bees need access to clean food, so providing our pollinators with organic, untreated plant life to feast on is one of the best ways to help. And if you make sure that something is always in bloom—whether it is spring, summer, or fall—you’re ensuring that the bees have clean food to feast on year-round! It also helps to build a bee bath, so that bees have fresh water nearby—yes, bees need water, too! Just do a little research to make sure your plant choices and bath-design are truly pollinator-friendly.

Beyond your yard, taking action against pesticides is critically important. Write in to your local government, stop using them on your lawn asap, and check in to the many different organizations that support bees. We work closely with UC Davis Bee Research and the Canadian Bee Research Fund, but there are a number of other organizations doing great things. You can donate to our partner charities directly here and here. We also give 10% of the profits from our “Save the Bees” apparel to our charity partners, if you want to rock the cause.

Tell us more about the power of propolis…

Propolis is a health essential for me, especially during cold and flu season! I call it nature’s ultimate defender. Bees make propolis from plant and tree resins and use it to protect their hive from bacteria, fungi, and viruses. While honey is used as a bee’s food, you can think of propolis as their medicine or the foundations of the hive’s immune system.

The bees actually line the entire hive with propolis, including the cells of newborn bees in order to create a germ-free environment. They even have a propolis mat at the front door to ensure no one drags nasty germs into the hive. For the bees, propolis keeps them healthy. And for humans, it has many of the same effects.

One of my favorite things about propolis is its rich healing history. Aristotle is thought to have coined the term ‘propolis’, which means defender of the city. Hippocrates was a big fan. Even Cleopatra used it. The first recorded human use of propolis actually dates back to 300 BC.

For me, propolis is my favorite way to get an immune boost and speed up my recovery time if I’m feeling sick. It’s antiviral, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, loaded with antioxidants, and contains over 300 beneficial compounds. There is a ton of good research out there confirming the natural immune-boosting effects of propolis, and it really does work. As someone who grew with up constant sore throats and colds, propolis has been a game-changer for my overall health. And it is actually the single superfood that got me involved with the bees in the first place.

Where did your love of bees begin?

I’ve always been obsessed with nature, insects, and animals, but I really developed my love for bees after falling for all the amazing products they make.

As a college student, I struggled with recurring tonsillitis. On my semester abroad in Europe it got particularly bad. I am allergic to most antibiotics so, without a cure in sight, I was on the cusp of cutting my trip short and flying home for surgery. Desperate for a natural cure, I was given a bottle of propolis by an Italian pharmacist. I really had no idea what it was and I was skeptical, especially after years of buying in to the latest and greatest superfood fads only to wind up disappointed by a lack of results. But, desperate to solve my health problem, I gave it a shot.

After one week of propolis, I was amazed that it actually worked! The propolis had taken down the inflammation and soothed the soreness, and I was on the path to recovery—sans side effects. I was able to fully recuperate and complete my time in Europe feeling healthier than ever.

When I returned home, I couldn’t find this magical healer at the local health food store, so I began beekeeping to ensure I never had to go propolis-free again (years of strep, tonsillitis, and a weak immune system will do that to you). Once I started spending time around hives, I was hooked. I began learning about the unique benefits of the different bee products, using royal jelly for a mental boost or fresh bee pollen to get my vitamins.

Even more, I started exploring and understanding the integral role the bees play on our planet. I was fascinated with the fact that they make up the pillars of our ecosystem and blown away by the intricate societies they form. Today that fascination has developed into a serious love affair.

What is the most beautiful thing about bees?

I find the way the bees all work together for the collective good to be so beautiful. In the hive everyone has a job, from a nurse bee to a forager. Each of the ladies contributes to the betterment and survival of the hive. I could go into more detail about all of the specific tasks and practices that go on in the hive, but I would probably rant on for 3 pages! Bees are so amazing!

What are the benefits of raw honey that most people don’t know?

Raw honey is an amazing beauty food. It is rich in antioxidants and contains around 27 minerals and 5,000 enzymes, which means it promotes beauty and wellness from the inside out. I also do raw honey face masks with our B.Powered superfood honey once a week. Beyond beauty, my favourite honey hack is using it optimize my sleep.

Honey works on two levels to give you a killer night of shut-eye. First, a small teaspoon before bed stimulates the release of tryptophan in the brain—you know, the amino acid that promotes sleep after Thanksgiving turkey. There, it is converted into serotonin, which, in the darkness, is then converted to melatonin, a well-known sleep aid. Raw honey also helps to stock glycogen levels in the liver, which prevents your body from waking up before your alarm clock in a crisis search for fuel.

These days, I do a teaspoon of our B.Chill hemp honey every night before bed and sleep like a baby.

You have a large variety of honey products. Can you tell us about the difference between them? How can we navigate the products and buy for our health?

Bees make much more than honey! At BKN, we like to go beyond honey, working with powerful hive superfoods like propolis, bee pollen, and royal jelly. Most people in North America are only familiar with honey, but cultures around the world have used these ingredients for their beneficial properties for centuries.

  • First, propolis, which is generally associated with immunity. Propolis is collected by bees from plant and tree resins. In the hive, propolis functions as the bees’ immune system. It lines the inside of the hive and is used to protect the hive from bacteria, parasites, and viruses. For example, if a mouse gets inside the hive, the bees will sting it to death, then actually mummify it with propolis to prevent any viruses or bacteria on the decaying mouse from infecting the rest of the hive (gross, but also amazing!). In our bodies, propolis has a similar effect of boosting immune function and keeping unwelcomed viruses and bacteria at bay. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory, which is why our Propolis Throat Spray is the perfect fix for a sore throat.
  • Bees also make royal jelly, which I like to think of as a brain-boosting longevity elixir. As the ultimate hive superfood, it’s used to feed all baby bees and is the exclusive food source of the queen. Royal jelly contains high amounts of protein, lipids, vitamins, enzymes, and minerals—and its nutrient density has not been replicated by science. For humans, nutrient-rich royal jelly is great for naturally supporting improved memory, concentration, and focus, which is why we use royal jelly in our natural nootropic, B.LXR.
  • Bee pollen is an excellent protein source for both humans and bees. If you can believe it, bee pollen contains more protein per gram than most animal sources! And because it's full of free-forming amino acids, it’s a protein source that is really easy for your body to digest and absorb, making it great for athletes fueling up both pre- and post-workout. We blend bee pollen into our Bee Powered raw honey, along with royal jelly and propolis, so you can reap the benefits of the full spectrum of hive superfoods in one sweet spoonful!
  • Another exciting product that we just launched is B.Chill hemp honey. We blended high potency hemp oil and MCT oil with our raw honey to create the ultimate formula for crushing stress and anxiety as well as supporting quality sleep. I am so excited by the health benefits of CBDs and love that they work really synergistically with our enzymatic raw honey.

What are your top 3 beauty products?

  1. Bee Powered for face masks — Our Bee Powered is a nourishing blend of all the hive superfoods: royal jelly, propolis, raw honey, and bee pollen. While I have always taken a spoonful of it daily, I’ve heard that Cleopatra used bee products topically to get her glow on. Given the incredible anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants, enzymes, and vitamins found in these superfoods, I figured I would test it out. Lo and behold, 15 minutes with Bee Powered on my face left my skin soft, clear, and glowing! Now I do it once every week!
  2. Kopari coconut oil – I cover my hair and skin in this. I also often spray in some propolis to kick up the protective moisturizing effects.
  3. Mother Dirt face wash – I have super sensitive skin and need to be careful with cleansers, but also realize how important good bacteria are to skin health. Mother Dirt cleaner is super gentle, doesn’t dry or strip my skin, and leaves the skin microbiome intact.

What does your self-care routine look like?

I work all the time and am often traveling, which makes balance a constant struggle. Because of this, I’ve tried to build self-care into my daily routine. I start every day with meditation and I love using the Muse Brain Sensing Headband. This may be the most type A approach to mindfulness, but being able to chart my progress and see the way I’m teaching my brain to be less reactive keeps me motivated to stay on track. I also start my days by jotting down 3 gratitudes and end my day with 3 things I am thankful for. I also believe that food is medicine and try to keep my diet clean and full of plant-based ingredients.

London Guide

July 6, 2018

By: Molly Helfend

Let me just say upfront, that London is one of the most expensive cities I have ever traveled to, so no matter where you go, you are most likely going to burn a hole in your pocket. That being said, it remains a city that truly captured my heart, in both the literal and figurative sense. Close-by to this megacity, Glastonbury, England emanates as the heart chakra of the world, therefore it makes perfect sense that London is the epicenter of the globe. Like a heart pumping blood throughout the body, London feeds the world with history and cultural diversity. I had the the privilege of living in Canterbury, Kent from September to April while getting my master’s degree and I took the train into London every week. Although the gloomy winter weather seems to bring the country into a grumpy slump, it never really stopped me from exploring, and there is still a special magic that will draw me back again soon. London is beyond eclectic and diverse with always something to do.

There is unlimited amounts of music and art to meander through. What I loved most was that it was one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. People from all walks of life and color live and travel here! I loved the rich conversations and cultures I immersed myself in. It is a humbling feeling observing the ancient architecture, as there is just so much history, both tragic and revolutionary. You truly can feel London’s pulse of energy as you skip through the puddles of rain (which I most definitely did after seeing some of my favorite bands).

Although I was not THAT impressed with the health and wellness scene, I still have to say its one of my favorite cities purely because I had such a great time solo traversing about, discovering pockets of beauty and civility everywhere. And, it’s a city that anyone would love, as you really can find any type of person here. I had no trouble finding my niche herbal enthusiasts or music lovers, while someone more interested in business or fashion, per say, can easily find their’s as well. I will never forget my moments alone traveling on the Underground tube, with my headphones plugged in, watching the fast paced motions of ever changing diversity, living their lives to my soundtrack of life.

I must admit the architecture and seating arrangements are a bit uncomfortable, but the delicious raw food more than makes up it. Make sure to snag some kale chips and granola from the takeaway out your way out!

Nama Foods

Sadly, one of the best raw food restaurants I have ever tried was recently shut down, but the owners are still teaching raw vegan classes, hosting private dining, raw vegan catering and more. They do sell items on website and have great prices for such high quality cuisine.

Cafe Van Gogh

Great, artsy atmosphere with wonderful, affordable vegan dishes. It is located in an edgy Brixton neighborhood, serving a young and hip crowd. Check out their seasonal small plates or even just pop by for a look around and a tea.

Jak’s

Great for a trendy, nice night out with a high quality mediterranean style buffet dinner. This is definitely a restaurant you would see some famous Brits, so dress to impress! Really lovely food options and very dietary restriction friendly.

Wulf & Lamb

This is the place to get the ultimate vegan burger. Honestly, it is expensive, but worth the splurge. Buy either the Wulf Burger or Spicy Veg Burger.

Farm Girl

Really well priced beverage menu. This Austrailian inspired health restaurant is right next to Portobello Road Market, so grab a drink or small snack and browse the stores. I have only tried their beverages, but I recommend getting the Hibiscus Matcha or Butterfly Matcha with hazelnut milk.

Farmacy

This is me and my godmother's favorite restaurant in Notting Hill, arguably London. Farmacy is completely plant-based and free from dairy, refined sugars, additives and chemicals. It’s so refreshing stepping out of eating traditional heavy english meals and find a restaurant that creates a balance of ease and health, without sacrificing flavor. We usually get a few plates to share, so I would recommend my favorites of the Macro Bowl and Farmacy Salad for lunch or the Bee Grateful and Protein “Omelette” for breakfast. Pretty much everything is incredible, including their raw dessert and tea menu.

Deliciously Ella

Created by the well known health blogger Ella, her restaurant serves deli style healthy food with twists on English cuisine. Very friendly staff who seem like genuinely love working for this company. I love their Maples Sweet Potatoes with Kale & Almonds, as well as, their juice selection.

The Palomar

Renowned Israeli food, specifically Jerusalem inspired meals. Perfect for a nice dinner out with friends or partners. Make a reservation - they fill up quickly!

Wild Food Cafe

If the colorful walls and climbing greenery doesn’t make you fall in love, then their seasonal fresh raw organic food will. It really is hard to find such delicate, nutritious food in England, but I definitely tried my best to sniff out the best of the best when it comes to raw plant-based meals. Their Forgotten Ecstasy smoothie and Ayurvedic Super Salad are to die for!

Zeret Kitchen

Not sure if any of our readers know, but Ethiopian food happens to be my favorite type of cuisine. All the amazing flavors and colors are spread out on a beautiful plate of injera, made of gluten free teff flour. I tried as many Ethiopian restaurants as I could from small hole in the walls to larger family-owned storefronts and I really did love the traditional atmosphere of Zeret Kitchen.

Tayyabs

London is renowned for having some of the best Indian and Punjabi food in the world. Tayyabs has some of highest quality Pakistani food and is a must go. Great prices with dietary restriction options. I recommend pretty much everything on the chef’s speciality.

El Pirata

This tapas restaurant is the perfect place to grab some drinks and small plates with friends before a night out. It won’t break the bank or make you feel like you are compromising on healthy food.

MARKETS

OldSpitalfieldsMarket.jpg
IMG_3951.JPG

Old Spitafields

Such a lovely way to spend a relaxing morning, browsing quirky shops and munching on unique food choices in this modern Victorian covered indoor market setting. There are over 70 retail stalls and street food traders, selling everything from crafts and fashion to food and wine. Open seven days a week and be sure to check out Brick Lane for more vintage shops.

Camden

Classic creative spot was made famous by Amy Winehouse. It is the super diverse and young community that make this eclectic market especially special. There are over 1,000 vibrant spots to shop, eat, drink, dance and enjoy! I had good friends who lived next to the market, so I became a regular vegan falafel fan at Magic Falafel.

Southbank Centre Food

This is perfect for a family friendly and enjoyable Sunday afternoon to explore fantastic worldly cuisines from Europe, Africa, Asia and America. Browse the market stalls and then take a stroll along the Southbank River to see historic views on London. I fell in love with the street Indian food stalls here.

Saturday Portobello Road

There is everything from vintage clothing to antique trinkets with a good mix of tourists and locals. One of the oldest markets in London, it really has an eclectic array of characters, items and prices. It feels like home to me because my godmother sells antiques here, so I got to know the atmosphere quite well early Saturday mornings, watching the sun rise, sipping tea with vendors and hearing everyone’s unique stories.

Street Feast

Great for a younger, hipper crowd looking for fun night markets and street food arenas. Dinerama is Storeditch’s street food market, which is definitely one of the coolest ones.

Go Out  (I personally like going to see live music when I go out, but if you want to find pubs, just ask locals in the various districts you are exploring)

Shacklewell Arms

The is my favorite music venue in England. I saw the Babe Rainbow here and it was such a groovy, intimate show. Its such a hip, cool environment with brick walls and colorful wacky lights hanging around. Bands cover everything from indie, new wave, post punk to psychedelia. Also, extremely reasonable pricing for tickets, food and drink.

Paper Dress Vintage

Daytime: a chic, quirky vintage store. Nighttime: a cosy atmosphere with bar and great live music.

The Spiritual Bar

Love this quaint bar nestled in Camden. I would come here after sweet Sofar Sound sessions at my friends’ flat. It has rustic welcoming energy and a bohemian vibe. My favorite experience was when we saw the most amazing jazz blues harp player that filled the bar with free-spirited jams. Come here to soak in eclectic art and find music off the beaten path.

Five Bells

Located by New Cross Gate, it used to be a proper local pub, but they changed it to a music venue. Locals are regulars, so it’s an interesting blend people every time. Bloody good time with down to earth people!

The Troubadour

Nothing but blues baby.

SHOP

neals-yard.jpg

Dee Zammit Antique Vintage & Decorative

My godmother is a world renowned antique dealer. You most definitely have to check out her shop in Essex or exquisite pieces every Saturday at Portobello Market and antique fairs across England. She easily has the best taste around.

Neal’s Yard Covent Garden

Located near the Seven Dials, Neal’s Yard is a dreamy place unlike anywhere in London, where you are transported to an urban garden atmosphere of colorful buildings and health conscious shopfronts.

Bulk Market

I love the concept of traveling with as little of a environmental footprint as possible. It’s important to support zero waste enterprises like this one that has all organic vegetables, breads, and cakes from local partners and make sure to bring travel containers and fill them with beans, rice, pasta, and spices.

The Source Bulk Foods

Another great place for sustainable travelers to bulk up whole foods, gluten free and vegan available, as well as grains, tea, chocolate, kombucha, and household items. They even have a peanut butter making machine and chocolates and protein balls.

Nunhead Gardener

Best plant shop which used to be a neglected urban space

Daylesford

Although pricey, I think quality organic food is worth it. Daylesford is one of the leading organic bio-groceries in London with well packaged local products and seasonal fresh food. They also have an all day deli that offers ready made dishes to eat on the spot or take away, as well as a cafe that you can go to for breakfast or lunch.

Planet Organic

Definitely my go-to health food store whenever I was on the go. They are completely organic and offer many health products from across the globe, including hard to find ones from the US. The have a delicious hot bar and drink menu, making delicious hazelnut milk matcha lattes and pitaya lattes for me.

MUSEUMS

barbican.jpg
IMG_4018.jpg

Barbican

An architect’s dream, you can wander the estate for hours. You are bound to find a couple of exhibitions that interest you, and one for free. It is the largest performing arts center in Europe, hosting events of dance, film, music, theatre and visual arts. It also has a cinema, 3 restaurants and a botanical conservatory.

Tate Modern

A world renowned contemporary art gallery with international works and incredible curated exhibitions. General entry is free.

Modern Art

Modern art gallery that is hidden behind Old Street, in a renovated pre-war factory.

Hayward Gallery

Great exhibition space and dynamic art gallery. It is a famous a landmark of Brutalist architecture.

Wellcome Collection

Interesting exhibits and pieces, as well as free inclusions. If you have an interest in the cultural aspects of science and medicine, they have lots of books on these subjects.

Other classic must-sees include the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Victoria and Albert and the British Museum.

OUTDOOR SPACES

IMG_3643.JPG

Kew Royal Botanical Gardens

Perfect escape from the hustle and bustle off the London streets, Kew is one of my favorite and one of the largest botanical gardens in the world. It has plants literally from across the globe and I was lucky enough to work here with my graduate university. Definitely worth a visit.

Hampstead Heath

My favorite park, you can go swimming in natural ponds. It’s difficult to believe you are still in London and the ladies pond is specifically magical and wild.

Sydenham Hill Woods

Magical escape to go wild forage garlic and mushrooms.

Bonnington Square

This beautiful square has trees growing through the pavements and a quirky volunteer run vegetarian cafe that changes the chef every night. The area began in the 1980s by squatters who eventually planted all the trees in the streets, began the cafe and started a community garden.

Chelsea Physic Garden

Oldest botanical garden in England, housing 5,000 different medicinal, herbal, and edible plants. I would recommend going on a free tour and stopping for some tea at their adorable cafe.

Stop Being Afraid of Fruit!

June 13, 2018

I will never forget one of my first meetings with various nutrition experts. I still remember the words “bananas are too high in sugar” or “just cut out fruit, it has too many calories.” And so, believing fruit sugar to be the cause of many health issues, I cut them out, only allowing myself low glycemic fruits like berries. Years later, I look back, and think, wow that was a huge mistake.

Health trends influence public opinion heavily. We are so easily swayed by what bloggers, celebrities and famous individuals eat or do to stay fit and healthy. While some habits work for certain individuals, this does not mean that the majority of us should follow the same routines. We should not follow what seems trendy, we should follow our intuition. We are taught to be so afraid of food, that we end up staring into our empty kitchens wondering what we can and cannot eat!

One quite ridiculous trend is that that fruits are not good for us. It has been getting a horrible rap lately for being too high in sugar, causing weight gain, influencing the growth of candida, etc. How could this be? They are the very foundation that our health depends on and have been around for as long as humans have been. If you read biblical books, fruits have always been on earth since day one. We survived because of fruits!

“Before refined sugar production, and trade became a major industry that turned products like table sugar and HFCS into dietary staples, we relied on a critical source of life. That source was fruit. since humankind began, we’ve depended on fruit, in all its varieties, for our survival. The Tree of Life was an ancient symbol of interconnection, fertility, and eternal life - precisely because of this legendary tree’s fruit. Fruit is part of our essence, a basic element of who we are. We cannot survive without fruit on this planet. It outweighs the nutrition of any other food" (291, William).

For example, a new trend says that lectins from fruit seeds cause inflammation, therefore, we should stay away from them. However, Anthony William has found that it isn’t the fruit or certain foods causing this inflammation or immune responses, but really it’s just certain foods feeding a pathogen hiding within your body, actually signaling a sign of an illness. If you are healthy, your body will absorb fruit and its amazing nutrients. When we deprive ourselves of food, especially fruit, we are not properly nourishing ourselves. Fruits are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Yes, they do have sugar, but this is actually easily digestible fructose that converts into glucose.

“Fructose breaks down in your liver and doesn’t provoke an insulin response…[while] glucose starts to break down in the stomach and requires the release of insulin into the bloodstream to be metabolized completely” (Joy Dubost, 2013).

This steady release actually helps your body break down the sugar and absorb it properly, which will actually not lead to weight gain. They also have amazing healing properties.

"Fruit has properties that soothe your adrenal glands, strengthen your entire endocrine system, repair your vascular system, restore your liver, and revitalize your brain” (296, William). In addition, “fertility — and overall health — depends specifically on the fructose and glucose that occur naturally in fruit, as well as the phytochemical bonded to those sugars. A woman’s reproductive system also relies on the dozens of anti tumor, anticancer antioxidants (and so many more components yet to be discovered by medical science) available only in fruit, as well as fruit’s essential polyphenols, bioflavonoids, disease-stopping pectin, vitamins, and minerals. These elements help to stop polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and an overextended reproductive system — examples of conditions that cause mysterious infertility” (292, William).

Anthony Williams has also found that cancer cannot feed off the sugar in fruit, which possesses critical components such as polyphenols, including resveratrol, and other antioxidants. Fruit not only fights cancer, it also kills all types of viruses and bacteria. It is vital to gut health, which is essential to a healthy immune system. For example, the pectin in apples, and the skin, pulp, and fiber in figs and dates, are exceptionally effective at killing and/or clearing out anything that doesn’t belong in your intestinal tract, including fungi such as Candida, worms, and other parasites (298, William). Recently, a friend of mine was diagnosed with candida and told by her doctor to cut out fruit. She said her symptoms were actually getting worse, as she was only eating eggs and vegetables. As a holistic nutritionist, I advised her to immediately add fruit back in and cut out eggs, as they were feeding the inflammation. I explained that yeast is your body trying to kill off a pathogen, not fight excess sugar from fruit. One month later, she called me to thank me and tell me her symptoms at almost completely disappeared.

Fruit are our friends. Fruit does not make you gain weight. Fruit does not make you sick.  Fruits nourish the lymphatic system. Fruits heal and replenish at a cellular level. Give your body the proper nutrition and vitality it needs by going and eating a big, delicious bowl of mouthwatering fruit. These are the most recommended powerhouse fruits by Anthony William. Try to eat as much organic and wild fruits as possible for the greatest health benefits.

The Power of Celery Juice

May 15, 2018

Everyone knows that I am a true believer in Anthony Williams and his Medical Medium protocol. Medical Medium is a true medical marvel, healing thousands of people from chronic diseases and conditions. His healing protocol stems from the power of real fruits and vegetables and their ability to cure illness. One of the first things I learned from this book was about the power of adding celery juice to the diet. It might be one of the most powerful additions that I have incorporated into my lifestyle. You might now be wondering, why would I add this bitter vegetable juice into my diet?

Starting your day with 8 to 12 oz is one of the most powerful ways to get digestive system into track. It’s basically the ultimate healing tonic that pushes toxins out of your system. In addition, raw celery juice is extremely high in fiber and fluids and contains beneficial enzymes and vitamins and minerals such as vitamin k, c, b6 potassium, and folate. It is also high in natural sodium levels and contains antimicrobial properties that fight infection. Celery juice helps fight free radicals, prevents kidney stones, lowers bad cholesterol, fights cancer, reduces migraines, clears skin, reduces and controls blood pressure, lowers inflammation, protects liver health and cleans the blood. Celery juice is ultra hydrating - one of the most hydrating on the planet and can prevent dehydration by keeping electrolytes very balanced. Lastly, it is great for highly acidic bodies, as it will alkalize them.

Celery juice can heal conditions such as crones, diverticulitis, colitis, IBS, indigestion, and bloating.

“Researchers have identified over a dozen different types of antioxidants that are responsible for the benefits of celery — these include such phenolic acids as caffeic acid and ferulic acid, plus flavaols like quecetin. This makes celery useful for treating a wide range of conditions that are made worse by inflammation: joint pain (such as from arthritis), gout, kidney and liver infections, skin disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, and urinary tract infections, just to name a few” (Dr. Axe, 2018).

Celery juice is ideal for individuals with low levels of HCL, as it replenishes HCL to fight parasites, breaking down food better and allowing for pure digestion for the absorption. Starting your morning off with this juice will rebuild these HCL levels, which directly correlates to bile and liver health. According to Anthony Williams:

“Celery is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory foods, because it starves unproductive bacteria, yeast, mold, fungus, and viruses that are present in the body and flushes their toxins and debris out of the intestinal tract and liver. Pathogens like these are so often the underlying cause of inflammation—in their absence, your body is much better able to handle whatever life throws your way. At the same time, celery helps good bacteria thrive. Consuming celery is the most powerful way to alkalize the gut. That’s in part because celery (which is technically an herb, not a vegetable) is high in bioactive sodium. It also contains cofactor micro trace mineral salts as yet undiscovered in research. These are varieties of sodium and other trace minerals (more than 60 of them) that are present in celery and work symbiotically and systematically with each other and with celery’s regular sodium to raise your body’s pH and rid toxic acids from every crevice of your body, including your gut. This process is ideal to cleanse and repair intestinal linings. At the same time, celery offers enzymes and coenzymes, and it raises hydrochloric acid in the stomach so that food digests with ease and doesn’t putrefy. This helps prevent a multitude of gastrointestinal disorders. Adding celery juice to your diet is the best way to resolve ammonia permeability, an unrecognized condition in which ammonia gas seeps through the intestinal lining and causes health issues such as dental rot and brain fog…in addition to the above, celery improves kidney function, helps restore the adrenals, and can even bring ease to one’s mind and thought patterns, with its mineral salts feeding electrical impulse activity and supporting neuron function, which is key if you suffer with ADHD, brain fog, or memory loss. When it comes to celery, think electrolytes. It hydrates on a deep cellular level, lessening your chances of suffering from migraines…plus it offers stress assistance and also repairs your DNA”

If you do not own a juicer, do not fret! You can easily blend a bunch of celery in the blender and strain it with a cheesecloth. It is best to drink right in the morning after a large glass of warm water with lemon, but you can can have it throughout the day. Another great time is post or pre workout. If you do not like the taste, juice celery with cucumber and a bit of red apple or lime juice. Remember, celery is extremely inexpensive, making this the ideal healing technique and routine for anyone on a budget. It’s honestly under 3 dollars for a stalk of celery, so go for it. You will feel the power of juicing celery within the first week of your daily sessions. Healing is in your own hands, as well as, sitting right in your kitchen!

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT:

All too often, we make life more complicated than it needs to be—or else we oversimplify what’s truly a complex issue. This push-and-pull happens in all areas of life, especially health. In one approach, people overthink health problems and throw all kinds of potential solutions at them. In the other approach, people take a health challenge that’s actually a delicate interplay of many factors and try to make it seem like it’s just a simple case of the body going haywire out of the blue. For true healing to occur, we have to embrace a balance of the simple and the complex—and celery teaches us this. Drinking celery juice is the simplest of measures, so simple that people often write it off as too easy to make a difference in how they feel. They figure that adding several other ingredients to their green juice will add that many more nutrients. While green-juice blends can be very healing, there is nothing that equals the simple power of pure celery juice. It is as healing, transformational, and life-changing as it gets—and that’s due to its complex nutritional makeup, which needs to be left undisturbed to work its magic. It’s an important reminder for other areas of life. Where else do we need to have an intricate understanding of a situation to conclude that the simplest approach is the best

To press the reset button on your body, juice celery by itself. For the full effect, drink a full 16 ounces of fresh celery juice daily—and make sure it’s on an empty stomach to raise hydrochloric acid levels most efficiently. For dramatic results, drink two 16-ounce glasses of fresh celery juice a day.

Crystal Kingdom Series With River Forest Mama : Fluorite

May 1, 2018

By: Shanna Lynn

FLUORITE

Fluorite is such an angel - literally, she’s an angel in tangible form. Her gentle, (but focused) energy reminds us that we are manifesting miracles. She asserts that our most powerful tools are the mind and will, and that when we are comfortably anchored in our physical selves, we are able to be in alignment with the one universal mind, live in the NOW and make our TRUTH not only known, but effortlessly live it.

The trendy way of saying this is, “being in flow.”

Fluorite is able to encompass many qualities, but her message and work is consistent: We create our reality. Such a small and simple statement but such an incredibly powerful and overwhelming thought, and our thoughts are not just that which dreams are made of, but the reality of our waking world. Think about it, how often do we do things because we thought we were supposed to? How many times do we initiate actions because we thought that was what was expected of us? How many times do we actually think about what we truly want and act upon those authentic truths? It’s something to reflect upon, as where we are in life and whom we surround ourselves are literal consequences of the actions of our thoughts.

Fluorite is a stone that helps us remove the misleading thoughts, or unfocused energy, that has surrounded us and allow our true force to come through. Her purpose is focus and her gift is to stabilize, which creates balance. When the mind is going in many directions, and our thoughts are roaming every-which-way, we cannot commit to a single idea. Thus we begin to manifest a very chaotic life-style that fills us with stress, sleepless nights, uncertain days, overwhelming feelings of worthlessness and a general lack of purpose.  Fluorite asks us to make a commitment. She wants us to focus on the most important task, mentally commit to it and follow it through to the end. She reminds us that if we are juggling too many projects, we will not be able to complete them.

Fluorite is a mystic and can negate energies that are not of the Highest Good. She helps the Higher Self integrate the physical body with grace and ease - to be grounded and physically centered is the most important form of self-care we can practice. It’s one of the mantras she teaches: we must be comfortably anchored to this world we chose to inhabit. It’s a physical world, we are physical beings and we must be connected to our mother planet in order to work in it and on it. It seems that it’s slightly taboo to admit that we are Earth Creatures, but we are! And Earth Children, Earth Angels are beautiful multi-faceted beings. Fluorite, a multi-dimensional stone, knows this and she carries the laws of the universe to assist us in walking this earth with assuredness. She reminds us that the spaces between are moments of peace (as reflected in the spaces between her bands of color).  Moments between activities are peace, a chance to reconnect and practice a personal discipline that encourages growth and joy (the word discipline comes from the Latin, discipulous, which is instruction, knowledge). Her spectrum of the more common sea-greens, ocean-blues and  purple-depths inspires us TO KNOW, and to know that all that flows from our physical temples, from our realm of intellect and from our house of spirit is in alignment with the divine.

Fluorite comes to us in other colors as well, the most common being those mentioned above, yellow, clear, green and the rarer red, black and pink. She is the stone of creative minds, as she helps direct those ideas and helps strengthen resolve. She is an Amazon warrior, an ideal companion to carry when going on travels to places that are in alarming states of upheaval and hurt. She will also protect against negative words and psychic attacks. Because she is so centered and focused, she aids in learning and is a wonderful presence in the work environment. Want a little help in studying? Have some Fluorite and Blue Calcite with you.

flourite-wide.png

Due to her gentle concern of humanity inhabiting physical temples with comfort and ease, Fluorite helps strengthen bones (yes, she will help with teeth). She will help release toxins from the body, balance cholesterol levels, fortify the liver, assist in healing a sore throat, heartburn and will offer all that she is in mental disorders. As she is a mystic, her energy is conducive to spiritual and psychic growth. Being that Earth Children are a dynamic amalgamation of spiritual and physical, Fluorite is a beautiful teacher. She will help one prepare a space for spiritual work. She will be a wonderful meditative partner (place her on your third-eye for working on Akashic Records or on your Crown Chakra with a bit of Rose Quartz on your Heart Chakra for connecting your mind and heart).

Her ability to increase our concentration, bring order to chaos, encouragement of encompassing the highest ideals for body, heart and mind, purify spaces, activate our spiritual growth and enhance our mental development make Fluorite a guardian of the earthly realm. She is easy to get along with and her energy is especially welcoming to those new to crystal play. If you are craving to define your inner longing and to create a reality based on your personal truth and authentic self, Fluorite is eager to lend a most beautiful and gracious hand.

Shanna will be in the LA area monthly for special events, workshops and musical performance.

Her newest musical work, described as an “experimental tribal-fantasy love affair of sacred and electronic” is scheduled to be released on July 27, 2018. These songs emulate the teachings and mystical knowledge Shanna has learned from many months spent in the surrounding mountain areas of Oregon and California as well as the influences of her Scottish pagan roots. Dubbed "faerie-viking-electronica," the latest songs are a reflection of the heartbeat of the Great Mother merging with the heart-song of the human longing for sacred sensuality and primal thrills of the authentic voice of ancient magic and mystery.

City Guide : Santa Cruz

April 24, 2018

By: Molly Helfend

Have you ever traveled or stumbled upon a locale and just inexplicably known that this was where you were meant to be? For as long as I can remember, Santa Cruz has been that place for me. I will never forget the moment my mom and I first drove in. The foggy mist was gently caressing the pronged redwood trees, while the sun yawned and beckoned to say good morning. I instantly knew Santa Cruz was an unspoiled paradise nestled into the central California coast. It is a rare magical spot on earth, where ancient redwoods exude wisdom and pristine pronged cliff beaches manifest mediation. Where sea lions, stork birds, monarch butterflies and humpback whales migrate. Where surfers, barefoot hippies and college students meld together, prospering within a mixing pot of creative, fresh and liberal energy. Where “high” vibes are truly the typical attitudes, as you wave hello to your chilled out neighbor walking, skating, biking or boogying down the streets.

It is easy living in Santa Cruz. Most people are not living the typical “9 to 5” lifestyle. Instead, residents do not conform to the norm, finding love and passion in working to improve the local community and preserve the surrounding nature. Locality and environmental stewardship are extremely important and shine as bright as the California sun. Santa Cruz is filled with liberal outdoor enthusiasts and has a strong organic farming culture. Being a hop, skip and a jump away from at least one farmers market or local farm stand, visitors are obligingly greeted with a warm hug and genuine smile. There is true connection and relationships formed with local farmers and community members, not once, but multiple times a week! Interestingly, because of the increased cost of living, collective style living with a mélange of families and characters on shared land properties is very common, similar to 1960s communes. And to reaffirm the convolution of hippy vibes, the budding marijuana industry found a true home in Santa Cruz. It has blossomed into normality here, with almost every resident growing or investing in this mushrooming and quite honestly profitable business.

And thanks to the youthful UCSC college students, there is a groovy arts and music scene to enjoy. It's pretty easy to be swept away by the tides of the “hang loose” idiom. If you simply stroll along Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz, you will discover a charming authentic surf town that, with the conscious impacts of the older local community, has remained classic and un-commercialized. Or check out Capitola, the absolutely picturesque and quaint beach neighborhood, with colorful homes comparable to the Amalfi coast. Or even Aptos and Soquel, home to some of my favorite hikes within an infinitude of deep rooted earthy biodiversity. But, I will not lie, there is a prerogative attitude surrounding the phrase “locals only.” It is a well known secret that Lords of Dogtown ripped off Santa Cruz skate culture. But, there are also just some secrets I cannot share, which means, you may just have to visit to Santa Cruz and uncover them yourself. There is so much pride amongst residents, and truly a reason why people come and never leave. It is beyond an atmosphere of monomania, but a place where positive energy and happiness prosper. So, hop in your car, roll the windows down and take a little spin along Route 1 to discover why residents are born, raised and stay here forever.

TO DO

Get outside! - If you really want to immerse yourself in Santa Cruz, there is nothing better than simply being outdoors. Go surfing. Go for a hike. Breathe in the misty sea air. Appreciate the majestic beauty. Even taking a drive through the majestic redwoods, around the sinuous backroads of Soquel, is a great way to spend the day. Here is a great reference for some of the best hikes. (My favorite hike is local secret, so you must come uncover it yourself!)

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

This famous boardwalk is the perfect family outing. Walk around, grab classic carnival snacks, play arcade games, or hop on a amusement park ride. If you are visiting during summer, be sure to check out their summer concert series every Friday night!

Farmers Market

With handcrafted goods fresh produce and local vibes, the downtown Santa Cruz market is great place to mingle and get the scoop on whats going on. Check it out every Wednesday, with others across the county in Felton on Tuesdays, Live Oak on Sundays, and Scotts Valley and Westside on Saturdays. But, don’t worry if you miss out on one of these, there are farm stands throughout the Soquel mountains to grab all your organic produce needs.

Local Beer Tap Room/Brewery

Sip on an hoppy IPA and check out one of Santa Cruz’s various breweries. The beer culture is vibrant here, so I would definitely recommend a beer crawl, if you can handle it! Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing is a local favorite.

Pick your own berries while admiring the scenic landscape. The perfect romantic, family or just weekday activity to participate in. There is nothing more satisfying then harvesting your own food with love. I recommend checking out Crystal Bay Farms.

Arboretum at UC Santa Cruz

Be sure to take advantage of the free admission offer the first Tuesday of every month!

SHOP

Food Bin/Herb Room

This darling small local market doubles as a apothecary, selling a very high quality and vast array of herbs.

Surf and Skate Shops - Its hard to pick just ONE shop to stop at. I would recommend browsing whichever one you stumble upon throughout the town, as all are fantastic and each owner supports one another! Although, you should pick up some eponymous Santa Cruz skate gear if you can…

Vintage and Thrift Stores - Santa Cruz thrives on vintage and thrift shopping. 41st street and Pacific Avenue will have all your shopping needs.

Santa Cruz Antique Faire and Skyview Flea Market - However, flea markets might just be the main source of clothing for the youth in Santa Cruz. Check out the Skyview Flea Market every Friday and Saturday from 7am to 6 pm and Sunday from 7am to 5:30pm and the Antique Faire on the 2nd Sunday of every month from 8am-5pm, which is where I have found some of my all time favorite clothing steals.

LOCAL BRANDS

Creative Cultures

I stumbled upon Creative Cultures’ incredible probiotic drinks and fell in love with their Pollen Up beverage. Check out their Beet Kvass and Green Dream as well.

Creamy and delicious with raw honey, seasonal berries and figs.

Herb of the Week: California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica)

April 3, 2018

While running through the California wildflower fields, a vibrant golden blanket appears along the hillside. With further glances, these satiny flora would remind one of a chalice used to drink the sweet nectar of grapes. They also bring ones mind to an enchanted wonderland, where the Mad Hatter and March Hare could be found amongst the meadows, drinking tea out of these deep orange cups and the Dormouse would be nuzzling and napping into the blossoms of lively pollen. The irony, however, is that these sun worshipping flowers are illustrious for their calming and tranquilizing qualities, supporting the soul’s reception to consciousness and light.

The state flower of California, perennial in warm climates and represented with the element of Fire, the California Poppy is a member of the Papaveraceae family. It ranges in color from bright yellow to deep orange, creating a spectrum of sunsets. It is also the cousin of the notorious Opium Poppy, but before you get nervous, note that the California Poppy is a perfectly safe, non-addictive plant that contains no opiates, and is even suitable and highly recommended for children with sleep issues or temperamental tendencies. It is similar to the Opium Poppy, but has an array of alkaloids that provide much milder sedative properties, by gently establishing equilibrium in the nervous system. The California Poppy is tremendous for stress and anxiety and is widely used for mental health problems in western herbalism. It can be primarily found growing wild in its native habitats across the western states, including the Sonoran Desert and up the coastline from Baja California into Canada. The California Poppy also has extensive cultural significance to many indigenous tribes. To name a few, the Chumash, Pomo, Cahuilla, and Costanoan people traditionally ate the leaves as greens, would crush the plant into vulnerary compresses and even used the root for other topical and internal pains. The Luiseno Indians would munch on the flowers to create chewing gum and the Kitanemuk people traditionally rolled the roots directly onto their gums for toothaches.

The California poppy is an essential plant to have stored in your herbal armamentarium. Its radiance of light helps relieve and lose interest in your stress, bringing a sense of tranquility to the heart as it counteracts nervous system imbalances. It is also fantastic for those with insomnia and repetitive worrisome thoughts. Antithetically, those mad Wonderland tea partiers would actually benefit from the harmonizing and sedating effect of the California Poppy that situates around the heart.

Phytochemistry: flavone glycosides, berberine, sanguinarine, protopine, and allocryptine

Herbal Actions: nervine, hypnotic, anti-spasmodic, anodyne, analgesic, sedative, anxiolytic

How to Prepare: tea, tincture, poultice, compress, cook into olive oil for hair tonic, boil or roast leaves as vegetative meal, pollen for cosmetics, smoke, diffuse

What to Use For: nerve stress and excitability, anxiety and panic attacks, insomnia, pain relief, headache, sores, ulcers, toothache, colic, sciatica, shingles, menstrual cramping, intestinal spasm, relaxes blood vessels, nervous palpitations, hypertension, suppress lactation, bedwetting, restless leg syndrome, ADD/ADHD, memory concentration

Growing Conditions: Extremely hardy and drought tolerant, they thrive in nutrient deficient, dry soil and require very high sun. They grow in zones 6-10, so if feasible, simply throw seed around your yard in the fall, and the plants will bloom after winter rains. It is that simple. The summer heat will kill them, but they will propagate and eventually germinate on their own.

Harvesting Methods: They bloom most heavily from March to May, however, between June and September are the months to collect the aerial parts of the plant for medicinal use.

Parts of Plant Used: whole plant, flowers, leaves, pollen, seeds

*Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding*

Soothing Sleep Tincture

  • 1 part dried valerian root

  • 1 part dried california poppy

  • 1 part dried chamomile

  • 1/2 part dried blue vervain

  • 1/2 part dried wild lettuce

  • few tbs of raw honey (for taste)

  • Raw organic Apple Cider Vinegar**

  • Glass canning jar with airtight lid (I like Mason Jars best)

Add about 7 oz (1 tbs to .05 oz) of dried herb to 33.8 oz (1 liter) of apple cider vinegar (make sure to warm the vinegar first). The liquid should rise about 2 or 3 inches above herbs almost to the rim of the jar. Stir the mixture together and subdue the herbs. Make sure the lid if firming set when finished. Label the jar with the ingredients and start date. Place in a dark, warm location like a cupboard for 4 to 6 weeks (the longer the better). Try your best to the shake bottle daily during this maceration period. The brilliant Rosemary Gladstar has said that shaking the bottle brings old magic into your medicine making. With shaking, she believes that you should connect with your herbs by singing, stirring them in the moon or sunlight, wave feathers at them, or really do whatever your heart and imagination calls to.

When ready, strain the herbs with stainless steel strainer lined with cheesecloth and reserve the liquid into small tincture bottles. Use between 1-3 droppers full of this tincture, as needed, about an hour before bed.

Here is a great reference for tincture making

Honey: Our Bridge to Nature

March 27, 2018

By: Dawn Musil

Many of us know that pollinators play a critical role in more than a third of our food supply. They are essential to the continuation of our species and the millions of plants that surround us, but we can’t neglect the fact that these tiny creatures also play a critical role in our connection with mother nature. Consider that in order to create a single pound of honey, these bees must visit 2 million flowers. That means that for each teaspoon of honey that you consume (and I don’t know about you, but I eat at least a tablespoon of honey per sitting!), that’s over 30,000 flowers that were visited! This connection with hundreds of flowers results in a golden ambrosia that is filled with enzymes, vitamins, and minerals that these flowers have in their nectar and pollen.

Why Raw Matters

However, only raw honey can carry these valuable enzymes and nutrients. When honey is “pasteurized”, or heated to 150 degrees for at least 30 minutes, it is no longer raw and no longer carries these properties. When the microorganisms are killed in the pasteurization process, so are the valuable nutrients and enzymes. The honey then simply becomes a sweet mixture of syrup composed of golden glucose and fructose molecules. Interestingly enough, honey is antimicrobial—so, while many have claimed pasteurizing it as a “food standard”, it does not host any bacteria—making it safe (and far healthier) to eat raw. This raw honey has been prized for centuries and carries incredible value for your body, both inside and out!

History of Honey

Ancient Egyptians knew of this incredible value and used it in food only for royals. They then buried it in tombs, where it lasted for thousands of years due to its antimicrobial properties!

Ayurvedic medicine believed that honey was one of the finest gifts that nature bestowed upon humans and have incorporated it into many Ayurvedic therapies. Additionally, current research shows that honey has incredible humectant properties—meaning it holds moisture—which is why it is used in many soaps, lotions and face masks!!

Allergies Bee Gone!

It gets even sweeter! Local honey can cure your allergies! While the bees are visiting the flowers, they gather nectar and pollen and their tiny enzymes turn what would otherwise be a common allergen into glucose in the form of deliciously sweet honey! So, eating a tablespoon of raw, local honey per day can cure those seasonal allergies by providing a sort of allergen-inoculum in the form of honey!

Herbalism and Honey

In Western herbalism, infusing honey with medicinal herbs makes these potent plants into a sweet form! Honey is a great way to extract those precious nutrients and phytochemicals from herbs and makes it easy to ingest even the most bitter of herbs! Herbal infusions focused around lavender and chamomile are my favorite addition to my evening tea to help relax in the sweetest way possible. But the beauty of honey is how creative you can bee! Lemon and ginger-infused , as well as cinnamon and turmeric infused are a few other favorites. Use the recipe as a base for creating your own!

Simple at home infusions: Relaxing, herbal honey

Materials:

  • 8 oz mason jar
  • 1/8 cup dried chamomile flowers
  • 1/8 cup dried lavender flowers
  • 8oz. honey (1 cup)

Get some quality, local honey. It doesn’t really matter what flavor you choose. The lighter the flavor (orange blossom or clover), the easier and faster the infusion!

Pour the dried herbs into the jar. You want the jar to be no more than a quarter full, so you leave room for the herbs expand. You may have some herbs left over.

  1. Fill the jar to the top with honey and screw on the lid. You may be left with some additional honey for you to enjoy in your tea.
  2. Let the mixture sit for 1-2 weeks in a cool dark place.
  3. Strain out the herbs and enjoy.

Alternative hot infusion:

This can be done for quicker, intense flavors: simply heat the honey until it’s very viscous and place cheesecloth over the mouth of the jar with a band. Then, place the herbs on top and pour honey slowly through the sieve. Allow the herbs to sit in the jar for up to 12 hours, then remove the cheese cloth and herbs.

Honey for the Sweeter Good!

Perhaps the most exciting and sweetest (pardon the pun!) part about honey is how beekeeping and honey are being used for social and environmental good!

What’s incredible is the benefit to our natural world and the environment. Without bees, we wouldn’t have 1/3 of our food supply; but, to break that down, that isn’t just fruits and vegetables. Bees are critical to the alfalfa and clover that feeds cows. This means your milk, yogurt and cheese options would vanish along with your favorite strawberries, apples and eggplants! Many organizations are taking the lead on reversing these losses from colony collapse disorder.

Beekeepers in Los Angeles worked to successful make urban beekeeping legal in 2016! Detroit Hives is using beekeeping to revive the urban areas by taking vacant lots and turning them into community apiaries for education. HiveLend is connecting the community with rooftop and community hives in Baltimore. Even Morgan Freeman is doing his part to support the bees by taking up apiculture and supporting the bees with hives of his own.

And you can help, too! Find local beekeepers to buy your honey from, plant pollinator friendly flowers, and begin to bee the change in your community to save these incredible bees and keep this treasure we’ve had around for centuries more to come!

neural therapy

Neural Therapy — An Incredible Therapy for Modern Day Conditions

March 22, 2018

By Dr. Christine Surrago, ND

In an era of modern living and technology, our nervous systems are overstimulated, overdriven and taxed on a minute to minute basis.  Due to the overdrive of the autonomic nervous system (fight or flight system), the body lacks the ability to properly rest and heal.  Proper rest is the foundation of all health and healing.  Regardless of whether you sleep well or not, if your living in modern society, you have some degree of overstimulation on your nervous system.

There is some excellent research that shows that many cases of chronic illness and pain are associated with negative changes in the autonomic nervous system.  This includes anxiety, depression, mood disorders, autoimmune diseases, digestive disturbances, chronic headaches, chronic pain conditions, chronic infections (such as lyme, EBV or MRSA), endocrine conditions (diabetes, hormonal conditions) and so forth.  An unbalanced autonomic nervous system has a widespread negative effect on the body including muscle tension and pain, decreased blood and lymph perfusion throughout the tissue, decreased glandular functioning, thyroid issues, adrenal issues, hormonal issues, cardiovascular and immune system issues.  Neural therapy helps to release tension and trauma that is held in the nervous system and helps to restore the function of all of the cells and organ systems.

Neural Therapy

Neural Therapy consists of injections of procaine either just under the skin, or deeper in some cases.  Procaine is a medicine that helps to stabilize cell membranes, decrease inflammation, restore blood and lymphatic flow to a region.  Carefully placed injections of procaine in the body over a series of treatments help to restore the autonomic nervous system.  The restoration and balancing of the “fight or flight” response leads to expedited healing.

Chronic Pain + Myofascial Tension
Neural Therapy is used to treat cases of chronic pain.  Some causes of chronic pain are from surgeries or traumas to the body.  Surgeries will result in a scar pulling on their other organs, bones and muscles.  This injection releases the scar tissue resulting in decreased pain.  Many women with C-Sections or fibroid removal have benefited drastically from this therapy. Any pain in their body that has developed over time from the scar tissue pulling on their body is completely resolved within a few treatments.

Interference Fields
Neural Therapy is used to treat interference fields.  An interference field forms from an injury, scar, surgery or tattoo.  These fields can cause a disturbance anywhere in the body no matter where it is located and halt the healing process.  All scars, injuries and tattoos need to be injected over time to clear these interference fields.  I have also seen concussions related to various diseases including hormonal disturbances, gastrointestinal issues and autoimmune diseases. A few injections around the crown of the head, restoring the autonomics around the head has significantly helped these people.  Tattoos are another trauma to the body which I highly recommend a series of neural therapy appointments to clear any trauma in the body.  I have seen many patients with tattoos receive neural therapy and many of their conditions resolve including anxiety, depression, digestion issues, hormonal issues.

Chakras + Mental Emotional Issues
There is another use of neural therapy, which I find very beneficial on a mental/emotional/spiritual level.  It is the injection of procaine near the different chakras.  Chakras can hold patterns or programming which can limit our ability to have healthy relationships, vibrant health and progress in our lives.  With these injections, people have reported to have released different programs during their visit and have the experience of having no ego or chakra programs for the rest of the day.  This experience is priceless and most people never have the opportunity to experience this.

Who Can Benefit?
Anyone can benefit from neural therapy. If you have had any injuries, scars, tattoos, surgeries it would certainly be beneficial.  If you have any degree of stress, anxiety, depression or a sense of unwellness you can certainly benefit from this therapy.    Conditions I have seen benefit from this therapy, or completely heal include:

  • Autoimmune conditions including RA, MS, Crohn's disease, Ulcerative Colitis
  • Chronic immune deficiency leading to infections including Epstein Barr Virus, Lyme, Strep, Bowel infections + MRSA infections
  • Hormonal issues including PMS, PCOS, amenorrhea, painful or excessive period flow, adrenal fatigue, thyroid issues
  • Endocrine issues including diabetes
  • Cardiovascular issues
  • Mental/Emotional Issues including Anxiety + Depression + Bipolar
